EU statement on U.K. transition period

North West

Starts March 2019, ends December 2020 all existing single market, customs union and EU financial contributions continue. U.K. adheres to and implements all new EU directives but has no say from March 2019 in any of them.

What if anything do you think the U.K. crack team of super Negotiators will achieve in counter negotiations?

Hard Brexiters will be happy at the length of the transition/implementation period. Remainers in cabinet and government and in wider Parliament originally wanted a 3 to 5 year transition period. Brexiters in cabinet said it should be around 2 years. The EU has come up with a transition time period of less than 2 years (21 months).

Weren't you saying just yesterday that we are leaving in March 2019?

Looks Mogg was right then. U.K. becomes a Vassal State for two years at least - probably more considering the blatant inability of Davis & Co to negotiate anything.

I doubt May will last 2018 now.The Tories will cannibalise themselves over this.

Here we go again...

The EU have said this is what we can have and the cost will be. Just as they did shortly after the Maybot triggered article 50.

Our reply was 'NEVER!', that's nothing but a starting point. It's a negotiation and will lead to the biggest fight of the summer. Boris standing up in the Commons and saying the EU can go swivel and threats that if the Maybot does not stand up to Brussels the brexit wing of the Conservative Party will remove her and replace her with someone who will... Nine wasted months later the EU set a deadline for us to agree to their terms and we did.

I am listening to news at 10 and what am I hearing from the same Tory brexiteer camp spouting the same shit! I expect that in a month or two I'll hear BoJo making another proclamation from the government front bench of the Commons declaring that the EU can go swivel.

I wonder how long it will take the EU to force our government to cave this time. And more to the point how much time will be wasted by our government in order to stifle any meaningful examination of and debate on the final deal?

do you think they will be happy we have EU minus for that period ? All of the perceived costs. None of the influence ?

Probably little, if anything. They might get to keep the Maybot as leader, whilst running up to the deadlines for all phases, having seemingly forgotten what they were supposed to be doing each time. The EU will remind them that they have been 100% open each time, whilst the conservatives thought that the target was to be opaque.

If we don't engage with the priority issues, communicate openly and fairly as well as invest our time and energy with this hugely important process, we probably deserve to do much worse than they will allow us to be.

Yes That's Correct, This Is Really Not Difficult To understand. Article 50 period ends on 29th March 2019, Michel Barnier even said yesterday the UK leaves the EU at Midnight on March 29th 2019. Then begins a transition period of less than 2 years (21 months).

Less than 2 years. I thought you remainers took Michel Barnier's words as gospel? Barnier said yesterday it would be 21 months.

And that's taking back control? We will be under EU rules and control for 21 months - paying and having no say - that's what I call a result - or capitulation. Before you come back - yes we are going to negotiate an opt out clause. Yeah, as a brexiteer you must be delighted all the promises made - delivered! La la land.

And no one picks up on the most important thing about this...

May and the Tories have said that they want 2 years. In fact they even said they were writing the 2 year period into the brexit bill...

And up pops the EU and says you will have 21 months during which time you will do...

Just as they told us what we would do and how long we had to do it regarding phase 1 of the withdrawal discussions.

Now everyone needs to remember that even before article 50 was triggered the EU said that all negotiations will need to be completed at least 6 months prior to 29 March 19 because the EU has its own internal (not including the UK) discussions and agreements to reach if the UK is to exit on 29/3/19 with any type of agreement on any issue with the EU.

Just to be clear 'no deal' may quickly degenerate into all non British EU citizens leaving the UK in a 'refugee stream' of young highly skilled people returning to the European mainland and a stream of economically inactive pensioners flowing in the opposite direction from their retirement homes in Southern Europe.

That will lead to a whole lot of problems! There are quite a few British "migrants " in Europe who voted leave and many retirees are dependant on the British Government picking up their healthcare. If that is stopped they will be looking at a bill of 6-8,000€ per annum. Plus a volatile FX rate and possibly frozen pension too! Further more they will be classified as aliens.

Again I think you are looking at the financial to avoid looking at the really harsh reality of the most likely outcome (if we look at what has happened historically whenever there has been this sort of partition that has resulted in the mass movement of people disposed due to political power-grabs).
