Trump sends a message to the UK

President Donald Trump has predicted a "tremendous increase" in UK-US trade, after talks with Theresa May.

He also said the US and UK were "joined at the hip" on military matters, while Mrs May said they stood "shoulder to shoulder" in facing shared threats.

In a series of warm exchanges in Davos, Switzerland, President Trump also told the UK PM: "We love your country."

.

Great day for U.S. / U.K. relations

I don’t think that Donald Trump has anything to do with the relationship that the U.K. has with the USA. The relationship transcends Prime Ministers and Presidents.

That said, the respective leaders can produce policies that can have a short term effect on the productiveness of the relationship and it is interesting that you have focused on trade and defence.

What has Donald Trump said and done in the last 12 months that makes you think that he will “give” anything away? The economy sizes alone suggest that any future U.K./US trade deal would be massively one sided even with a benevolent President, let alone a protectionist President. I am intrigued considering the America First rhetoric and the recent imposition of tariffs on various products as to how you see the U.K. benefitting?

As for defence, Donald Trump has proclaimed a lack of trust in NATO and is now an unquestionably unreliable defence partner in NATO. What makes you think that he would be reliable to the U.K.?

Are you aware that yesterday Trump said that he was looking forward to testifying under oath and today his Attorney corrected him? Just another little flip flop from a man who just cannot be trusted.

Not what you said though is it? It was a "great day" now it's "oh, hey, if this works out, that'll be great", presumably after you took a second to think about what you said and realised you were taking the word of Donny Trump at face value.

Oh, and to save you some time in future - your tone policing is a fucking waste of time.

You are aware we "the U.K." pay our way in NATO, whilst the majority of EU countries do not; agree?

Trump is pissed off that so many NATO members "do not pay their way" and do you blame him for being pissed off

22 countries which are NATO members fall below the 2% including Canada

22 countries at the same time who would shout for the USA to help.

If these countries want that help, they should pay their way.

US - UK relationship, Trump again today has said that trade between usa and uk would be great, our PM said we stand shoulder to shoulder in facing shared threats,

both parties are willing to talk, to work out deals and Work Together as allies

Yet every single one who has posted here wants this to fail

and you all call yourselves Brits, well it seems to me, every one of you want the UK to sink, simply because the brexit vote did not work out for you

you should be ashamed.

Nothing to do with Brexit, but nice try.

Everything to do with Trump being an overt and unashamed liar, so trusting anything he says is stupid in the extreme, and also to do with our historical trade deals with the US being distinctly more favourable to the US than us.

If we can stick it alone without the EU, we can also avoid being the 51st state of the USA.

According to who?

I think most people, distrust or dislike Trump across almost the entire political spectrum.

Of those who claim to admire him, a large proportion appear to be doing so to "wind up the libtards", as opposed to actually, wholly wanting to identify with a man who can barely construct a coherent sentence.

however i find his past record on destroying decent hard working companies he bankrupted rather than pay his dues..

his racist treatment of none white workers on sub contracts..

his appalling and puerile mocking of a disabled person..

his casual almost nonchalant offensive way he speaks about women..

and his own then teenage daughter..

all utterly reprehensible..

Or

Well, in that case, option B please.

The richest and most powerful country on earth, has singled your country out and wants to increase trade. Both countries would no doubt benefit, irrespective of the size difference

I don't think anybody wants the UK to fail. After all nobody is immune to the harm that COULD happen if brexit fails! Natural disasters we have no control over, but this is the people's choice. IF it is a great success then all will be rosey, if it fails then we as a nation are just going to have to deal with it! Would that be the same country who in 1937 planned to invade and annex Canada? Or the same country that in December 41 agreed to share all nuclear secrets with the UK and 48 hours after the UK gave the USA the knowledge required to build a stable nuclear pile then reneged on its promise and refused to hand over any of it's nuclear secrets?

I can continue and give you many, many more examples of the USA been given knowledge of British inventions and then refusing to honer their part of the deal that gave them said knowledge.

But your Brexit haters, who prefer to talk down your country on a daily basis and dismiss any form of post Brexit success - don't want one!

I can't possibly think why?

That's one interpretation.

Another is that Trump is a known and proven liar, so putting any faith in what he says is pointless.

Obama tells you - America is going to put you at the back of the trade queue if you vote for Brexit

Trump tells you - he wants to increase trade between your two nations

Which one is lying? .... Answers on a postcard and label it to - 'The Dept of - I aint been brainwashed by the British media, no I ain't Guv' "

Other world leaders, being actual adults, understand that words have meaning, and when a leader of a nation publicly commits to something it carries weight

Trump thinks he's the fucking godking of America and can do whatever the fuck he likes.

There's a marked difference, and you'd have to be willfully ignorant to pretend otherwise.

"get a grip man, if we go back years, do you really think the UK, Britain is squeaky clean"

I understand you are pro USA and do not want to hear what I am saying but as I said I could give many other examples. The latest one I know about that is in the public domain is the F35 VSTOL where in exchange for the BaE (formally property of Hawker Siddeley) VSTOL and Rolls-Royce LiftSyste system copywrights the US DoD would finance Roll Royce developing a new turbofan engine with a new generation of single Crystal turbofan blades. As soon as the blades had been developed (factory to manufacture them in USA and holey owned by a US company, not RR UK or RR International, the DoD pulled their funding but kept the technology and passed it to Pratt and Whitney along with the formally UK owned copyrights. That was done less than 10 years ago.

Leopards do not change their spots and our government keep handing UK developments to the Yanks and getting shafted in return and the Yanks even tell us how they intend to shaft us and we lube up every time they tell us to bend over!

"President Donald Trump has predicted a "tremendous increase" in UK-US trade, after talks with Theresa May.

I would doubt very much if the uk spends 2% on defence !!!!

The Tories have labeled everything defence.

Anti terror police etc that is defence !!!!

We once had a proud military under all the cutbacks it has the lowest numbers since Napoleon's time.

Even at 2 % it is just not enough

you should be ashamed."

I do wonder why Britons feel that the USA is in any way ideologically pro-Britain.

A cursory glance at US history might explain the stance of the USA. It might also explain things like American finding for the IRA, for example.

Yes, they entered WW2 on the side of the allies, but let us not forget that this was mostly because Japan bombed Pearl Harbour, not because of some fondness for Britain, indeed Britain were not the only nation whose emmigrant population made up the white population of America in Europe....

True. There's still a market out there for anti-British songs based around the war for independence. Although it's also true the Americans have never bombed our cities. Invaded and occupied us. Sailed an armada at us. Or allied to a fascist against us.

Again not strictly true. They did ally themselves with Napoleon and invaded Canada in 1812, and plan red (now declassified) shows exactly how advanced the planning was to invade Canada and British Pacific holdings eventually annexing New Zealand and Australia. These plans were only shelved when it became obvious to the US that Hitler intended open hostilities in Europe, and that the USA could profit from letting Hitler destroy Briton industrial base rather than the US doing it themselves, thus profiting twice over.

But they have funded partisans looking to free themselves from the yoke of British imperialism, the IRA, for example.

They would also have left Europe to it's own devices in WW2, were it not for an act of war by Japan.

Even that is not correct.

The USA only declared war on Germany on the 11/12/41 when the speaker of the house was informed that Hitler had just spent 5 hours addressing the Reichstag declaring war on the USA.

Funny how a man who has never served his country can point a finger at a man who has and imply that the man who has is in some way disloyal. But then this is really a common occurrence. Out of interest is there any member of the armed forces here (serving or former) who would be happy if they ere told they were being buddied up with a Yank or that they were going into action with a yank unit on their flank or to their rear?

I also think that their politicians are more trustworthy and that our future prosperity does not lie in closer ties to the USA but with closer ties to Europe and reaching common understandings with Russia and China."

wtf a Russian or a Chinese soldier waching your back than an American WHY is that then ? The hate for America on here is unreal

"That quote will haunt you for a long time, sure hope you are proud of it, cause it wont be forgotten

suspect you are living in yesterdays dreams Will,

you done the job you signed up for and was paid to do, expect you get a small pension for it too

"I'm sorry but Putin is clearly one of world's most trustworthy leaders! And China's government only has its people's interest at heart..... whether they like it or not! "

You mistake trustworthiness with morality, principle and ruthlessness. They are totally separate. I trust that if the Russians say they will do something they will at least try and do it, same for the Chinese, I cannot say the same for the Yanks because I have seen them say one thing while doing the opposite on too many occasions.

You all are too quick to see what you want to see rather than taking the time to critically examine what is in front of you and see the reality of what is there.

Because they have a well deserved reputation for popping off at anything they see and later blaming it on the 'fog of war' when actually it's because for the most part they are poorly trained and badly led cowards who shoot before identifying what they are shooting and hide or run away whenever possible if things get sticky.

And I do not hate Americans, in fact I do not really hate anyone. I treat people and groups as I find them and approach them all in the same way. I listen to what they say I look at what they do and I compare the 2. If there are inconsistencies I attempt to remember them.

Now why not go back through all my posts on this thread and see if you can maybe get inside my head for just a second or two. You may find you gain a new outlook on some things.

"I do wonder why Britons feel that the USA is in any way ideologically pro-Britain.

I here that from you, but not from the Americans I speak to,

what I hear from them is "You Brits" are good, your like us, you can stand on your own

I can honestly say on my U.S. travels I have not heard a bad word against us, and then When I mention I am a Scot, the praise increases

I treat Americans as they treat me, with respect and open friendship

what I am hearing from all BATH's on here is totally unjust and un-needed, call yourselves Brits you have no interest in Britain succeeding, you are simply BATH's"

I don't hate the Yanks, I just know about how America came to be, and have always supported a free Ireland.

What I am saying is that the notion that we somehow have a "special" relationship with them, when their country was born out of throwing off British Imperialism, and their attitude thereafter (America does what suits America) is absurd.

It smacks of trying to find another raft to cling to because we have no Empire to speak of and are now leaving the EU...

"Why bite the hand of friendship being offered, seems foolish if not childish"

If every time you offer your hand to a dog it waits until you relax and then bites you, is it clever to keep offering your hand?

Or if every time you turn your back to someone that claims to be your friend they steal from you and never keep their word. Are they your friend and are you being clever trusting them with everything you own because they say you can trust them to be your friend?

I am sorry you feel that way and disappointed in your language, it is not needed on this forum or indeed any forum

I simply wish the UK to succeed, and if a good relationship helps, so be it with Trump, then so be it."

Great response ...

America has never, as far as I'm aware offered any kind of deal that wasn't heavily weighted to their advantage.

How come you can see that being in the EU isn't always to our advantage, but as soon as the yanks are mentioned you lose all critical faculties?
