Apparently Scottish government buildings will only fly the Union Flag (Union Jack) one day a year from now on. Are they ashamed to be British?

Nothing to do with being ashamed of being British, but more proud of being Scottish...

Scottish government is as it says. Scottish, not British, unlike Westminster, that is British not English.....

The Catholics are, yet they refuse to elope back to their beloved Ireland. The Protestants tend to be proud to be British.

So Scottish are not British of course but are they English?

History shows us that Scotland never wanted British government to control their laws and land.

Funny how people take up an identity; we're Scottish, we're English etc.. and then tries to protect it!! What it is, we're humans born on a rock spinning in space. Some of these humans need their heads banged off the rock.

If someone wants to fly certain flags at certain times, good for you. I hope you have a nice cup of hot chocolate before bed time. And when you decide to come out of the playground, come back to the real world.

no a majority was only managed by the lies told to the Scottish electorate chief among them Boris telling us a no vote was the only way to guarantee staying in Europe or scaring vulnerable pensioners with headlines about not being entitled to a Scottish pension or that it wouldn’t be paid. There was no depth the project fear brigade wouldn’t stoop to there were even headlines about how we were more in danger of alien invasion if we went alone

I'm in a similar position to you - English and living in NI.

People have no idea about how vicious and provoking the simple flying of flags can be.

At the moment I am sitting in my car at a petrol station in a village main street. Every single lamp post has a union flag at the top of it denoting I am in a protestant neighbourhood. The Catholics fly their flags in their own villages or housing estates.

In serious areas and council estates protestants will have Ulster flags flying, which is basically a white and red cross England flag with the red hand of Ulster on it. Also there are the flags of the UVF UDA and UFF - all loyalist paramilitary organisations. The flags are put up by gangs of men and youths that nobody dare argue with.

This is normal everyday life and to me flags are very menacing and I'm on neither side here.

A couple of years ago the powers that be decided they were no longer going to fly the union flag every day of the year on city hall in Belfast. There were protests and riots for weeks.

Most people really have no idea of the power of simple flags

Part of EU regulations requires us to send a % of our GDP as aid to other countries.

Also, some 70% of our UK laws are due to EU directives. So this is the crazy bit; if Holyrood want to get away from Westminster and join the EU, they want to get away from 30% of Westminster. Unless the EU changes it's joining criteria, which we doubt, Scotland wouldn't pass the joining test.

If you keep emotions out of it, leaving the UK is financially bad for Scotland. Running on emotions, we hope Scotland does leave because being close to the border means we could take advantage of positives, say if fuel was cheaper as an example.

They voted to remain in the United Kingdom as Scottish

"I'm proud to be British but I don't really care about flags flying from government buildings. Scottish building flying the saltire seems appropriate to me

Isn't Scotland part of the United Kingdom anymore?

Scotland is in a suffocating marriage with United Kingdom

Yes, the UK would be financially better off without Scotland. I think the UK should have a referendum to kick Scotland out or not and what interest rate to charge when they go pop. well over 4 years it's cost 51.7 million to fund the Scottish nhs!The UK has it's own problems with not enough people putting into the pot,far too many taking out. I like the Scottish met many nice ones abroad and at home but at a point the u.k needs to think of its own finances and stop sending money abroad and cut out the corruption.

Question Time, around the Brexit referendum time. Estimates ranged from 13% to 65% but the discussion was 70% because different organizations were diddling the criteria to conclude a figure.

I'm sticking to the larger % because it supports my opinion

Im sure it was James VI who created the union flag and since he was Scottish thats why the Saltire will be incorporated in it.

I never said you said ireland isn’t the homeland I was commenting on the post. You also never said Scottish catholics. You made a General statement. And besides it doesn’t matter who what. I’m irish with Scottish heritage. And Norwegian heritage as well. I’m catholic ive lived through the bad times in ireland in the south and in the north and now I work in the uk but still live in ireland.

However you have made some pretty drogoratory comments about the Irish IE thiers Irish education for you! And religion. One of the other posters commented on the various backgrounds in Northern Ireland where flags denote what area your in. He’s correct it can be pretty scary being in the situation if you do not know the area but to be honest they are all very nice people and it’s only a small miniority that causes the trouble. Also I’m married to a Protestant woman who’s Scottish and two of my kids were born in Yorkshire. So where do I stand. ?

"Why would a SNP goverment fly the union flag at all?"

Because Scotland is part of the United Kingdom??

When shown the Saltire the majority of the world is currently likely to think it is a shipping flag. So perhaps it should be more widely used?

I assume the SNP want to try and generate a feeling of isolation from England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It will help when Indyref 2 comes along and Queen Nichola 1st takes over.

Perhaps the poster should recognise that both Catholic and Protestant churches are catholic organisations.

Protestantism was literally founded on the believe that Catholicism had corrupted the ethics of Christianity, but ok.

I thought it was so that King Henry VIII could divorce his wife/wives."

He just jumped on a bandwagon that was already rolling because he fancied a ride, both metaphorically and literally.

"The Catholics are, yet they refuse to elope back to their beloved Ireland. The Protestants tend to be proud to be British.

Ireland is the homeland of Catholicism..

who knew..

Yeah, because the Scottish Catholics with Irish surnames, waving tricolours mostly originate from Mexico and Italy, don't they?

Ireland is not the home land of Catholicism it is one of many countries where Catholicism is the main religion but that works alongside many other religions. The statements you are making are one of the reasons why for so many years the Irish , southern Irish ! We’re treated like shit for years and still are by small and narrow minded people like you and you are a minority. Whether your flags green white and orange or red white and blue underneath we are all the same. And if you really look deep into your family history I’m sure you’ll find a little bit of Irish in their somewhere. We came ,we loved and we left a little bit behind.

Infuriated me reading statements that are as racist as those are be read"

"Flag waving has never been about peace and harmony. When you raise your flag you raise hatred and ignorance also.

always thought it was to do with the pride you have in your country

what do you do Bob? burn the flag or just hide it away? I don't own a flag and can't see anything to be proud of.

Must admit I have a Confederate flag sticker on my Hilux Bumper bar, and a large cotton Confederate flag in the garage on wall

Really..

What a surprise..

Just the good ol' boys,

Never meanin' no harm,

Beats all you've ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born.

Straight'nin' the curve,

Flat'nin' the hills.

Someday the mountain might get 'em, but the law never will.

Makin' their way,

The only way they know how,

That's just a little bit more than the law will allow.

So you did say it then! If it's ignorant to raise a (national) flag, and every nation has a flag, and every nation raises their flag, then you are saying every nation is ignorant. If you don't believe that to be the case, then the flaw is in your initial statement, not my interpretation.

No, they are not inherently xenophobic. If you read the like of Rupert Smith in The Utility of Force, or Emile Simpson in War from the Ground Up, you'll find that modern military conflicts are generally international coalitions fighting non-state actors.

I'm ashamed to be British

The British are greedy , the British voted brexit .the British think themselves unique

The British are not unique in these qualities

Now of course individual British people are who they are but the world view is simplistic and not complimentary so I do not wish to associate with the world view of UK humans

I'm a human beyond that a geographic location must not define how other humans think of me

That said , any world member whom I would respect would not ever judge me by my place me birth anyway xxx
