North West

Prosecution very much laying the blame at the door of right wing propaganda and extremist posts on social media.

Can’t help but wonder about the hatred and vitriol directed at “foreigners” generally is getting really out of hand. What has happened to suddenly make some people feel “enabled” to direct aggressive and divisive rhetoric about their perceived hatred of (Muslims, EU, Eastern Europeans etc - delete as appropriate).

Suddenly!.

Think you'll find this has been coming on awhile, it's probably more that you've had your eyes opened by recent events?

I can imaging in a few years time you'll be bleating about this "sudden" climate catastrophe once you've been awakened from your middle class hypnosis

Half the truth as per

A man who drove a van into a crowd near a mosque intended to kill as many Muslims as possible and had been “brainwashed” by extremist right wing propaganda after watching a primetime BBC drama about a Muslim grooming gang, a jury has heard.

Exactly.

After all Brexit was a populist movement driven by a fear that too many of the wrong people are coming into the UK, so it's inconceivable that it becoming a reality would have emboldened people.

Just because they haven't got to the stage of killing people doesn't mean they haven't been. It's a gradual process. I've seen those BBC documentaries, and their attempts at "interrogating" far right views would be laughable, if it wasn't so serious.

"Do you know that there's some people who don't agree with what you're saying?"

"Yes, and those people are subhuman"

Really, I would point all this anti-immigration rhetoric back to when Michael Howard, as Tory leader, adopted anti-immigration, and particularly anti-refugee positions (ironic as his parents came here after fleeing Nazi Romania). Kicking away the ladder. This was quite possibly a response to moderate electoral successes by the BNP. The strategy didn't go too well until the economic crisis.

Oh contraire, I agree with lots of things you say, I just don't think I should join you in telling vast swathes of society in what a bunch of "racist" "xenophobic" "treasonous" knob ends they are are for voting for "brexit" or voting for "demigods" like farrage because in the end, failures at democratic levels and failures by political parties for 40 years have driven them to it.

Nobody suddenly thought oohhhh you know what, things are going so well in my life at the moment I think I'll vote brexit or Nige.

Is there some racism in brexit, sure, is there some xenophobia, probably but the real big reason is an awful lot of people have seen there standard of living plummet, their personal debt skyrocket, their student loans treble, their working hours increase, their tax has gone up up up with stealth and indirect taxation while Facebook and Apple use complicated EU tax policy to negate theirs, their in austerity while Westminster and the EU build lovely new buildings and have extravagant personal allowances, their in a 7 hour queue in A&E while wealthier people fork out a few hundred quid to walk straight by them and to be frank nobody democratically voted for unlimited immigration or EU policy's or for that matter any trade deals or WTO tariffs, these are all policies decided by bankers lawyers and lobbyists over weak neo liberal politicans.

For all the fuss about trumps low ratings nobody seems to mention truedeus or macrons or Merkel's, the media quietly pushes those sections of society giving these leaders poor ratings to the back and ten years ago we'd all just have sang along like before without nothing really happening... However as Bob said, the times they are a changin, they have unelected spokesman on the interweb now and frankly that worries me more than brexit

They did. Back in 1975.

And since then they've consistently elected representatives to act on their behalf, because that's how a representative democracy works.

Complaining that "there was no democratic vote" for trade deals or whatever is just moronic, because let's be honest what is it you'd imagine you or anyone else like you would bring to the table when a hypothetical vote about a trade agreement came up.

That's right, fucking nothing.

Referendums on membership of the EU really should have been given with each new EU treaty that came along to see if we wanted to continue, particularly the Maastrict treaty and the Lisbon treaty. None were given and the Labour party did promise a referendum on the Lisbon treaty which they broke and Gordon Brown signed it anyway (without the consent of the people).

And consecutive governments ratified treaties that brought the UK to where it was before this tantrum.

And seeing as the UK itself had a hand in crafting these treaties, I have no time for this argument that people should be consulted for each one.

Every Irish referendum on every treaty has amply demonstrated it's a pointless waste of time as nobody bothers to take the time to learn about what's in the treaty. So what, exactly, would be gained by doing this?
