US Government - "CLOSED"

The US government has begun a federal shutdown after the Senate failed to agree on a new budget
.
The last US shutdown happened in 2013 and lasted for 16 days
.
Many government offices will close as federal law requires agencies to shut down if Congress has not allocated money to fund them.
National parks and monuments are also likely to face closure
.
Will it be another 16 days? or much longer? |

Well it does appear that US home priorities have been forgotten, the Democrats used their vote certainly to put a spanner in the works, I am still inclined to think that it's to take the heat off a much larger issue that's looming which could seriously harm the democratic party credibility. |

It is a sign of the dysfunctional and divisive nature of American politics. The Republicans are also hypocrites considering that the last shutdown in 2013 was as s result of them demanding that Obamacare was repealed as a condition of supporting the budget.
That said, Republicans control Washington at the moment and they should have had the bill passed without fuss. I can’t help but think that last week’s alleged “shithole” comments have gone some way to harden attitudes towards supporting the Democrats demands. |

Heard from friends living in and working in the US about this, range of economic lefties and more economic conservatives, all are saying this might be a good thing if it lasts for a year. A lower potential for bullshit being proposed and spouted by the baby in chief and both parties. |

also remember there were also 5 republican senators that voted with the democrats on basically a 3 week fix!
this lies at the hands of trump when he basically blew up the bi-partisan agreement reached on immigration and the dreamers..... which led to the shithole countries comments!!!
the democrats want a fix for DACA and for CHIPs (child health insurance policy) a lot of republicans want no part of any immigration fix, and will shy away from chips bearing in mind it was their tax bill which caused the chips problem!

the kids that fall under DACA (dreamers) as kids that were brought to the US with their parents, but have basically known no other home than the US....
the problem the republicans is that because DACA kids are registered, have no criminal records, work and pay taxes and some even gone into the military (about 1,000 so far) they are productive people in society,
which is why the republicans are on the wrong end of a 90%-10% issue where people want DACA kids to have a path to citizenship....
what was proposed in the bi-partisan bill was that there be a path for daca kids to citizenship.. but there parents would be able to be naturalised so long as they have no criminal records....
that was what was shot down by trump.... |

A person under daca, I wont say "kids" as someone in 20's or 30's is not a kid,
but having said that a person under DACA can only work if they have included a "EAD" with their DACA application, and as you know, it is only valid for 2 years
You will also be aware a DACA does not grant "LEGAL" Status |

no... i think you'll find the democrats managed to secure funding for the CHIPS program for the next 6 years... which means the poorest people children will at least have health insurance cover....
plus they got a commitment out of the republican leaders they will have a proper discussion with regards to DACA and in public for everyone to hear...... otherwise if they don't keep to that, it means we will be here again in 3 weeks time, and next time the republicans won't be able to pin anything on the democrats...

Now, any reasonable voter should be asking why Donny needs the US to pay for his monument to racism, as he was adamant that "Mexico was going to pay". But then again, any reasonable voter knows Donny is a lying sack of shit.
No, the real question is that there exists a mechanism to avert this shutdown, called reconciliation. But it was used late last year to pass a tax bill that's a big sloppy blowjob to the rich.

So Senate leader Mitch made a false promise last month to get an extra 28 days of government and now rather than the greatest deal-maker in the world admitting that the GOP's word like his is worth nothing its suddenly his idea to 'do a shutdown'.
I really hope the Dems really hold their nerve and make the GOP and Donny beg for a settlement. I think somewhere between 60 and 90 days will be enough to force Mitch to write an open letter of resignation where he accepts that the shutdown has been caused by his making false promises.

actually... let me amend this slightly... this one will be one house republican senate... AND republican senator Rand paul, because he is the one who delayed the vote till 1am, it then passed 71-28...
so the house will get it today.....
see this is where pelosi is being smart...
she will either get DACA provisions placed into this bill.... in which case she wins.... or house republicans will likely take down the bill by themselves... in which case they become the fall guys... and she wins!!!! |

the 8 hr speech was on a different debate, which was that there would be a clean daca bill brought before the house of which there had not been one so far...... it was nothing to actually do with the budget bill...
rand paul delayed the actual budget bill in the senate till 1am with a fillibuster.... which is laidend with all sorts of democratic goodies and spending which the republicans hate....vote then happened 71-28
got to the house... pelosi got yet another concession from paul ryan in that DACA is next big item dealt with and will be dealt with by the march deadline.....
passed the house... now off to the president to sign it....
house republicans will hate it for all the big spending committments especially after the silly people basically gave huge tax cuts to their donors.... |

It's all about principled conservative action - borrowing and reducing taxation but criticising democrats if they do anything similar, even to a far smaller level. Fiscal prudence, enormous debt - it stacks up in addled right wing brains somehow. |
