Scotland could be £12billion a year worse off

Jump to: Newest in thread

The Council of Elrond

Scottish government analysis concludes Scotland's economy could be £12.7bn a year worse off under a so-called hard Brexit

Now how many would be willing to accept this to keep your wee UK union together?

Now can you see why Scotland's people must be allowed to make their own minds up with having a new independence referendum as Scotland's majority voted to remain in the EU and single market

Scotland in the UK and the EU is best financially for Scotland, for the UK and for the EU. We can get richer together, or get poorer apart. Just cancel Brexit.

CLCC are you willing to see Scotland be £12 billion a year worse off with a hard brexit ?

What is it you want Scotland to do just sit and wait to be hit with being £12 billion worse off ?

Thank you so much for caring about Scotland

Btw the Yoon nutter media up here is Scotland claim the want the SNP to stop talking about independence and get on with the day job

Well the Herald has this as a headline

''Nicola Sturgeon refuses to discuss referendum after criticism''

Also by yoon logic they want Nicola to talk about a new independence referendum they really should make up their minds

Well Nicola was clear as hell yesterday once the final deal on brexit is known then she will decide on if to hand in the section 30 order to downing st

Whyis it unionists never listen as Nicola has said this time and time again but for now she is seeking to find the best possible deal for the whole of the UK and that is to stay in the single market how clear do you want Nicola to make it before it registers in your heed ?

Has there been an analysis of the cost of Scotland leaving the UK? A hard indy and a soft indy?

There is no way Scotland could leave the UK before the UK leaves the EU, so Scotland would be doubly fucked if out of the UK and out of the EU.

That would be interesting as the last time they did that they based all their economic figures based on oil being 120 dollars a barrel...

You will never get kinky to admit it but the dodged a hell of a bullet economically last time

I think Brexit also shows how complicated a split would be, and it would be much more complicated than leaving the UK, especially with a lot more national security complications on both sides.

Figures from Glasgow University say that Scotland would lose £7bn a year from the ending of the Barnett Forumla, and it had previously estimated an income of £4bn a year from North Sea oil and gas. Now seeing how North Sea oil and gas was a net drain on the treasury last year, we will conservatively reduce that down to an income of £0. So £7bn plus £4bn makes £11bn a year loss to Scotland if they were to become independent, add that to the £12bn announced as a cost of leaving the EU, that would make Scotland at least £23bn a year worse off.

I would also posit that the effect of leaving both would compound, however I am unable to quantify by how much so we will have to leave that, and simply call the £23bn a very conservative estimate.

The population of Scotland is 5.3m, so independence would cost the people of Scotland, every man, woman and child, £4,339.62, each and every year. Do you think that everyone in Scotland can afford that Kinky? Or would want to pay that?

Scotland has 5 million + people and if Scotland were to become independent then yes Scotland has alot of Scottish waters

And at present our Scottish government are fighting to make sure the UK and if not the UK then Scotland remains in the single market

Scotland's share of trade with the EU has shrunk over the past few years but that is not what the OP wants to hear.

You can only state they are potential customers of Scotland.

We already have a solid customer base with the RUK.

Scotland would need to reapply to the EU and satisfy the other nations before entry.

Small matters like deficit and currency would need to be over come and remember we would not have T hatchers rebate when we start contributing! !!

CLCC are you willing to see Scotland be £12 billion a year worse off with a hard brexit ?

What is it you want Scotland to do just sit and wait to be hit with being £12 billion worse off ?

Thank you so much for caring about Scotland

Neither CCLC, myself or many other who are in favour of the UK Union want to see Scotland leave the EU's single market. We don't want to see any part of the UK leave. If you also don't want Scotland to leave the EU's single market then, rather than using it as an excuse for your independence argument, why don't you work more with others around the UK, as Nicola actually is, to try and prevent it. Maybe you actually are willing to see the whole UK £120+ billion a year worse of if it makes Scott's independence more likely?

Erm clue i dont want Scotland to be in the UK its not an equal partnership or family of nations it never was

Sorry but yes i want Scotland to stay in the EU single market and i respect England vote t leave the EU and your being told from your PM that the UK wont be in the single market.

Now i do hope England do decide to stay in the single market but sorry i aint hanging about waiting because as it stands it dont look like its gonna happen.

So in all Scotland people have to do what is best for our country and can only hope England follow but by god if there is a way out for Scotland to escape the brexit mess then by god we will take it

So, basically you don't care about the whole of the UK being £120+ billions worse of after BREXIT or the likely £24+ billion worse of Scotland could be after a split with the rest of the UK.

You're really no different from the BREXITers are you? To hell with the damage to any people!"

I could twist that and say seems alot of people outside of Scotland do not care that Scotland could be £12billion a year worse off by staying in the UK and outside of the EU and single market

Now like i said i hope to god England changes it minds and stays in the single market but i aint hanging about living in hope that England chooses to stay in the EU or single market that may never happen and Scotland has to do what is in its best interests and that is staying in the single market

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I believe that both Scotland and England would be worse off separated whether either or both are inside the EU or not. I also believe that both would be even more worse of if they are not in the same customs union and single market. So, while I don't want Scotland to be £12 billion worse of and the UK as a whole even mote so, by leaving the EU I even less want Scotland, England and the UK as a whole to be a lot more worse off by breaking up the UK's single market and customs union. Scotland's independence from the UK would do nothing to mitigate the effects of BREXIT and can only add to and compound the detrimental effects to both Scotland, England and the rest of the UK. Solutions are meant to mark things better, not worse.

Right this is to make things very clear

Scotland voted by a majority to remain in the EU and single market

England voted by a majority and so did Wales to leave the EU but didnt vote to leave the single market which is good as England and Wales still have a change to save themselves on that

You keep on telling me and other pro indy supporters we should respect the 2014 result to remain part of the UK i have done this and i also respect the wishes of England to leave the EU i hope England and Wales fight to remain part of the single market but like i said Scotland aint hanging about and living in hope to see if England changes its mind and stays in the single market or cancels brexit

Scotland has to prepare for a hard brexit and what we can do to stop this from happening here in Scotland now before Scotland is hit will being £12billion a year worse off by staying in the UK and out of the EU and single market

none of you can give a real true figure your making up numbers as there is no impact papers to say if Scotland will be even more worse off out of the UK and EU stop making shit up and produce figures real figures coming from experts

yes i know Britain is an Island might wanna tell others that as some see it as a country lol

What i mean is Scotland does not have full control over non devolved matters

So why should English MP's for example tell Scottish people want we should get in a set budget and what powers we should get thats not neighbors thats dictating terms thats no family of nations

Anyone wanna challenge that ? Then i simply have to put the Scotland bill that was Westminster and unelected Lords telling us Scots what we can have in powers

You do know that this £12 billion is all assumption don't you, there is not one iota of practical evidence that makes that figure.

It's all based on assumption no one knows what is going to happen when Brexit comes around hard or soft.

Just reported on 5 live that these figures are guess work, but hey it's the bbc so you wont accept that will you.

Scotland is staying put matey and all your whinging and flag flying and going on about how hard done by Scotland is you aint going anywhere.

Your mostly just a lone voice that will not accept the true facts that are put in front of you.

So the economists that are experts are lying then ? Funny how unionists love trusting experts on anything anti independence but when it clearly shows Scotland will be worse off in a hard brexit UK no no the experts all of a sudden have not to be trusted lol

BBC 5 live ? Lol yeah ok trust the BBC they never lie to people lmao

Sadly for you that is not upto you to decide if Scotland were to become independent as you dont live in Scotland lol

lone voice ? yeah ok so i am the only one that supports Scottish independence now lol

Bristol East

The two referenda - Scotland in the UK, and the UK in the EU - make interesting comparisons.

In both - and I'm being very simplistic to make a point - the arguments came down to:

- stay, you'll be poorer if you leave

- leave, and you can be a nation again

Scotland heeded the warnings and voted with the head; the UK (or more accurately England & Wales) ignored the "experts" and voted with the heart.

For better or worse, Scotland renewed its marriage vows with England.

We're all in this together, as someone who is best forgotten once said. And I suspect we are ALL going to be poorer for a while as a result.

"

I've already answered you. I think Scotland would be a lot more than £12 billion worse of if it breaks away from the UK. Independence will not mitigate the impact of BREXIT it will compound it, and here's the impact study to show it.

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/236579/scotland_analysis_macroeconomic_and_fiscal_performance.pdf

It concludes that Scottish trade with the rest of the UK could fall by 80% and average annual incomes in Scotland by 25% as a direct result of independence. Just to be absolutely clear:- The report says that Scotland's exports to the UK could drop by £40 billion a year leading to a decrease in average incomes in Scotland of £6,000 per year as a direct result of independence.

Don't try and tell me you actually give a shit about Scotland being £12 billion worse of per year when your solution is forecast to actually make Scotland £40 billion a year worse off.

Like i said, solutions are meant to make things better, not worse.

"

The UK as a whole voted to leave the EU and the single market. All the leading figures of both the Remain campaign and the Leave campaign said a vote to Leave the EU meant leaving the single market. The Prime minister at the time David Cameron made this point numerous times on several occasions during the EU referendum campaign.

Scotland has never joined the EU as an independent nation. Scotland only has membership of the EU as part of the UK. That's why the EU referendum was a UK wide vote. It's also why the UK Supreme court ruled in the Gina Miller case that Scotland has no say in Brexit, because the UK Parliament took us into the EU in the 1970's and only the UK Parliament in Westminster can take us out now. It's about time you started to respect the democratic decision that the UK as a whole made to Leave the EU and the single market and also respect UK law as administered by the UK Supreme court that ruled Scotland has no say in the Brexit process because it is not a devolved issue.

Who says that ? lol That is madness

There is no impact papers to say what Scotland would face being out of the UK and the EU so please stop with that shite

Your being told by expects Scotland face being £12billion a year worse off with a hard brexit

not even a care in the world that the Scottish government ACTUALLY researched and put out impact papers of the effects a hard brexit will do to Scotland

Did your UK government do brexit impact papers ? No they did not!!

"

But you are the person saying that to avoid £12 billion per year from BREXIT you want independence which would lose £40+ billion a year.

Not even willing to say well done on the Scottish government actually doing their day job and releasing the brexit impact papers the UK government said they done but then said oh wait no we didnt do them ?

Do Scotland people not have a right to know what brexit will mean for our country ?

Not one of you have proof 100% of the impact Scotland will have with leaving the UK and EU. Why because the UK government havent done any and will never do afraid to let people see the truth Scotland will manage just fine as an independent nation

just like Norway and they have a wealth fund in the Trillions and that is a country of 5 million just like Scotland and has the same amount of oil good luck on trying to sell that one that Scotland is piss and poor lol

I think UnleashedCraken posted a link earlier in the thread which showed the £40 billion figure which you ignored. Besides are these experts you keep referring to same experts who predicted the UK would go into recession following a leave vote, it's now been a year and a half since the country voted Leave and still no sign of recession.

Add to that the fact that North Sea oil and gas now makes £0 net contribution to the Exchequer, and actually costs money, the figures are even worse.

Would Kinky vote for independence knowing that it would make every household in Scotland thousands of pounds poorer?

"I wasnt the one that said yes to accepting Scotland being £12billion a year worse off if it meant keeping Scotland in the UK

But you are the person saying that to avoid £12 billion per year from BREXIT you want independence which would lose £40+ billion a year.

Where you getting this £40 billion a year from eh ?

Show me the impact papers of Scotland leaving the UK and the EU ?

fact is expects have done their work on the brexit impact on Scotland and its saying Scotland will be £12 billion a year worse off with a hard brexit

The UK government couldnt even be arsed to do a brexit impact papers wanna know why ? they dont want the public to know Scotland will be hit worse off and people wanting independence they are shite feart and you know it

Now care to tell me how you came up with the 40 billion magic number ?

I think UnleashedCraken posted a link earlier in the thread which showed the £40 billion figure which you ignored. Besides are these experts you keep referring to same experts who predicted the UK would go into recession following a leave vote, it's now been a year and a half since the country voted Leave and still no sign of recession.

Which country you on about ?

You its piss poor people in the UK and poorly educated to think the UK is a country lol

Its a union of 4 countries

Britain is an island

the EU is a union of 27 independent countries

next you will be telling me the EU is one country lol

The UK has membership of the EU. Scotland does not and has never had membership of the EU on its own. "

Duh!!!!!!!!

So again which country are you on about eh ?

Tell me Centaur are you so against letting the Scottish people decide on the final brexit deal ? Afraid that they will say no thanks to brexit ?

The Scottish people already had their say on Brexit during the EU referendum which was a UK wide vote because it's the UK that has membership of the EU. Over 1 million Scots voted Leave in the EU referendum and those 1 million Scottish Leave voters contributed to Leave winning the overall UK wide vote.

This thread is like deal or no deal...

You have £12bn from the banker. Or you can keep the box no one has done an impact assessment on.

Dont tell me you’d accept the deal and make Scotland poorer. Traitor.

But the box may have a worse number in it.

Show me your evidence.

(Assuming no one has done the IA)

That doesn’t make the deal a worse deal. A known number isn’t better than an unknown just because it is known.

You’d accept the deal. Traitor.

Rinse. Repeat.

Oh right now you want to talk about democracy good lets talk about democracy

Here in Scotland people voted and elected the SNP on their manifesto and in that manifesto it says Scotland should have the right to hold an independence referendum when the final brexit deal is known

So their is the first part of the mandate given to the SNP who are the Scottish government

Then in Holyrood a debate and vote took place on a section 30 order and it passed 69-59 there is the second mandate given to the Scottish government by the Scottish parliament

Now that section 30 order is still there and has not been handed over as yet the Scottish government have said they are willing to try and get the best deal possible for Scotland and the UK to stay in the single market if its a hard brexit well then am 100% damn well sure that that section 30 order will be handed over to the Uk government and am seriously hoping Theresa May is a dumb fuck and refuses it as it plays into our hands as there is fuck all stopping Scotland have a non binding referendum say just like the EU referendum was and the Uk government seem hell bend on taking the UK out on that non binding referendum it wont look good to take the UK out on a non binding referendum then tell Scotland to piss off as the Uk government wont accept the Scottish non binding referendum they would look dumb as fuck

So what is the UK government getting wrong

Norway a independent country of 5 million and it's really successful and again pointing this out has a wealth fund in the Trillions

whereas the UK is Trillions in debt

So question is why do unionists think Scotland a country of 5 million and has alot of Scottish waters wont be as successful ?

Wee added bonus

On the debates on the EU referendum on the BBC Ruth Davidson said she wants to listen to the expects lol and she was all for remaining in the EU and single market

So be interesting to hear Ruth Davidson now if she is willing to listen to the expects say Scotland will be £12 billion a year worse off with a hard brexit

Very much doubt she will you see Scottish Tory branch office fall in line with the UK Tory party its been and always will be party before country and when i say country i mean Scotland

After all the UK has as much oil as Norway yet the debt is in Trillions of debt

ooofftt no wonder you wouldnt want to answer that"

If you could be bothered to read the link I posted you'd find that it also covers the possibility of Scotland using the revenues from North Sea oil to create its own wealth fund. It concludes that, without additional taxation or further cuts in spending, beyond the £7 billion a year required to replace the hole created by removal of the Barnet Formula, it would be totally impossible for an independent Scotland to create a wealth fund.

Scotland is not Norway. However well or badly Norway or any other country of about 5 million does is irrelevant. The analysis shows that in the best case scenario Scotland will be worse of by £40 billion a year if it separated from the UK. That's over 3 times worse of than £12 billion worse case scenario for BREXIT.

Are you willing to accept a £40 billion loss to Scotland to try and stop a £12 billion loss?.

The problem you and all nationalists have is that the arguments for closer union are the same or very similar for both the Scotland in the UK and the UK in the EU also the arguments for Scottish independence and the UK leaving the EU are the same or very similar. You can't use the economic argument for one and then totally ignore it for the other however much Scot Nats and BREXITers might like to.

Is there ANY scenario by which Scotland can stay in single market if the UK come out if it?

If tgey stay in UK they are, like the rest oft he UK...out!

If they leave UK...then no matter what the rest of UK does...they are out of EU AND single market...and (if they can ever meet the criteria....apply to join the EU, as Scotland isn’t a member of the EU) .

There is only ONE way Scotland can stay in the single market...and that would be (a) staying in the UK and (b) UK staying in single market.

Sadly not going to happen...both May and Corbyn (again on Peston, yesterday) have ruled that out!

Well that's not completely true either. Scotland could remain in both the EU and the single market and remain in the UK even if England, Wales and Northern Ireland left the EU. That was the offer made to Northern Ireland but rejected by the DUP. There is no legal reason why all the UK has to leave the EU. However the problem with that is that a Scotland in the EU and in the UK with the rest not being in the EU would have all downsides of independence (break up of the UK's single market and customs union) but Scotland still would not actually be independent.

I think you need to stop listening so much to what they say and start looking more at what they're actually doing and agreeing to do.

Corbyn is saying we can't be in THE single market and THE customs union because the treaties and mechanism for being in both are our treaties for being in the EU, which we will be leaving. However, when pushed, he is now saying we could be in A single market and A customs union with the EU. go figure what that actually means.

May has already agreed to regularity alignment with the EU which means the only BREXIT options left open is either no BREXIT or a fake BREXIT which will mean in fact, if not in name, we will be at the very least in A customs union with the EU

Because it had and still does have a lot more oil then Scotland would have had or will have. Not all British North See oil would have or will go to an independent Scotland either. Exactly where the English sector would end and the Scottish sector would begin is a matter for debate and negotiation but, wherever the line is drawn, there is quite a large chunk that would definitely be in an English sector.

Trouble with figures about how much it'd cost Scotland to leave the UK is that it's guesswork. The oil income complicates it, since the money paid to the Treasury from oil companies, found in their accounting, available online, is a great deal more than those in the official figures. This dates back to 2013 I think it was.

Lots of figures are bandied about but all of them are fantasy of various sorts.

It's quite simple, the income to the Exchequer from oil and gas is less than zero.

That would be one way but not the only way. There are already parts of the British Isles that are in the EU but not part of the UK (Republic of Ireland), under British Sovereignty but not part of the EU (Isle of Man, Chanel Islands), offered the option to stay in the EU and UK while the rest of UK leaves (Northern Ireland). All options are legally possible.

Now weird as hell Ruth Davidson now just wants to get on with brexit and leave the EU

So its party before the people and Ruth is willing to see damage happen to Scotland

Where as the SNP are the only party and government that have done their day job and done brexit impact papers showing Scotland will be 12 billion a year worse off with a hard brexit

"

Ruth Davidson is a democrat first and foremost and accepts the result of the EU referendum in which the British people voted to Leave. You in the other hand clearly have no respect for democracy.

"

Once again it was not a devolved Scottish vote. It was a UK wide vote as you well know. The UK voted to leave as a whole and those were the terms of the referendum. You claim to defend democracy with your grandstanding about Catalonia on other threads but it seems you really don't like democracy unless the result goes the way you want.

Bloody hell, a post from Centaur I agree with "

"Btw i noticed no one seemed to care that the EU withdrawel bill is getting debated today but not enough time to debate and vote on the amendements on the 111 powers being returned to Scotland but is going to unelected Lords for them to decide

Not important enough eh

What did i say months ago its a power grab from the Tories and not one of you can actually name one damn power being returned to Holyrood

Ah thats not important as CLCC loves saying Westminster is the real parilament and Holyrood is just made up shite but then wants the SNP to use the powers it has lol "

Do you realise that powers have to be returned from the EU to Westminster first, before any of those powers can be devolved to Scotland. The reason being Scotland is not a member of the EU on its own, so powers cannot be transferred straight from the EU to Scotland. Scotland has its current membership of the EU through the UK so powers must be returned to the UK Parliament in Westminster first. Then at a later stage powers reclaimed from the EU by Westminster such as fishing rights in Scottish waters for example can be devolved back to Scotland.

You have been given it 4 times.

Really where is the impact papers on this ?

You seem happy enough to accept Scotland being worse off with a hard brexit and £12 billion a year worse off

Is that the cost to keep Scotland in the Uk ?

You've been given the paper 4 fucking times! "

"OOffttt didnt like that one lol

Is it so hard to say Norway a country of 5 million is doing really well as an independent country ? and it has a wealth fund in the Trillion

What the fuck is the UK doing wrong eh ?

After all the UK has as much oil as Norway yet the debt is in Trillions of debt

ooofftt no wonder you wouldnt want to answer that"

I’ll answer this

A) taxation in Norway is much higher than taxation in the UK

B) Norway and their trillion dollar oil fund would have a 50 year head start on anything Scotland would propose

Which brings us back to the higher taxation... would you be prepared to pay much higher taxes... bearing in mind the snp figures were based on a oil price of 120 dollars a barrel, and also remembering that oil revenues brought in no extra money to the exchequer

Excuses , excuses

She told Scotland brexit would be bad now she is telling us we should just agree with what the UK government are doing even if it means damaging Scotlands economy

Centaur you dont accept democracy you clearly dont want Scotland having an independence referendum when the people of Scotland and Holyrood gave the Scottish government a mandate for an indepndence referendum

Btw its was Ruth that said in 2011 you have to earn a referendum and vote it through and a majority everyone of those things have been done thats true democracy in action

Well I'm going to partly agree with Kinky on the Clause 11 thing. However my main objection to clause 11 is the use of Henry VIII (orders in council) powers to decide which parts of current EU legislation will be devolved to the regional assemblies and which retained by Westminster. To be clear, if it wasn't for provisions in the Withdrawal Bill all areas of law to do with fisheries, agriculture and a few other areas would automatically end up under the competency of the devolved assemblies because currently those areas are not reserved to Westminster. However the current devolution acts do require that any laws passed by the devolved assemblies do not contradict existing EU law. It would seem sensible to me that the withdrawal bill should only reserve to Westminster those powers that are currently decided at EU level, so as to ensure a continuation of a harmonised single market within the UK. However by allowing the use of orders in council to decide which parts of agriculture, fisheries and other areas of law will actually be reserved for Westminster, the government could reserve more powers to Westminster than are currently decided at EU level without proper scrutiny in parliament or the devolved assemplies.

So, while I don't agree with him that all decisions currently made at EU level should now be devolved to the regional assemplies, he is correct to say that it is the provisions of the withdrawal bill that is preventing them from being devolved. I also agree with Kinky that the use of Henry VIII powers (orders in council) democratic accountability is being removed but then that's one of the biggest problems with the whole Withdrawal Bill and not just clause 11 and Scotland.

It would be a power grab as the devolved powers are in Holyrood already so if the Tories take back any of those powers that is a power grab correct ?

What powers are they telling us will be returned to Holyrood?

Surely all devolved powers should go right back to Holyrood?

No powers are devolved to the EU and decisions currently made at EU level have never been devolved to any of the regional assemplies. It's important to use the correct terminology if you want to make your point.

I'm still waiting for you to tell everyone if your happy to see Scotland £40 billion a year worse of or not.

Which non devolved powers is Holyrood going to get in this great powers bonzana?"

You call it a "power grab" others call it "reclaiming sovereignty" but it's powers that currently lay with the EU, not the Scottish Parliament. The Scottish Parliament is losing absolutely ZERO powers.

Now that's cleared up. Grow a pair of balls, and tell us if you would vote for independence if it is going to £40bn a year.

"reclaiming sovereignty'' = we want to take our country back and take devolved powers so we in England get to rule over other countries in the UK

None, Scotland never had any of these powers, so none can be returned. If any were given, it would be for the first time.

Nope. Of course "the Tories"/the government/Parliament are taking back powers. They are hardly likely to leave the EU with the powers are they????

That's up to parliament to decide, because, well you know, it is sovereign after all.

No powers will be returned to Holyrood which are currently decided at EU level. No powers can be returned to Holyrood currently decided at EU level because Holyrood didn't exist when the decision making powers were given to the EU. However all decisions currently made at EU level and not currently reserved to Westminster or by the withdrawal bill will, by default, be devolved.

The whole BREXIT thing is a power crab, that's what 'take back control' actually means. By the same token devolution and the push for independence is also a power crab by the SNP and Holyrood, isn't it?

Any that aren't currently reserved to Westminster or which aren't reserved by the Withdrawal Bill.

How you doing on giving us all an answer on the £40 billion cost per year to Scotland of independence?
