When the West door closes the EU looks East

Leaked EU documents last night showed that Eurocrats in Brussels want to expand the EU, East into the troubled Balkans region after Brexit. As the West door is now closed to the EU with opposition to it from America and President Trump and with the UK set to leave with Brexit in March 2019 the only option left for the EU is to look East. Leaked EU documents showed Eurocrats want Serbia and Montenegro to join the EU by 2025, and then Albania, Bosnia and Macedonia and Kosovo shortly behind, totalling an extra 18 million people in the EU bloc.

Conservative MEP David Campbell Bannerman said, "When looking at these new arrivals, I don't see any net contributors."

I wonder how EU net contributors like France and Germany will feel about footing the bill for the EU expansion East? Also with growing opposition to increasing levels of immigration in the EU how will French, Austrian, Dutch, Italian and German citizens react to having an extra 18 million EU citizens with potential access to free movement of people and access to the border free Schengen zone?

All I can say is thank god we are leaving all this behind when Brexit is complete. The Leave campaign did warn about these new countries joining the EU during the referendum but Vote Leave was met with charges of 'scaremongering' and 'it will never happen' by rabid swivel eyed Europhiles and Remainers. It seems now though the warnings by Vote Leave were justified and the Europhiles and Remainers were wrong.

I've seen Borat, so you're right to be afraid of all those funny backwards southeastern Europeans with their silly alphabets and unpronounceable names. They're all beggers rapists and criminals anyway (when they're not having wars with each other)

What a load of crap! What's stopping it expanding west you ask? The Atlantic ocean.

You wonder how France and others feel about it? Well they have a veto over it, so they either want it to happen, or it won't happen.

You're glad we are getting out? If we had stayed in, we would have a veto over new countries joining, now we are leaving, we won't. But, if they join, they may have ECJ judges ruling on British cases, and we will probably still be making budget contributions to.

Europe is a peninsula of the Eurasian supercontinent and is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Mediterranean, Black, and Caspian Seas to the south.

The phase 1 negotiation agreement between Britain and the EU says that the role of the ECJ will come to an end here after Brexit. The ECJ will be a voluntary referral court for 8 years after Brexit where the UK Supreme court will voluntarily refer cases to the ECJ if it wants to. Ultimately the UK Supreme court will be the court in full control of the UK after Brexit. Then after those 8 years are up, the ECJ won't even be available as a voluntary referral court anymore. The ECJ will be banished from the UK for good.

No you're wrong. The EU and the UK are currently in the process of making the phase 1 agreement legally binding, after David Davis made comments about it only being a statement of intent. The EU came out with a shite response saying it was a gentleman's agreement for about 10 seconds before they changed their minds and said it had to be made legally binding. Who are the real fools here? You and other remainers keep calling David Davis thick or stupid, but did he pull the EU's strings and lead them down the garden path to get them exactly where he wanted them,....to make phase 1 legally binding which would see the role of the ECJ come to an end in the UK for good.

When the UK voted to leave the EU that was a metaphor and symbolic of the West door closing in the EU's face, so now they are looking East. That seems to have gone straight over your head though (and one or 2 others who posted recently).

What a silly comment. There was never any prospect of the USA joining the EU but the USA 'was' a firm ally of the EU when they had pro EU Presidents like Obama. Now less so with a Eurosceptic President like Trump. As I said America slammed the door shut in the EU's face with the election of Trump.

The idea Trump holds any sort of position beyond what he thinks will bring him praise at that very moment is wrong.

Also, that the USA "slammed the door firmly shut in the EU's face" is less a reality and more an excerpt from your personal fan fiction.

But Australia does take part in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The reasoning is basically down to TV rights. The simple fact is, Australia’s host TV broadcaster SBS is part of the European Broadcasting Union, otherwise known as the EBU and that's what qualities it to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Also Malta is not technically part of Europe (It's technically an island off Africa) but part of the EU. The qualifying rule for EU membership is not being part of the Continent of Europe but having close cultural or physically ties with Europe. Technically not only could Canada apply for membership and get it but so could Australia, New Zealand or even the US. However, so far, only Canada has actually looked at the possibility in any serious way although (quell surprise) the Canadian Conservative party is dead against it and its Liberal Party and Labour Party aren't overly keen right now either.

Yes, your comments are silly, there are no countries in western Europe that aren't already in the EU. If you are not talking about countries joining, but trade deals, then Canada has just signed a trade deal with the EU.

Oh dear, Centaur, this is on par with your post claiming that Davis won the battle of the summer with his immediate surrender.

The Tories did not want the phase 1 agreement to be legally binding. Why? Because they capitulated on every aspect of negotiations and gave the EU everything they wanted.

Your claim that Davis manipulated the EU is ridiculous but let me explain how.

You claim that Davis made his comments to push the EU into making it legal. This means that the Tories wanted it to be legal and that the EU did as well (since hearing Davis say otherwise made them push for it). So if thats the case wouldnt both of them just agree to do it since they both wanted it?

Or maybe you claim that the EU didnt want it to be legally binding in which case hearing Davis say it wasnt would mean they'd be quite happy and nothing would have been done to make it legal.

What actually happened is that Davis didnt want it to be legal, said so on the radio to appease hardliners and then the EU said that there was no way the UK could go back on the agreement so they were going to make sure of this by making it legally binding.

And by making it legally binding Davis has further restricted the UKs options and weakened their bargaining position.

For half a century, the UK spent an enormous pile of its treasure, along with others, to free people in eastern Europe from the tyranny of dictatorship.

The Cold War stand-off led to the collapse of communism and the embrace of democracy by countries rediscovering their independence.

Bringing these countries and their populations into the single market of the EU, with its commitment to capitalism, trade, human rights and freedom of the individual from tyrannical rulers, is the prize for winning the Cold War.

I'm all for it, though I hope the EU learns some lessons from what it did in Ukraine.
