(BBC News)... Virgin Trains has announced that it is going to stop selling the Daily Mail newspaper on its West Coast trains.

A spokesperson for Virgin said it regularly reviewed products sold on its trains, adding that "after listening to feedback from our people" it decided to stop stocking copies of the paper.

Drew McMillan, head of colleague communication and engagement at Virgin...

"There's been considerable concern raised by colleagues about the Mail's editorial position on issues such as immigration, LGBT rights and unemployment.

"We've decided that this paper is not compatible with the VT brand and our beliefs."

How many copies of the paper on average do Virgin sell on their trains? Did they give the figures? I would imagine the figure to be pretty small anyway as most people would buy their morning paper from shops on the way to the train station or at a news stand in the train station before boarding.

Would Virgin trains bar or stop people from coming onto their trains if they were carrying a copy of the newspaper? Seems like a pretty ridiculous and petty policy to me and some avid Daily Mail readers could now look for alternative trains to use other than Virgin over this. This is nothing short of an attempt at corporate censorship by Virgin trains, so much for living in a free country?

Refusing to carry something that wasn't selling isn't censorship.

Refusing to stock something for any reason whatsoever isn't censorship.

If Waterstones won't stock the novel just scrawled in crayon on the back of an envelope, am I being censored?

No, they just don't want to stock something shit. Same for the Daily Mail.

Is there some sort of rift developing in all walks of life?

A divide, two factions, both taking the moral high ground. Both arguing their point, both believe they are right? To remove something because the editorial doesn't fit in with your agenda or what you support sends a clear message.

Pretty obvious coming from the Branson brand. I wonder where his loyalties lie?

Possibly a few folk will be taking their business elsewhere, feel a tad sorry for the folk who don't have a choice and have to use that particular brand.

It might be that they're just saving space by cutting away some worthless chaff and taking the opportunity to appear brave and socially aware by claiming it's to do with the Mail not sharing it's values.

Virgin is a pretty awful company, after all.

But it's still not censorship.

For those people who don't have a choice to use an alternative train service the solution is very simple, just by The Mail from a shop or news stand before you board the train. Then they can sit there smug reading it while going on their train journey. This policy from VT won't achieve anything.

Agree there Centaur just buy the paper on the platform or at your news stand.

I wonder if the Guardian is going to get pulled, their editorial is pretty biased too.

However, it is MY choice not to buy it (and their choice to print the shite they do to be fair).

I, therefore, have to disagree with Virgin trains...for taking away my, and other people’s, choice to boycott the crap for ourselves!

If they sold 1 per 4 trains, it's no great loss. I'm sure they have dropped other similarly poorly selling titles without any media attention.

Hubby said it reminds him of a specific night in Germany 1933 ... they started hauling out the books..and then..burning them..

It's called freedom of speech - If you can't deal with it then tough; the NSADP couldn't deal with and burned the books and newspapers of other thinking people. Every one has a right to say what they think, if there is a problem you speak up and state it...

Shame many don't read history and understand like my husband does, as you would suddenly notice, that we "marched" in the direction of 1984 and we are already the province of Oceania.

Just ask this question "What gets banned next?"

Really?

You equate a private enterprise refusing to stock a newspaper with a government destroying books and art it considered degenerate. Did you complain when the Tories banned schools from teaching pupils about homosexuality? Or is your problem that VT are refusing to carry the rag that was pro the Nazi book burners in the 30's and is now pumping out the same thinly veiled vile shite today?

its a bizarre and unjustified comparison, ironic too given the Daily Mail openly supported the Nazi's..

their recent vile headlines calling MP's traitors and whipping up some fuckwits to make death threats puts their drivel in the gutter but guess what they shouldn't be banned as a publication, maybe prosecuted for hate speech but that's another thread..

no books or publications have been

burned or banned from publication, it's 2018 and anyone can if they choose access whatever paper they want on their phone or even pick one up in the station prior to boarding..

Hubbys not very bright it seems.

According to the right wingers Virgin should have to stock every paper and magazine thats in print then? What about books? Refusing to stock books violates a persons right to read books instead of magazines or papers.

Maybe we should turn trains into fully stocked newsagents and libraries. There wont be much room left for passengers but what few remain wont have their rights violated because Virgin wont stock "Hoist" the magazine for people who use factory cranes or "The Hat Magazine" for....well I think you can figure that one out....wait forgot that we have people equating a train not stocking a paper they werent selling many of to Nazi Germanys government policy of censorship. Its a magazine about hats for people who really like hats.

Seeing as you bring up the burning of books it reminds me of the Corbyn cult Momentum morons who started buying up large amounts of copies of The Daily Mail and The Sun just before the general election in 2017, then making mini bonfires to burn them on. Before anyone denies it these idiots filmed it and posted the footage on various forms of social media. It was then also reported on in the press. The far left just cannot abide anyone having a different opinion to their own, and they claim to despise everything the Nazis stood for, then they go out of their way to copy and mimic the Nazi book burning process of written texts and ideologies they disagree with. Actions speak louder than words.

The concept of Freedom of speech is that the government cannot punish or censor you for what you say, and this only applies to the government.

Virgin Trains aren't the government, so this isn't a freedom of speech issue.

This has been another episode of "things that, as an alleged adult, you really ought to know already but apparently don't".

Seeing as those devilish leftists bought copies of the newspaper themselves, and are free to do as they please with it, and the Nazis confiscated books from other people and burned them, you'd probably want to try harder if you want to make a comparison that isn't so obviously wrong.

Actions speak louder than words.

more bile and hypocrisy from you Centaur, the man who refuses to condemn people who wear the regalia of the KKK and the Nazi's..

in your case lack of words speaks volumes..

For the umpteenth time on numerous threads, both sides were condemned in Charlottesville, both the Nazi wearing, KKK mob and on the other side the Antifa all dressed in black. Just how many times on how many threads do you want to have the same discussion?????????????"

When you answer the question instead of hiding behind cowardly rhetoric as you have done..

Do you condemn anyone who past, present or even the future who wears the regalia of the Nazi's and or the KKK?

If Centy lived in the US he would probably have a red pointy hat with mask and dress with a big cross on it (if they would have him), and have been proudly marching with his tiki torch AR15 and combats in Charlottesville screaming 'Blut und Boden' if his posts here are anything to go by."

No doubt if Will lived in the USA he'd have been wearing a black balaclava and dressed from head to toe in black, marching with the violent Antifa (if they would have him), and proudly marching with his baseball bat and combat knife in Charlottesville screaming "let's keep the red flag flying here" if his posts here are anything to go by.

"(BBC News)...

Didn't the daily mail run something about virgin trains about ticket price increases and virgin being bailed out by the taxpayer? "

Not sure about that, but I think the Daily Mail ran the story of Jeremy Corbyn sitting on the floor of a train when he pretended there were no seats available for him. Maybe it was a Virgin Train? As the train company later showed the cctv footage of Corbyn's journey it showed there were plenty of seats available. Shock, horror Corbyn is a liar and attempted to deceive people,.... but he got caught out.

There's no place in society for violent balaclava wearing Antifas either. You'll turn a blind eye to thuggish and violent behaviour as long as it fits with your ideology. Everyone knows now. "

I'll only condemn the Nazis.

Anybody taking the fight to the Fascists is somebody to be lauded - Anybody else forgets the sacrifice made by those in WW2 and is the kind of non-poppy wearing apologist liberal who society doesn't need.

Not surprised. You'll turn a blind eye to the violet leftists in the Antifa, who clubbed and beat people with bats that day, as long as it fits with your ideology though that's okay. "

what your saying is that we should condemn the person who fights back against the person wanting to murder their child or condemn the man who fights to defend his wife from the rap##t..

Unprovoked violence by anyone should be condemned regardless of what political beliefs are at play.

If someone expresses beliefs that are fascist or racist or liberal or communist or pro scientology or anything else then they have that right. If they are advocating violence then police should deal with them.

Violence is not the answer for opinions and beliefs we disagree with. Persuasion, ignoring them, calling them out and marginalising them are the tactics to use.

Bullshit.

There is a line - and that line is Fascism.

Fascists and Nazis don't listen to reason - give them half a chance and they will be gassing innocents of whichever coulor or creed they despise this time around. They deserve violence - because you reap what you sow.

Absolute bullshit

I quote from a newspaper

The frog-in-the-pot metaphor is overused in the Trump era, but for good reason. No matter how much we keep reminding ourselves that this is not normal, we can’t help but acclimate to the new atmosphere. It's become boring to point out for the millionth time that we're being ruled by a crackpot racist and a handful of vindictive 4chan fascists. But in Charlottesville, the temperature went up a little too quickly. Suddenly Democrats and Republicans alike looked around and realized that the country is boiling.

The sight of Nazis clubbing people in the streets of an American city isn't one that we’re used to, yet. Unlike other right-wing terrorist attacks, when this car rammed his car into a crowd of left-wing protesters, it was captured on video in screaming, visceral detail. And when Trump responded to this mayhem in the most predictable possible way, there was a sudden bipartisan gasp at what's happening to us.

"No doubt if Will lived in the USA he'd have been wearing a black balaclava and dressed from head to toe in black, marching with the violent Antifa (if they would have him), and proudly marching with his baseball bat and combat knife in Charlottesville screaming "let's keep the red flag flying here" if his posts here are anything to go by. "

I'm a fat old man Centy, but earlier in my life I and my mates did carry knives, they were all made by Wilkinson's, you may have heard of them they are called the Mk4 Fairbairn Sykes fighting knife, also know as the Commando knife. I have also worn a black nomex suit and balaclava once or twice.

And yes, I would definitely have been part of antifa. Of course you do know there are only to lots of people in this world fascists and anti fascists, antifi means anti fascist and is a label that the fascist mouthpiece breitbart thought up to equate anti fascists with the fascist white supremacist movement in the USA. Same as they came up with the 'alt right' to divert attention away from the fact that they are neo-nazies.

but I am sure you are fully aware of exactly what breitbart is all about, in fact I bet you subscribe and support them in everything they do.

You know, there's a very broad spectrum of people who despise Nazis, from the far left to the right - from Bevan to Churchill.

Place yourself outside of that very broad spectrum, Centy and one can only assume that you sympathise with the Fascists.

"How many copies of the paper on average do Virgin sell on their trains?

Who said it wasn't selling? Have Virgin Trains released the sales figures then? "

They sell like 70 a week. Barely a hit in their profits

Maybe you should read an American law book. You have the right to bear arms under American law so no law was being broken by simply carrying them. If you think any laws are being broken then make a complaint to the police and let the authorities deal with it. Once again vigilantism has no place in a civilised society.

And there we have it! Centy has come out of the closest!

Centy says there is no place or justification for killing Nazi's.

All those violent antifa in British, Free French, Polish, American, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, South African, Indian, and of course Russian uniforms were all in the wrong because in Centy's world the Nazi's and fascist are the good guys and anyone who stands against them is bad.

There is a world of difference between fighting the Nazis in a war and opposing them at a protest rally. If you think opposing people with violence at a protest rally is acceptable then shame on you. In a civilised society we have police to keep the peace and deal with law breakers, vigilantism has no place in a civilised society.

Rallies is how it all started. Read a history book.

It's not like the Nazis were hiding in Charlottesville - they were openly calling themselves Nazis and marching toting weapons.

Nazis are law breakers.

Maybe you should read an American law book. You have the right to bear arms under American law so no law was being broken by simply carrying them. If you think any laws are being broken then make a complaint to the police and let the authorities deal with it. Once again vigilantism has no place in a civilised society. "

Its not the arms they were carrying....its the way they were dressed and openly being fascists...a huge difference and nice try at deflecting.... HUGE FAIL again

If Nazis were walking down my street bearing arms I'd call the police and let the authorities deal with it. That would be against the law here in the UK so they would be arrested on the spot. As I said the right to bear arms in America is perfectly legal though, so is a different situation there. If you wanted to act the vigilante by putting a black balaclava on and attempt to beat them with a club or baseball bat though then that makes you just as bad as them in my view. Is your favourite film Death Wish starring Charles Branson by any chance? It's all about vigilantes, you and Bronson's character seem to have the same attitude.

Except of course for the white supremacist who was recorded shooting at protesters in front of police who did nothing...

But he did complain that he was living in fear after the video of him shooting at unarmed protesters was broadcast by NBC and CNN...

Also on a slightly different subject. You are correct the Mail did run a story about JC on a train, Virgin Trains did release video that showed empty seats, Richard Branson authorised the release of the video and made numerous statements about the incident. The last one being admitting that the video had been doctored, was fake and that there were no empty seats on the train at the time JC was seen sitting on the floor. But I am sure you already know that.

I am sure you are right but Centy like all fascists has to be confronted on every issue where he twists the truth. Because if he is not corrected he will later refer to his post and the fact that no one said he was wrong as evidence that he is right.

The Daily Mail is not guilty of hate speech. We have a press regulations authority and hate speech is against the rules. The Daily Mail operates within the rules, guidelines and framework of the press regulations authority.

If I get offended by this thread does that mean it's 'hate speech'? Or does it just mean I have issues?

"How many copies of the paper on average do Virgin sell on their trains? Did they give the figures? I would imagine the figure to be pretty small anyway as most people would buy their morning paper from shops on the way to the train station or at a news stand in the train station before boarding.

Would Virgin trains bar or stop people from coming onto their trains if they were carrying a copy of the newspaper? Seems like a pretty ridiculous and petty policy to me and some avid Daily Mail readers could now look for alternative trains to use other than Virgin over this. This is nothing short of an attempt at corporate censorship by Virgin trains, so much for living in a free country?

Refusing to carry something that wasn't selling isn't censorship."

They're not refusing to carry it because it's not selling though, are they?

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

It isn't selling - one copy per four trains was the figure given, but even if this wasn't the case, it still wouldn't be censorship.

The reasoning could literally be "Nobody should read this tripe" and not carrying the daily mail wouldn't be censorship.

Because, and I can't believe I have to do this twice in the one thread, freedom of speech protects you from the government, and nobody else.

All of the papers print trash depending on you're own point of view.

it's only on thr trains that you can buy it, it's still for sale on the stations and local shops

Would it be okay to take baseball bats to confront any edl march ? Do I need to do it under a banner or can I claim resistance starts at the individual ?

Can IS claim facism to justify their right to attack ?

Sounds like a PR exercise.

Maybe, instead of worrying about Brexit, olive oil in diets, bargain river cruise on the Rhine, LGBT rights, immigration etc, Virgin should worry about getting passengers from A to B on time and at a reasonable price!

Maybe it is, maybe not...

I think you mistake Virgin Rail for a service held in trust for the nation and run for the benefit of the country. Virgin is a limited company that is legally required to trade at a profit for the benefit of its shareholders with its purpose being to extract the maximum profits from all its revenue streams.

My error...and yours.

I used Virgin when I should have used Virgin Trains.

'Virgin Rail', as far as I am aware, doesn't exist. However Virgin Rail Group does.

The paper was removed for sale on the West Coast trains operated by Virgin Trains (legal name West Coast Trains Limited). This is a subsidiary of Virgin Rail Group, whose parent companies are Stagecoach Group & Virgin Group.

The paper had never been stocked on its East Coast trains under the management of Virgin/Stagecoach or rather East Coast Main Line Company Limited, trading as Virgin Trains East Coast, whose parent companies are Stagecoach Group & Virgin Group.

It doesn't matter. They're not the government, they're not banning or censoring the Mail. They're a private business deciding what newspapers to stock.

That is not in any way censorship. It seems they don't carry the Guardian. Is the Guardian being censored? Of course not.

Its a magazine about hats for people who really like hats."

Again ... how much did your family go through during WWII ? Part of his family were in KZ not Jewish but because they were left wing and teachers.. Part of his family did not survive the war and think they know what Nazi did and not did... It's nothing to do what should be sold and not..it's about the right of free opinion..Virgin is stating they do not want to sell a newspaper fine but is it not the free opinion of every one what they want to read and not...It's not about buy right, left, middle it's about freedom of speech..

With a ban the next follow and the next ban...

Wonder who isn't bright

There wont be much room left for passengers but what few remain wont have their rights violated because Virgin wont stock "Hoist" the magazine for people who use factory cranes or "The Hat Magazine" for....well I think you can figure that one out....wait forgot that we have people equating a train not stocking a paper they werent selling many of to Nazi Germanys government policy of censorship. Its a magazine about hats for people who really like hats.

Again ... how much did your family go through during WWII ? Part of his family were in KZ not Jewish but because they were left wing and teachers.. Part of his family did not survive the war and think they know what Nazi did and not did... It's nothing to do what should be sold and not..it's about the right of free opinion..Virgin is stating they do not want to sell a newspaper fine but is it not the free opinion of every one what they want to read and not...It's not about buy right, left, middle it's about freedom of speech..

With a ban the next follow and the next ban...

Wonder who isn't bright

"

What happened to his relations has literally nothing to do with his opinion. Hes not any better informed on the issues because of it. We're all aware of what happened in Germany.

And there is no ban. A stockist has decided they dont want to stock a publication. Its not censoring the daily mail anymore than its censoring The Hat Magazine.

Those on the right have been banging on for the last 30+ years that markets are paramount and should be allowed to decided what will and won't exist. And yet, when a private company uses the levers provided by the markets to try and influence what exists, this is somehow foul play? Perhaps the Mail should start a rail renationalisation campaign

"Hubby said it reminds him of a specific night in Germany 1933 ... they started hauling out the books..and then..burning them..

What a load of bollocks

Hmm and we got Mr Censure in the room.. you heard of free opinion ? Or is it just your opinion that counts and no one else? "

Censor and censure are two different things.

I am sure you are right but Centy like all fascists has to be confronted on every issue where he twists the truth. Because if he is not corrected he will later refer to his post and the fact that no one said he was wrong as evidence that he is right."

Their cognitive biases blind them to reality and right wing swivel eyed frothers avoid it

Not necessarily so. Newspaper Columnist Rod Liddle has said he has a ticket to use Virgin Trains this weekend (ticket was purchased before Virgin Trains announced they would no longer carry the Daily Mail). Rod Liddle said he intends to use his ticket as it's already been bought and paid for but he is also going to buy a large amount of Daily Mail papers before boarding and he is going to walk along the train handing copies out to passengers. Then when his journey is done he said he will never use Virgin Trains ever again.

Well they are leaving the massive sums of money that selling one copy of the daily mail on every four trains brought them on the table.

Maybe Virgin Trains should be forced to carry every newspaper and nagazine in existence? I would look forward to reading Gardeners Weekly and Birdwatchers Monthly alongside a copy of The Times.

Last week Virgin Trains banned the Daily Mail because of its 'beliefs'.

It's now lifting the ban because of its 'principles.

Lol, so the Daily Mail only 'took a hit' for 6 days in total then.

I'm wondering how Virgin Trains profit margins and tickets sales have been looking over the last 6 days.

Sir Richard Branson ordered the ban on the Daily Mail to be lifted on Virgin Trains and said the ban had been a PR Disaster for Virgin Trains.

Don't see Richard Branson admitting to it being a PR disaster...but then im guessing your quoting the Daily Fail. heres Virgins press release...and tbh its old news seen as it was removed in November...more spin from you yet again i suspect

When Virgin Trains took the decision back in November to remove the Daily Mail from sale, it was not part of some grand campaign or at my behest – indeed Brian Souter and I were not aware of the decision until we read the media reports this week.

The decision was made in response to feedback from some of our Virgin Trains employees. Brian and I respect our people when they make decisions and we listen to their views. It is the way we have always run our companies.

But we must also listen to the concerns voiced widely this week – by those who agree with the Mail’s editorial stance and those who vehemently disagree with it – that this move has been seen as censorship.

Freedom of speech, freedom of choice and tolerance for differing views are the core principles of any free and open society. While Virgin Trains has always said that their passengers are free to read whatever newspaper they choose on board West Coast trains, it is clear that on this occasion the decision to no longer sell The Mail has not been seen to live up to these principles.

Brian and I agree that we must not ever be seen to be censoring what our customers read and influencing their freedom of choice. Nor must we be seen to be moralising on behalf of others. Instead we should stand up for the values we hold dear and defend them publicly, as I have done with the Mail on many issues over the years.

So Brian and I have instructed our team at Virgin Trains to reconsider this decision and re-stock the Daily Mail while they undertake a full review of their sales policy, making clear that this policy should not single out individual media titles.

No mention of a PR disaster there
