The right to offend.
Jump to: Newest in thread
Leading on from the Political correctness thread which is really about the US reaction to the killings in NYC. An issue has been raised that I think is worth debating.
Do we have a right to offend? And if we do at what point, if at all, does the right not to be offended superseded the first right?
I would say the right to free speech (within the law) regardless of offence caused has to be sacrosanct.
It is every ones right to be a total arse and be seen for the total arse they are. |

It would be hypocrisy of the highest order on here to think that nobody likes offending people!.... The reality is this push from the left to think you can choose who is, isn't, can, can't, will or won't offend.
Personally I don't care if your offended, go home have a cuppa, watch Corrie, you'll be fine in the morning |

"I'd rather spend time effort and money teaching people how to deal with being "offended" better than waste time effort and money on thought crime " You're having a fine debate with yourself.Think about that. I'm not offended by your ideas. It's when speech leads to an effect, such as people being alarmed or distressed, that the law steps in.
Give me a concrete example of what you claim is a thought crime that impinges on yr right to free speech.

Islamaphobia" one word answer. Misspelled. No concrete examples. A shining example of incoherence in practice. If you are islamophobic surely the key question in not whether it's a thought crime, but why? |

No offence but your just talking bollocks for the sake of an argument...
If your Alarmed or distressed, the law steps in?... Distressed/offended, opposite sides of the same coin, load of leftist bullshit aimed at silencing everything and anything they don't like hearing. |

How have you been silenced exactly?
Being criticised isn't the same as being silenced.
This is part of the problem with this debate. Some people want to be able to have their free speech, but don't want others to have the right to reply... |

I like James O’Brien and think he talks a lot of sense. However I heard him say today that it is OK to say to a woman wearing a low cut dress "thats a nice dress" but it is sexual harassment to to say 'Cor! you look sexy in that' or 'your a real turn on in that dress!' or to wolf whistle.
Now rightly or wrongly in my opinion if you dress in a way that will attract attention then you have to accept that you will get attention, and you must also accept that some of that attention will come from people you disapprove of for whatever reason be it they are not your type or the attention is crude. To me everyone has to take a degree of responsibility for things they bring on themselves. |

"I've had a serious gripe for years about them coka cola adverts where a bunch of women objectify a young man going about his work.
They don't demean, assualt or bugger him though"
Really? Please tell me about this advert where a woman is "demeaned, assaulted or buggered" please.
I'll wait... |

It's pretty difficult not to be aware of this well known fact but thanks anyway. |

"No we are not, no one is allowed to mention islam or the pc brigade would start, sweden is a good example lol."
Yes, I hear Sweden is home to super Muslims who are here to destroy all that is pure in the world.

There are laws that protect minorities and people with protected characteristics that should be adhered to, before you think you have a right to free speech.
Same goes if you are in specific places that have restrictions - such as thinking you can say anything you fancy whilst going through airport security. Your actions carry consequences at all times.
Use your free speech to improve relationships and make the world a better place |

Recently there was a Red Dwarf episode where the boys for the Dwarf got on board a ship that was in trouble.
There had been a law passed amongst the crew that no one was allowed to criticise anyone else in case it "hurt their feelings" ... and as such, the result was chaos.
Seems the writers of Red Dwarf have taken to comedic comment on current trends in the UK lol. |

I wouldn't say the right to offend, but the right to say what others wouldn't like to be told. : constructive criticism, not something bigoted etc.. |

The right to free speech also comes alongside the right for people to call you on your bullshit opinions, a lot of people who harp on about not being allowed to voice their rhetoric forget that. |

Try wandering through Luton with a big picture of Mohammed... See if you get silenced" That's not actually an answer to the question is it? YOu were asked if you have been silenced, and came up with a hypothetical example straight out of some paranoid fantasy....
So we can take it that you haven't been slenced. |

"No we are not, no one is allowed to mention islam or the pc brigade would start, sweden is a good example lol." You just mentioned Islam, and you were allowed to do it. Do you think the 'PC brigade' are having the day off or somesuch?
The cognitive dissonance involved in whining that you're not allowed to talk about the things you never stop banging on about is astonishing... |

It does in my world anyway |
