It was interesting to note that the helpline for this benefit is a "pay line". It beggars belief that someone claiming this benefit is being charged? Unbelievable I thought Dick Turpin died a long time ago. I am not condoning anything but to charge a premium rate for those most vulnerable is just not fair - or is it? |

To be fair governments of all colours have done this.
And for clarity, it is a local rate number, rather than a premium rate number. Although some can ring this for free depending on their phone contracts, for others this can cost up to 55p a minute I think. However it's the phone company making the profit on that, rather than the tax payer. |

55 pence isn't a local cost, and tje tories had to be shared into making it free by covering the call costs.

My last bill i got charged over £20 for trying to find out were my parcel was lol....from a parcel company i think they use a ploy....
and just to be clear...THE government or the company do get some of the money for those charges |

No, the benefits fraud hotline was free, but I believe the rest are local call rate, as far as I am aware none of them are premium. However, the problem arises from the fact that most people, especially those on benefits, have ditched their landlines. With a landline phone local calls are relatively cheap, but with a mobile it doesn't matter if you ring a landline number in the next street, or the otherside of the country, its the same rate. When you have a contract mobile phone, you often get free minutes, so can call these benefits numbers for free, but people on benefits can have issues obtaining credit, such as for a phone contract, or struggle to pay the monthly bills. If you are on pay as you go, then often you dont get free minutes, and then that's why it can go up to the 55p per minute. |

The idea of a single 'universal' benefit is on the surface good. But when a little thought is put into it's implications it becomes a lot less appealing.
There are a number of groups who require assistance and all have different needs:
The employed on very low pay who need help making ends meet.
The unemployed, who need financial support and help finding work.
The long term sick and disabled, who need financial and medical support.
It is obvious that one size does not fit all, so why universal credit? Austerity and the 6 week waiting period from making an application to receiving first payment give a broad hint. The closing of some 68 job centres at the same time as the nationwide roll-out of universal credit is the confirmation that this policy is about cutting benefits and support to unemployed and poor rather than helping those at the bottom of the pile to improve their lives. |

Lots of numbers have changed on how there being charged now...i know on my phone contract 0345 and 0800 numbers are chargeable....i've been playing up hell with my phone provider...after getting them for free under my previous contract and then getting charged over £20 to receive my upgraded phone when calling the courier company to find out were it was !!! |

If there had been telephones and computers in Dickens time I'm sure the destitute would have been made apply to the workhouse on a 55p a minute call line where they got to spend the first 10 or 15 minutes listening to muszak being told their place in a queue by a computer generated voice every 20 seconds. |

Many claimants don't even get paid in the 6 weeks waiting period - but this is no surprise, as the scheme is inappropriate and not designed by people who really care about the vulnerable. Implementation of a premium number to call for help is another facet of the unfit for purpose scheme that the conservatives have designed.
They are charging high premium rates until some point in 2018. |
