Special brexit deal for NI
Jump to: Newest in thread
Northern Ireland's access to the single market is assured after party leaders strike a deal giving one part of the UK special treatment.
Northern Ireland will be permitted to stay within the customs union and single market Europe is expected to announce this week.
The motion is expected to be passed next week to coincide with a promise of substantial funding, certainly more than the £1.2 billion offered from the UK government to the DUP.
Sinn Fein is said to be delighted with the move pushed forward by its MEP Martina Anderson in back room meetings which excluded Northern Ireland's 2 other MEPs |

That would mean the UK/EU hard border being in the UK ports.
Sinn Fein will see this as a move towards possible reunification, and I've no doubt that Ms Sturgeon will have something to say but any agreement will ultimately have to be signed off by the UK Goverment. |

To have one nation of the UK in the single market and the other three nations outside it would be bizzare. This could lead to UK breaking up.Because if it's good enough for northen Ireland its good enough for scotland or wales. |

"The party leaders might agree but i doubt the EU will as NI is part of the UK lol
Sinn Fein are confident with their assurances from Europe that the deal will be signed off in the next few days"
Any news on how the DUP feel? |

the DUP wouldn't say no to that deal..... as others have said the big problem is that if that was the case then Sturgeon would be fuming!!! and it would put ruth davidson and the scottish tories in a particularly awkward position.... |

Unfortunately for Ms Sturgeon, Scotland does not have a border with another EU country. And that's a fact she won't be able to twist to suit her agenda.

No word from the DUP, but the TUV leader said, "the promise of Northern Ireland staying in the single market and customs union is not worth a row of buttons without agreement from Downing Street. And we must remember who Downing Street depends on in power - not a party who would want to see any constitutional challenge on the union". |

This is the only realistic solution and its one that will suit the EU. But the DUP surely wont support an idea that leaves Northern Ireland closer to Ireland than the rest of the UK.
However if they do, then its a major obstacle removed from negotiations. |

this..
Surely have one of the nations of the UK in the SM and CU whilst the others are not will lead to internal capital flight for companies which require those facilities?
Will we have the Norway Sweden issue where people pop across to NI to bulk buy good to avoid and potential tarriffs?
risky strategy.."

The EU. Guy Verhofstadt said last week during the debate prior to the vote on not to move on with the next phase of discussions, that he wants an agreement attached to the Brexit withdrawal deal to ensure the Good Friday Agreement is protected, so it is taking shape |

"So the Irish government have just come out and said that an open border between the UK and Ireland is impossible "
It is, theres no way that there can be a free flow of goods from the UK to Ireland and Ireland to the rest of the EU. The goods from the UK wont meet the standards set by the EU if the UK roll back regulations.
There also cant be a hard border between Northern Ireland and the rest of Ireland as it will damage the local economy and could increase tensions. The only logical way forward is to keep Northern Ireland in the single market and keep the hard border between NI and the UK. |

Yes but youre missing their point.
There MUST be a hard border between the UK and the single market. And there MUST NOT be a border between Ireland and N. Ireland. And theres only 1 way to accomplish that. |

The revenue service has produced a paper dealing with the effects of a border between the EU and UK. A seperate customs union and a seamless border have been deemed unworkable between N. Ireland and Ireland.
They havent said that there must be a hard border between Ireland and the north because that is neither in their remit nor the reports. It is simply stating that Mays fantasy of a seperate customs union and seamless border is unworkable. |
