Imagine a white person saying voting should be fixed so that only a white person could be chosen in the Cotswolds for example.
Put up white black green yellow candidates and let the constituents decide
Diane Abbott has said Labour should ban white candidates from standing for the party in certain constituencies, in an attempt to increase the number of ethnic minority MPs in parliament.
The shadow home secretary suggested it is time for the party to require all potential candidates in select constituencies to be nonwhite, with local Labour parties required to pick a candidate from a minority background. |

I care a lot less about the colour of the candidates than I do about their policies. Engaging local folk in politics remains an uphill battle in some areas. In Birmingham I’m told that vast swathes of women from non white ethnicities don’t vote - shocking. |

Rather than talking about curtailing candidates on ethnic grounds how about the onus being put on the parties to nominate people from the very community they represent and come from.
There would be no need for this then as hopefully it would occur naturally over time base on the areas demographics.
Or is that not sensible enough? |

it is actually called the "rooney rule" in the states (because it was championed by pittsburgh steelers owner dan rooney) because in a league that was primarily black... the coaches and head coaches were majority white.....
so all that was asked is that on all coaching shortlists... there must be at least one minority candidate, because the theory being because they were not being interviewed and people seeing what talent their was... they were being held back...
it has worked in the NFL.... and the NBA....
it is actually being piloted in the EFL for academy jobs and above.....
Key figures from the 'Rooney Rule' pilot
123 academy jobs were advertised on the EFL website.
The EFL received data relating to 76 of those jobs.
1,497 applications were received for those 76 jobs.
In 170 of the applications, the candidate defined their ethnicity as BAME (11%).
18% of the 1,497 applications led to an interview, increasing to 31% for all BAME applicants, and 52% for the 99 applications made by BAME candidates who were suitably qualified for the role.
11 BAME candidates were appointed to the 76 jobs (14%). |

This is a UK site with majority of UK posters. When the term 'football' is used here it means football as in the FIFA variation, maybe I should have put 'soccer' in the post just for your benefit.
American football is always referred to as 'American football' by Brits and no where in my post did I mention the word 'American'. The idea of having shortlists for black managers in the F.A Premier league or the championship or lower football (soccer) divisions died on its arse years ago, because it's a shit idea that no one liked. Football (soccer) Managers should and always will be selected on talent and ability to do the job here rather than colour of skin and frankly that's the way it should be. |

The idea of having shortlists for black managers in the F.A Premier league or the championship or lower football (soccer) divisions died on its arse years ago, because it's a shit idea that no one liked. Football (soccer) Managers should and always will be selected on talent and ability to do the job here rather than colour of skin and frankly that's the way it should be. "

Nothing to do with their ability to do the job or how good a football manager they are they get selected on the shortlist simply because of the colour of their skin. The idea didn't last long in the football world and the idea was thrown on the scrapheap of history where it belongs. "
This very good idea is inspired by the NFL Rooney rule, whereby there must be at least one not white candidate interviewed for a managers position.
If you're looking for the best possible candidate, being forced to look outside what you would default to is a pretty good idea.
But apparently the FA felt that with the wealth of white talent at their disposal this was something they could do without.

I do think children being educated in a multicultural multi faith environment can very useful.However this isnt happening.We segregate our children based on faith and social status.How many generations before we are free of discrimination if we take the softly softly approach.
I think we prefer to sweep this issue under the carpet and ignore it and hope it all works out fine.

it is actually called the "rooney rule" in the states (because it was championed by pittsburgh steelers owner dan rooney) because in a league that was primarily black... the coaches and head coaches were majority white.....
so all that was asked is that on all coaching shortlists... there must be at least one minority candidate, because the theory being because they were not being interviewed and people seeing what talent their was... they were being held back...

By your own admission this has not been fully implemented in the EFL the evidence you provided only points to a pilot scheme. It was suggested years ago in the EFL if anyone was serious about it then it would have been fully Implemented by now. It's a shit idea and that's why it's only remained as a pilot scheme. |

The idea of having shortlists for black managers in the F.A Premier league or the championship or lower football (soccer) divisions died on its arse years ago, because it's a shit idea that no one liked. Football (soccer) Managers should and always will be selected on talent and ability to do the job here rather than colour of skin and frankly that's the way it should be.
