Boris and the 350 million pound fib

Maybe fib is being a bit kind since it's a blatant lie....

So here is a question for our leave friends..

Do you cringe every time someone brings it up?

I know it's usually used by those on the other side to bash you around the head with but when one of your own uses it, does it feel like a bit of an own goal?

When it gets to the stage the head of national statistics writes to boris to ask him to stop using the figures because they are not true, have we reached a level of silliness

I brought this up last week....we all knew it was a blatant lie then not a fib.

Im more worried about the car manufacturers and what they have been saying at the Frankfurt motor show about brexit....very worrying....and them even saying now how disorganised this govenment is....looks like we might be losing 1000's of jobs....fingers crossed we wont

Here we go again....!

Surely if the UK doesn't have to give money to the EU once we have left the EU, then the UK government can spend it else where within the UK.

Do you know the difference between "gross" and "net"?

If my salary is 40k, how much do I have available to spend on bills groceries and entrance to swinging clubs?

Fair comment. However when the job was advertised it would have said salary 40k.

To be honest I really wish that the leave camp hadn't used the 350 million figure.

While it could e argued as "true" in one sense we all know that it was, at best, disingenuous.

The net figure would have had the same impact and couldn't have been argued with.

After saying that some of the scare tactics used by remain were just as bad, if not worse.

The problem with the net figure is that most of the people who have benefited from EU grants tend to be those who are disengaged from political debate. A case of the squeaky wheels getting the most grease!

Just for the sake of clarity here are the figures now ( which ironically are lower now since the devaluation of the pound)

The overall figure now would be 325 million..... after rebate it is actually 265 million... and then after money that comes back via projects and subsidies it's now about 150 million

Anyway it puts may in an awful position where she can't say the statistics authority is wrong, but can't rebuke johnson for fear of him resigning

So the question for the leave camp is: Where do community groups get the EXTRA £175 million from?

Indeed...but some of the scare tactics as you say are coming true...i.e the car industry.

Do you know these a poll out and it says that 7% of those who voted leave would change there minds now to remain...given everything thats come out.

And when i said the remain campaign wasn't much better...i meant they didn't campaign hard enough to stay in

Not really. In my opinion Boris Johnson is a clown.

Who trusts what any politician says anyway? I didn't trust what the majority of the Leave campaign said. I didn't trust what the majority of the Remain campaign said.

I did my own research and made my decision based on that.

Probably not the answer you wanted to hear!

There should be means testing on farming subsidies. Far too many don't actually need them. Is it really necessary to pay £56 per hectare per annum to the wealthy owners of grouse moors?

However I fear the NFU and other lobby groups will ensure payments will continue!

In 1984, the New Zealand Goverment stopped farm subsidies totally.

Their farming industry is now one of the most efficient, innovative and profitable in the world.

How about the money invested from the European Investment Bank, are you counting that? Last year that was just under £7bn.

How about the money that the EU gives to private institutions in the UK (rather than government), such as universities, is that also included in your calculations?

Bojo seems to have underestimated his popularity, as the rest of the cabinet have looked at his latest stunt and are berating him like the stupid fucker he is.

In particular Gove has a keen memory for betrays about a year ago and is having nothing to do with this.

With such keen minds and unity, how could Brexit possibly be bad?

Up to 7 per cent of the people who voted for a Brexit in the EU referendum now regret their choice, new research has found.

When the survey’s findings are projected on to last week’s vote, they would cut the Leave share by 1.2 million, almost wiping out the majority that gave Friday's shock result.

Research by Opinium found that 3 per cent of those who voted Remain also regretted their choice and that British people are now divided on the priorities in the negotiations ahead.

That's less "thing we've learned" and more "thing we've always found convenient to believe".

What people really should have learned is what "margin of error" means and that poll is not synonymous with ironclad promise.

No I didn't get a vote as I've been gone for over 15 years.

As it is at the moment I think leave would still win although with a smaller majority.

However if the EU try to move the goal posts (as I mentioned on another thread) then I think leave could increase its majority.

Up to 7 per cent of the people who voted for a Brexit in the EU referendum now regret their choice, new research has found.

When the survey’s findings are projected on to last week’s vote, they would cut the Leave share by 1.2 million, almost wiping out the majority that gave Friday's shock result.

Research by Opinium found that 3 per cent of those who voted Remain also regretted their choice and that British people are now divided on the priorities in the negotiations ahead.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-news-second-eu-referendum-leave-voters-regret-bregret-choice-in-millions-a7113336.html

So based on those figures leave would still win then.

What do you think? and btw did you have a vote ?

No I didn't get a vote as I've been gone for over 15 years.

As it is at the moment I think leave would still win although with a smaller majority.

However if the EU try to move the goal posts (as I mentioned on another thread) then I think leave could increase its majority."

How come you never?

Nah there goalposts have aleays been there...and id be willing to bet you the result would go the other way....all the indications are there along with some actual facts this time....the leavers have been showed up for what they are "!!!

As for people being showed up for what they are. That could be said about Juncker and Barnier.

They seem more hell bent on punishment than actually looking for any kind of deal.

Even remainer in chief Vince Cable has called for Juncker to be replaced.

Hmmm ok then

seems to me they just want what we committed to...but ok.

i think juncker quite a nice chap tbh...he seems pretty levelheaded ....he thinks like most of the motor manufacturers think about the governments approach to the negotiations.

I quote this is from them having a meeting with May...Davis and the rest of the motley crew on them

The Government faces a growing revolt from carmakers in Britain unhappy at the slow pace of clarity over post-Brexit customs arrangements crucial to their business model.

Sky News has been shown internal industry memos, circulating at the Frankfurt Motor Show, expressing exasperation at the state of preparedness for changes to customs - which could come in in March 2019 and for which immediate investment and staffing is required.

A recent meeting with Government was described as "disillusioning" because of a "lack of detailed information and blocking of our questions".

Officials were described as having "no concrete idea of how to apply [customs] proposals".

The concept of the UK being "punished" as it's being used here, is one people in the UK are going to have to get used to.

The UK is the smaller side with the weaker hand, and poorer diplomats, in the negotiations with the EU - so they're not going to get everything they want.

Apparently, this state of affairs is the fault of everyone BUT the UK.

I've just Googled 'the facts' as you call them. The poll you quoted is from June 2016 so hardly relevant today!

The paragraph below the headline is 'research suggests that if a second referendum were held, the vote would be much closer.'

It goes on to say '3 per cent of those who voted Remain also regretted their choice.'

My mistake, I had thought that he had been an MEP, but he hadn't. He was elected to his current position by the 729 MEPs. To compare this to some other systems, the US has 538 electors who chose the President and VP. Theresa May won a leadership election which started off with 329 votes, but eventually she was unopposed after others withdraw or were eliminated in early rounds of voting and she won by default. Xi Jingping was elected by 205 members of the Central Committee.

So here is a question for our leave friends..

Do you cringe every time someone brings it up?

I know it's usually used by those on the other side to bash you around the head with but when one of your own uses it, does it feel like a bit of an own goal?

When it gets to the stage the head of national statistics writes to boris to ask him to stop using the figures because they are not true, have we reached a level of silliness"

Acting as a last bulwark against populist, irresponsible demagogues is part of the purpose of the electoral college.

There is an argument to be made that they should have done exactly that.

Well, elect, rather than eject.

Isn't it great that at a time of uncertainty, where we indeed need 'strong and stable' leadership, the Tories are once again in-fighting and jostling for leadership contests?

I mean, obviously that is part of how we got in this Brexit mess in the first place. But it's nice that they've learned absolutely nothing.

"Just for the sake of clarity here are the figures now ( which ironically are lower now since the devaluation of the pound)

The overall figure now would be 325 million..... after rebate it is actually 265 million... and then after money that comes back via projects and subsidies it's now about 150 million

Anyway it puts may in an awful position where she can't say the statistics authority is wrong, but can't rebuke johnson for fear of him resigning "

Never one to argue with your figures Fabio.... but actually Boris was much more careful this time.

He talked about the money we "have control over" which could be argued (with a bit of poetic licence) to be the gross figure.

From which we receive a rebate (though this is backdated) and we also receive regional grant aid. Leaving (when I last looked) a "net" contribution of around £180 million a week.

I'm sure tho, that he knew the headlines would miss the subtlety of his language....and stir the shit which he obviously intended.

"Here we go again....!

Anyone over school leaving age (maybe earlier) will be familiar with a phrase called "take home pay".

Of course but when was the last time you saw a job Ad quoting take home pay?

Not very often...but twice now we have seen a politician tell bare faced lies to the public....the guys a disgrace and should not be in office...tells you a lot on how the leave campaign was run....but saying that the remain campaign wasn't run that much better

Indeed...but some of the scare tactics as you say are coming true...i.e the car industry.

Do you know these a poll out and it says that 7% of those who voted leave would change there minds now to remain...given everything thats come out.

And when i said the remain campaign wasn't much better...i meant they didn't campaign hard enough to stay in "

Is that the same poll that's got May on 51% and Corbyn on 35% on being able to manage Brexit?

Juncker has been elected.

Who was he elected by?

In another post you claimed he was elected as an MEP. Do you still stand by that?

My mistake, I had thought that he had been an MEP, but he hadn't. He was elected to his current position by the 729 MEPs. To compare this to some other systems, the US has 538 electors who chose the President and VP. Theresa May won a leadership election which started off with 329 votes, but eventually she was unopposed after others withdraw or were eliminated in early rounds of voting and she won by default. Xi Jingping was elected by 205 members of the Central Committee.

So he was elected by 729 MEPs?

Really?

729 MEPs voted on it, yes."

Good response

So following that logic then 34 Million voted for Brexit.

"Isn't it great that at a time of uncertainty, where we indeed need 'strong and stable' leadership, the Tories are once again in-fighting and jostling for leadership contests?

I mean, obviously that is part of how we got in this Brexit mess in the first place. But it's nice that they've learned absolutely nothing. "

This is why the current model of democracy is a crock of shit... Nothing can be done whilst people are playing a short term popularity contest in the background

"Here we go again....!

Surely if the UK doesn't have to give money to the EU once we have left the EU, then the UK government can spend it else where within the UK.

Do you know the difference between "gross" and "net"?

If my salary is 40k, how much do I have available to spend on bills groceries and entrance to swinging clubs? "

I never mentioned a figure so "gross" and "net" make no different.

So however much we do not give to the EU is money that can be spent in the UK.

No rocket science is it..!

We have to pay for our commitments ie....what we have agreed to fund up to leaving....its like a phone contract...you agree it...if you leave you have to pay for the remaining period...unless you want the debt collectors around and get a bad credit rating

Your obviously one who believed that moron BoJo "

Well apparently our legal team have said we do not have to give them a penny.

Once they have assembled their EU army (which the remainers said will not happen) they can try and come get it!
