Trump band transgender people in military.

context first......
there has always been a ban on transgender people serving in the military....
what then president obama proposed was that transgender people be allowed to openly serve in non frontline roles.....
that decision was put back by 6 months at the beginning of the trump administration
trump has basically reversed that decision....... |

"What I understand. Trump said they can not serve in "any capacity" in military "
.... and this is now the quandry
when president obama decided on this change of policy... around 300 people in the armed forces come out as transgender
they delayed new transgender people from enlisting so those people so i assume will just be refused
the question now becomes what happens to those who "came out"? |

His opposition to LBGT groups, ethnic minorities and so on was known before the election.
He's been democratically elected.
So let's respect this, it's what the majority of people want |

Uh, no. That's not how it works. Democracy doesn't mean you have to automatically respect the decisions that leader takes.

As I wrote in the other thread on the same topic....
We'll see how far this actually goes. The military has actually be very accepting of various sexualities serving. Besides, the policy will likely be changed once he's out of office or in the near future.
It's hard to sustain the US military in the numbers it requires. With people becoming more open about their sexuality necessity will eventually dictate acceptance, even if nothing else does. |

"Explains why America has the nickname of dumbfuckistan with people I know.. "
The vast majority of North Americans are decent people.
The very same people who make statements like that are in fact just as bad as the people they're trying to make out as prejudice.
It's a beautiful country....with political problems like anywhere, though looking into the UK from outside, many have the same opinion of us post brexit. |

How do you know it is what the majority of people want, he did not achieve a numerical advantage in the actual number of votes cast..
and the irony of talking about 'respect' and Trump with his history of exploitation in general, racist practises in business and whilst in office thus far and his attitude toward women is a bit of a stretch..
Should the country have respected the poll tax? |

Wowzers!
Why does it cost so much money for them to be in the military i wonder.
"
Do they demand more flamboyant uniforms? If not, it's hard to see the assitional costs. |

There are 2 countries in the world that really have the power to shape world events. That breeds a lot of jealousy, especially from a country that used to occupy that #1 position. |

What does that make a less economically successful country like ours then? Federal republic of sour grapes? "
Ah but ours isn't propped up by over a million unpaid workers... equally we dont have such an enormous youth drug problem. etc etc ..You should base a country's success upon more than the flow of cash. |

Speaking as a serving officer in the British army my view on this subject is irrelevant.
I will leave it up to those in civvy street who know best on here to decide how the American military should be run. |

You've got to admit that before the election, everyone knew he was fairly racist, misogynistic, and anti LGBT.
Based on that knowledge, he was elected president.
Therefore it's a fair assumption these views are held by a majority of people. I'd say the same goes in the UK. Tolerance, inclusivity and political correctness has had it's day now. Things have changed |

If it helps, China is still strongly pushing free trade rather than protectionism and i predict that we will see a bunch new chinese created institutions to rival the world bank and WTO. So when america is no longer the world leader then you can come ask British people for advice on dealing with perpetual decline. |

If anyone wants to feel that way, who am I to say it's wrong?
If a large number of people feel that way and vote for a president who also feels that way, who am I to say it's wrong?
By all means you can have the opposite view, but the way the world is now going, I think the LGBT agenda is pretty much irrelevant. |

Acting so meek would you extend that who am I statement to female genital mutilation ? How about arranged marriage, treating ra ped women as wrong doers . What example of one human degrading another in thoughts or actions would be enough to proudly vocalise it's wrong ?

So it's ok to dismiss trans soldiers because of their sexuality, but perfectly acceptable for the commander-in-chief, with power to order nuclear strikes without any moderating discussion from his generals, to be mentally unstable?
Red meat to his base so they might forget he has failed to deliver on his headline policies.
Sad, so sad. |

Apparently, there are 15,000 trans service personnel in the US armed forces and the military hierarchy is mostly tolerant to appreciative of their contribution.
Purely on a practical basis, it is silly to turn back the clock - not just the loss of trained and loyal personnel, arousing the antagonism of their colleagues for such narrow-minded action, setting back the image of the military, but also creating the basis for a huge human rights class action law suit.
It's just dumb. |

A broken clock is right twice a day, and to be honest I think Trump may be right this time.
The reasoning is not politically correct, nor is the reason fair and reasonable, but it is valid.
The military, by nature is closed community of violent and regressive mainly hetrosexual individuals. There is no room in military training or thinking for shades of grey, it is either right or wrong, good or bad, friend or foe and if it is a threat it requires neutralizing. It does not breed 'touchy, feely' people who are comfortable with sexual diversity. It breeds (officer) controlled violent people. Dropping openly gay and transexual people into such a community is in my view a recipe for disaster.
So with regret, I find myself having to agree with little donnie, it is just a shame his reasons are based in his open bigotry rather than in what is best for the military and more importantly the safety of those who are transgender.
And if you dont believe me please read this Independent article before telling me I am a dinosaur and the military have changed since I served.

Not knuckle dragging hick. To be honest the days of armies being fill with those is long gone. But military training is designed to accentuate aggression and teach muscle-memory so that when commanded or stimulated by fear or revulsion the result is unfettered violence. As for your comment about unnecessary wars, can you please name one? I could not, I don't think I could name one. |

Unfortunatly Trump is sharing the views of the majority I reckon.
Having spent some time in the US some years ago I find it is a nation of many different values and many are religious bigots, many are Nazis and many are stupid.
This is not true of all Americans it is complex society of wonderfull open minded generous people.also very clever so please my US friends do not jump down my throat for this it is just an observation. My point is probably backed up by all the rascism there,it is complex.
As a t girl I do not condemn these people it is a matter of education all over the world |

Not that Im debating the result of the election but this move isnt backed by the election. Not only did Democrats have more people vote for them but Trump openly embraced the LGBT movement. To say this is a majority opinion is compeletely inaccurate.
Only 31% of US voters thought that allowing transgender people was bad for the military. 61% said it would make no difference or improve things. |

Pentagon spends on erectile dysfunction medication annually about $84m according to the Military Times newspaper. In contrast to gender transition-related health care costs for transgender personnel would increase the military's active duty health budget by $8.4m per year at the most. |

It happened because a funding bill was being held up by an argument between Republicans on whether to fund GRS for soldiers or not. They asked Trump to weigh in so he just announced all TG people were banned.

The ban on TG people in an active military actually makes a lot of sense if people take off the Trump hating specs, the ban had already been in place before obama he lifted it for certain areas of the military,if he was so sure that people going through transition would be capable of frontline duty then surely he would have lifted the ban for ALL aspects of military life but he didn't so therefore he also saw the problem with a person in transition serving in a war zone for example where medical assistance for the transition and the drugs required for transitioning would not be available.Trump just reintroduced a previous ban that people had pretty much accepted before. Now while most people would not see TG as being a mental illness it is still officially recognised as such by the american military and as such TG people would be automatically disqualified from service.People must also realise that there are a rft of other things that disqualify people from the US military such as poor dental hygiene and flat feet yet the left do not come out screaming from the rooftops about these exclusions do they? and before anybody accuses me og being anti TG I am 100% behind a persons right to choose the body they wish to occupy and the mindspace they wish to acquire and if they wish to identify as different to their birth self then fair play to them. |

But is it not the case that ~300 trans people announced they were trans when obama made his announcement? Does that not prove trans people can do the job perfectly well? "
of those 300 how many were transitioning? I would assume either 0 or very few,the actual transition requires a lot of surgery a lot of meds and a lot of after care would this be available on the front line? No it wouldn't and people who have had large surgeries as transitioning people would require are automatically excluded from the US armed forces. So again this doesn't prove your argument .

Obviously there are jobs that TG people could do very well but that is not the crux of the argument,if a group wishes inclusion then they must be fully capable for all aspects of military life surely no? if by the very nature of transitioning a group is excluded from the active part of an armed force then surely that is not fair on the rest who must be ready for frontline action at a moments notice |

I wasn't making an arguement, i was asking a question. If the military doesn't want the healthcare cost of supporting a transition i find that a semi-valid arguement, other than it's pure discrimination. But if someone has already transitioned then what would be the objection? |

I'd get that too, but what's stopping them doing a frontline job once the transition is complete? |

people that have already transitioned have had major surgery which is one of the exclusion points of joining the US military |

Ah yes, so much good, so much winning...
Close ties to Russian mobsters going back to the 90's where he has been financing building his property empire through money laundering not just for the Russian mob and the russian oligarchs who stole much of the former Soviet Unions wealth when it collapsed but also for any other tin pot banana republic dictator who was willing to give Trump a cut (and before you say I am wrong his casinos have been convicted of knowingly money laundering for years).
Yep...
You're absolutely correct the man is a much maligned saint, the US and West is lucky to have such a honest, loyal and principled man to lead the free world. |

Sorry to burst your bubble but people dislike Trump for very well founded reasons. Theyre not being brainwashed at all.
I would be interested to see what you consider his positive acheivements are though.
Hes anti environment. He's anti net neutrality. He supports throwing over 20 million people off of healthcare. Hes pro Putin. He's anti immigrant. Hes anti women. He openly admits going in to the changing rooms of teenage girls and boasts about it. Fired the FBI director for investigating him. Encouraged Russia to hack his political enemies. Shared sensitive classified information, that possibly put Israeli intelligence in danger, with Russia. Praised a mass murderer in the Phillipines. Knowingly appointed an agent of the brutal Turkish government to his security team. Claimed to ban lobbyists from working in his government and then banned the government agency from enforcing this and handed out exceptions to anyone who wanted them. Threatened to break up the 9th circuit appeals court because he didnt like their rulings.
Had the state departments website advertise his golf resort. Had his daughter meet with the Chinese leader and went back on his previous claim of the Chinese being currency manipulators on the same day Ivanka was granted 3 very lucrativr trademarka by the Chinese government. Made up claims that Obama had conducted illegal surveillance on him during the election. Claimed the British government had been spying on him without any basis. Wanted to cut funding to Meals on Wheels and and the after school program Head Start. Declared the court system wqs a threat to national security and the free press as enemies.
And thats not to mention hos contentious travel ban or the fact hes 6 months in and passed no important legislation yet despite the fact his party runs all branches of government. |

"Therefore it's a fair assumption these views are held by a majority of people. I'd say the same goes in the UK. Tolerance, inclusivity and political correctness has had it's day now. Things have changed"

"A broken clock is right twice a day, and to be honest I think Trump may be right this time.
And if you dont believe me please read this Independent article before telling me I am a dinosaur and the military have changed since I served.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/man-stab-woman-119-times-transgender-told-date-mississippi-hotel-room-dwayne-hickerson-dee-whigham-a7860591.html "
I get that serving in the military requires you to some extent to give up your personal political judgments. And being openly LGBT requires you to question what is "normal", and, as you said, shades of grey thinking. But I think on the other hand, you're stereotyping LGBT people as "touchy feely" and "free thinking". Neither of which is necessarily the case.
There is something which I'm interested to know more about, which you've touched on here, the role of gender segregation and enforced celibacy (which the presence of LGBT people, by definition, is going to fuck up) plays in training people for combat. Sounds like a recipe for r*pe being used as a weapon of war, TBH.
As for your link, it does seem a bit tenuous. Civs do that kinda thing a fair bit, it seems really speculative to say that his military training had anything to do with it. |

I mean, I'd think it's much less of a leap of faith, for most people, to be comfortable with LGBT people than to think "hey maybe the government doesn't really have the people's best interests at heart"??? |

OK...
Where to start...
I do not think the LGBT community is made up of soft touchy feely people. they are not the problem. In fact if you look back through history the most efficient and feared 'meat grinders' of armies have been made up of gay men and boys or lesbian women.
I have heard the figure of 70% approval (that's great if you believe it [I don't]) within the military for LGBT service. The trouble is the 30%. The problem is when you have men and women living and working together in a closed community that is trained to be aggressive and violent if 3 in 10 are openly hostile to non hertosexuals then that 70% figure has to be questioned. Now considering that at any time anyone who is openly part of the LGBT community within the armed forces may need someone who is openly (or worse a hidden) homophobe is forced to live and serve with someone who is LGBT I see potential discipline problems that will undoubtedly lead to avoidable incidents.
Gender segregation does not work where you have men and women on the same camp, segregating LGBT's from hetros would only make them more of a target. and having LGBT only units would cause the same problems as there were with the coloured only units of WW2.
I feel bad about this as sexuality should not be a bar to service, but sometimes harmony of the group must come before the rights of the individual. I truly hope I am an out of date old codger on this issue, but I fear I am not.
As for the comment about civi's do these things too. Yes they do but members of the LGBT community are not forced to work, eat, sleep and if required fight along side homophobic civi's.
I hope I have answered your questions, cleared up your misunderstanding of why I think Trump is right on this occasion. |

If we can make it work in the UK, then they can make it work in the US. The Commandant of the Coast Guard, which is part of the military in the US, has come out in support of his trans personnel.
Has it been noted that Trump's announcement was on the anniversary of the end of segregation in the US military? |

Strategic rationale aside, this was at least partly motivated by trying to whip up fear of trans people.
Who's the first trans person who's served in the US military that springs to mind?
I only know of one...Chelsea Manning. So that can be played upon. A nod to the transphobic alt-right. The language of his announcement. Talking about a "burden". Inciting hatred usually plays on economic fears, and certain groups of people are perceived, rightly or wrongly as being in receipt of a greater share of assistance from the state. It helped anti-immigrant rhetoric to become popular.
IDK how much red tape there is over there, but here when you're trying to get hormones (which isn't commiting to further treatment), they spend so much time seemingly protecting us from a bad decision we might have made. So some of that could be cut out, IMO. |

If you replace every instance of LGBT with "black" and every instance of homophobe with "racist" in the quoted paragraph, I think you'll see the problem
Well meaning as this argument may be - it is still wrong. |
