The clock has struck midnight and it is now 23rd June, exactly one year on from the historic and brilliant decision by the British public to Leave the EU. Happy Anniversary to our Independence Day.

I'd leave the champagne on ice a little longer if I were you. Seems like BREXIT isn't going to your sort of BREXIT after all.

The champagne will be popping on Friday night 23rd June 2017, and every 23rd of June going ahead for years to come. This is a great date in our history and I'll certainly be celebrating it every year from now on.

It's funny, not even a mention of this glorious anniversary of yours Centaur on the front pages of your beloved Sun and Daily Mail.

I'm pretty sure this time last year they were saying how wonderful it was and how 23rd of June should be a holiday etc etc.

I was expecting it to be emblazoned on the front page of the Sun this morning and a free Union Jack flag for every reader. But absolutely no mention at all as far as I can see.

Public holiday is for clowns, does that make Jeremy Corbyn 4x a clown then seeing as he had 4 extra public holidays in his Labour manifesto.

I thought you said on here before that you read the Sun for a balanced view of current events to see how the opposite side see things from a different perspective to yourself. Frankly I think you're full of shit because the first anniversary of the EU referendum is mentioned on page 2 of The Sun today and a full page spead about the first anniversary of Brexit is also on page 10 with a large picture of an anniversary cake and an article written by high profile Brexiteer Daniel Hannan.

What, actually go out and buy it? Hahahahahaha. No. I just read through it online. There is no mention as far as I can see of it on the home page of their website. I scrolled down as far as an article about people outraged that Poundland had started selling goods that cost more than a pound and something about love island. Didn't go down any further.

But as it is such a momentus anniversary I'd expect it

To be blazoned all over the front page. Not relegated to page 10. Clearly Murdoch does not think it warrants much attention as right now. Even he sees that trying to draw attention to it and remind people of this 'independence day' or whatever it was billed as last year would just look stupid given what a clusterfuck it is.

So yes, I do read The Sun to see what other people are reading and thinking and clearly they no longer see today as some monuments victory to be celebrated, but rather some slightly embarrassing event a year ago that they hide on page 10.

Bitter? No. I find it quite funny watching how far people had stick their head in the sand. I'm annoyed that people have been hoodwinked into agreeing to this mess. But as they saying goes "never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers".

The real problem with "independence" is that, in order to feel you've become truly independent from something you first have to feel and believe that you we're fully dependent on it in the first place.

As I've never believed that Britain was actually dependent on the EU, any more than the US is dependent on NAFTA, I fail to see how we can in anyway now be more independent from it than we were before. All we're doing is negotiating away our influence over what happens in Europe and, indirectly the world, while still having to pretty much do all the same things we'd have to do any how. It's a very funny form of independence when you actually end up with less control over your own destiny than you had before you started.

Agreed. I really think this idea of being 'ruled by Brussels' comes from deep rooted insecurity and inferiority.

I recall a Tory MP talking about how he felt 'humiliated' by having a red EU passport instead of a blue British one. I can't even imagine the mindset of letting a passport humiliate you.

Indeed. I really wonder how some people make it through the day with such paranoia. Not to mention the fact that it was based on lies anyway. We can change our passport colour if we want to. We don't have to leave the EU to do that.

I hate saying this, Mr Suit but at 50yo and given the rate the government is going, you'll be dead and gone before the foundations are down. Sadly, so will I.

In the meantime, you and centaur can prepare to spend the rest of your life regretting your decision as the country becomes poorer and looses influence around the world.

It's written into the EU treaty that the article 50 process only lasts 2 years. The deadline is March 2019.

Maybe you should take time to read Daniel Hannan's article on the first anniversary of Brexit which I mentioned earlier. In it he talks about a long list of lies that the Remain campaign peddled, people like you seem to have forgotten all about that. The Remain campaign told plenty of lies so you can get off your high horse about it seeing as the remain campaign was just as guilty if not more guilty of blatant lies, falsehoods and mistruths.

It was triggered in March 2017 so come March 2019 we are out. And yes for the record No Deal is better than a bad deal in my opinion.

OK, cool, so you are happy with a transitional period at the end of two years then in which we are still members of the customs union and paying a fee to be a part of the single market etc? I mean, that is what that plan from Vote Leave suggested that I posted last week. As that is the only thing resembling a plan that has been published (despite it having no resemblance to whatever the current government decide to do). I think that many leavers would say that that would not mean we had 'left' yet.

OK, put it another way.... at what point do you think we will have £350M a week spare for the NHS? At what point do you think immigration will be down to the 'tens of thousands'? That was what was promised right? I mean, after we have paid back all the costs of Brexit (which will take decades obviously).

As for 'no deal is better than a bad deal'. Does that mean that Davis has actually costed up what 'no deal' actually means financially? Last he was interviewed by the select committee he admitted that he hadn't bothered yet.

"One year on from the referendum and my my look how far we've got..... one year, 365 fucking days...

Its going to be fucking decades before we leave going by the blistering pace our government shown so far. oh and this i think could be a good bloody indication on the spead of trade negotiating we can look forward to as well.

Happy fucking anniversary we're gonna have a lot more before we get bloody anywhere Rome wasn't built in a day it's a Start

I m not interested in World influence it leads to War I want peace and to concentrate on making things better for people

Maybe we should get some Polish builders in to make a start?"

Nothing wrong with Polish builders if we haven't got enough of our own or can't find enough to train !

But do that option first

It's written into the EU treaty that the article 50 process only lasts 2 years. The deadline is March 2019.

Hahahahahahahahahah. You are the joke that just keeps giving. He said "before we get bloody anywhere". The whole point of his comment was that based on the speed of this government and it's knack for self-harm, we really aren't going to be anywhere further forward in the next 18 months. But remember, "No deal, is better than a bad deal".

is that the only bit of eu treaty that's clear to you? Or is all eu laws and regulations just as clear ?

Why do you think that the NHS is full of immigrant workers and our building sites are full of foreign tradesmen?

Put it another way, when you left school if you were forced to be an electrician or a nurse and you didn't want to do it - do you think that you would be any good? How long would you last?

It is such a simplistic sound byte to say - train people up - because if people wanted to do those jobs, they would have been trained up already. What you going to do out a gun to their heads and make them an offer they can't refuse?

Indeed my understanding is that you want English isolationism. Possibly DNA tests to make sure there are no impurities and definitely no Scottish, Welsh or Irish benevolence. Build walls, enforcement of English culture, enforced Christian worship.

A guy who owns/runs a fruit picking business and employs 2,500 staff, all (most?) of which are foreign seasonal workers is saying he now regrets voting to leave. Apparently they've had only 1 British applicant in the last few years and they only lasted a day at work. Now, you could make a case to say that whatever he is offering is not attractive to British workers... but really... how fucking stupid do you need to be to employ 2,500 staff from the EU and think that voting to leave the EU is going to be good for your business. I mean... good grief!

I m not interested in World influence it leads to War I want peace and to concentrate on making things better for people

Maybe we should get some Polish builders in to make a start? Nothing wrong with Polish builders if we haven't got enough of our own or can't find enough to train !

But do that option first

The simple land of fairies and English Tea cakes....

What you going to do out a gun to their heads and make them an offer they can't refuse?

if you interpreted properly I said if thier wasn't enough people to train !

I know, this was a great one today:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-latest-eu-migrant-workers-fruit-farm-harry-hall-hunter-partnership-bbc-radio-4-today-a7802381.html

I mean... good grief!

-Matt

Remind me again how many unemployed there are in the uk, perhaps what people should be asking is why they are too lazy to do these jobs, plenty of people work for minimum wage so please dont say it is because they cant afford to work "

Right, so you missed the point of the post above then about nurses and builders? You going to hold a gun to the heads of brits to become fruit pickers as well?

If there is something that is preventing Brits from being employed, then what is it, and why haven't we fixed it anyway? I mean, it has fuck all to do with Brexit doesn't it. Well, I guess it *will* have something to do with Brexit in that a number of jobs will be moving to Europe as we leave... unless you happen to be a lawyer or international trade negotiator.

-Matt

Centaur.... the point I was making was yes we have 2 years once notice of A50 is given but look how much has happened since the referendum, a whole year and barely nothing has happened.

I'd hazard a guess the vast majority of people have no idea on the amount of shite that needs to be agreed on within that timescale yet here we are 365 days later, with only a weakened government to show for it.

-Matt

He also said, "it's going to be fucking decades before we leave". That is just false, the EU treaty couldn't be clearer that once triggered the article 50 process only lasts 2 years.

-Matt"

David Davis said that there is not much point in doing a costing into no deal because this is unchartered territory we are going into with Brexit. Most of, if not all the predictions and forcasts from so called experts on the economy so far in relation to Brexit have been proved wrong so it's highly likely a prediction or a forecast into the cost of leaving without a deal would also turn out to be wrong.

It's been a year since the vote to leave, it's only been 3 months since article 50 was triggered. A lot has happened in the last year, the government has had to develop and work on a plan for Brexit because the sheer incompetence of Cameron and Osborne only worked on a plan for Remain. There has also been a lengthy court case to contend with at the high Court and then the appeal at the Supreme court. Once that was dealt with then the article 50 vote had to get through parliament which the house of Lords were dragging their feet on. Article 50 was triggered in March and we are where we are now. We are due to leave in March 2019 as things currently stand.

Most of, if not all the predictions and forcasts from so called experts on the economy so far in relation to Brexit have been proved wrong so it's highly likely a prediction or a forecast into the cost of leaving without a deal would also turn out to be wrong. "

The predictions were made about a scenario that didn't actually happen. Two key factors were different from what the predictions were actually made on. The first was that the predictions were made on the bases that Article 50 would be triggered on the 24 Jun 2016 and the second was that a fall in GDB was not taken into consideration.

The delay in triggering article 50 meant that there was no hurry to make any adverse decision until the actual BREXIT path was more clearly known. However since the policy of a hard economically suicidal BREXIT became clear in Q1 of this year (Lancaster House et all) the economy has dropped from being the fastest growing economy in the EU this time last year to the slowest growing this year; even Italy, Spain and Greece have grown faster.

The massive devaluation of GDP (which was not calculated in to the predictions) has not only increased exports, reported profits and tourism it has also lead to a general expectation that high inflation is on its way. This has been one of the primary reasons why there has been a massive consumer spending spree post-BREXIT. I've actually brought two new TVs, a laptop and desktop PC since June 23 on the bases that, while I was going to leave it for another year or so originally, I may as well buy it now before it goes up in price. However as price rises start to come through, resultant of the fall in value of GDP, and wages fail to keep up, that consumer spree is pretty rabidly ending.

It's never a good idea to believe the exact predictions of anyone. There are just too many possible variables to be able to say for total certainty exactly when something is definitely going happen. However you should take into considerations the bases on what those predictions were actually made on; which were that if you make it harder to trade with your closest, richest and biggest markets your going to end up doing less trade with them, which means eventually you're going to end up poorer. That was true last year and it's still true now, and we're only just starting to see the tip of the iceberg as to just how true it really is.

What is even more disgusting is the BREXITers' British worker slagging immigration policy which basically says

"we're going to stop cheap, low paid, unskilled workers coming to Britain from the EU because, lets face it, we've got loads of unskilled Brits here already who should be able to do it just a cheaply and maybe even for less pay; but we are going to allow in expensive, highly paid, skilled worker because, let's face it, British people are either too stupid or too lazy to be trained to do those jobs themselves"

If that isn't a massive insult to the British people I really don't know what is.

And you voted for that!!

"

He also said, "it's going to be fucking decades before we leave". That is just false, the EU treaty couldn't be clearer that once triggered the article 50 process only lasts 2 years.

Centaur.... the point I was making was yes we have 2 years once notice of A50 is given but look how much has happened since the referendum, a whole year and barely nothing has happened.

I'd hazard a guess the vast majority of people have no idea on the amount of shite that needs to be agreed on within that timescale yet here we are 365 days later, with only a weakened government to show for it."

This is where the "no deal is better than a bad deal" line came from.

May & Co probably know that they are fucked and so set the expectation long ago that if they couldn't be bothered to make an effort - they would walk away and blame the EU for offering "a bad deal."

Well you almost definitely will if there is a hard BREXIT and Nissan decide to move their car production to somewhere else within the New EU because of the restrictions in trade that would result.

Maybe the people in the North East wouldn't get so screwed over it they actually looked at the possible consequences of their votes before putting their Xs on the ballot paper.

If Nissans leaves because of BREXIT the people of the North East have no one else to blame except themselves, they voted for it.

Actually Liverpool and Merseyside are the fastest growing region in the North West. And bloody Corbyn will be of no more help than crooked Derek Hatton was in the 80s. Labour's Militant's socialism almost destroyed Liverpool in the 80s. Corbyn's Momentum Labour would do the same now.

I know, this was a great one today:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-latest-eu-migrant-workers-fruit-farm-harry-hall-hunter-partnership-bbc-radio-4-today-a7802381.html

I mean... good grief!

-Matt

Remind me again how many unemployed there are in the uk, perhaps what people should be asking is why they are too lazy to do these jobs, plenty of people work for minimum wage so please dont say it is because they cant afford to work

Well if they had to work or get no dole then perhaps they would get top like it, FFS why do all the eastern europeans come here to do this "hard" graft ? It aint because they all want to leave their families behind and often hot bed in small houses often doing two jobs, they do it to LIVE and hopefully save a bit to make theirs and their families life better, something the workshy in this country need to learn, of course there are places where there is very little work of any kind but in the area where we both live there is loads of work, some skilled some unskilled, if you can be bothered

-Matt"

With regard to Nissan I hope you're right but I wouldn't bank on it.

As for other votes. Large parts of the North East, like large parts of Merseyside, are so solidly Labour that they could put a dog up with a red flag tied to its tail and it would probably still get elected. The same used to be true for large parts of Scotland to. This has lead to a pretty complacent attitude to the electorate by a large part of the Labour party. If there is any one good thing that might come out of the rise of the SNP and UKIP it might be that Labour stops taking the voters in those areas for granted.

That's not true. In fact the complete opposite is true. What free movement allows is the freedom to travel within the free movement area (EU/EEA/EFTA) and the right to reside in the free movement area if you can show that you have the means to support yourself and your dependents. If we leave the EU and don't have an agreement in place then you won't be able to even travel freely within Europe, never mind live there. We will be subject to the same immigration, customs and residency controls that any other country is subject to; in some cases that could even mean visas. That's what 'no agreement' and 'no deal' means.

A year after Brexit:

From fastest growing economy in the G7 to slowest.

From fastest growing economy in the EU to the slowest and just barely above recession.

Inflation has increased to its highest level in years, from 0.5% to 2.9%.

From a strong stable government to a government that still cant agree on a deal to form a majority.

Thousands of jobs leaving the UK. 100,000 jobs lost with the loss of euro clearing alone. 250,000 other jobs in the financial center. 200,000 in the construction industry.

1 in 3 manufacturing companies plan to ship at least some of their operations to the EU.

Business investment to be reduced by 25% across the country by 2019.

Hate crimes have increased.

Child poverty has increased.

The pound has plummeted in value.

Value of real wages is down.

Retail sales have fallen and look to fall further during the year.

Yet another year gone by and brexiters still can't answer questions like how will it improve the economy by employing the brits that are stupid and lazy, rather than a foreigner who is highly skilled and hard working?

Another year of instability.

Another year where the Tories still cant figure out what they want.

Brexit has cost the UK treasury MORE per week than their net payments to the EU.

Excellent work all round.

ONS figures show that between March 2017 and February 2018 UK exports increased from £594 billion to £627 billion, which is a rise of 10.4%. Employment at an all time record high in the UK and unemployment at a 40 year low. Enjoying the World cup today and celebrating the Brexit vote anniversary, life is great.

All 50 of them. JRM, Fox, Gove and BoJo with his "Fuck Business" banner, together with another 46 who parked their Jags around the corner and went for a stroll in the sun.

On the other hand, 100.000 people, who travelled to London from all over the UK, demonstrated (yes, a pun too!) the increasing shift in public opinion

When we see the 17.4 million who did vote to leave out on the march you could say there is a shift in public opinion, but I don't think that's going to happen!

Central

It's interesting to see who shows themselves as attractive people here. It's not a shag, kiss or swift drink section of the forum but the attractiveness of personalities - or not - shows clearly.

Someone astute, caring, wise and respectful can walk tall. It's rather pitiful for others.

Williamson is threatening to break may unless his department gets some cash from the magic money tree.

I wish someone in the DWP would leak the scale of, or threaten them with the issue of zero our or 'flexible hour' contracts in this country.

So many people are classed as 'employed' or 'in work' yet are reliant on benifits as they get a pathetic 24 hours or less per week like my younger cousins.

To say employment is at a record high, without stating how many people could actually sustain themselves without benifits other than a council house is a pathetic metric to measure employability of a nation by.
