Just had a news update and we are looking at a hung parliament.
Labour no doubt used the free tuition to get the student votes as they were too young to see the financial ruin that the last labour government left us in.
They should all be hung for the atrocities that they have carried out in the so called name of democracy. |

Nothing to do with the global financial crisis. Obama was cursing the last labour government when he introduced his stimulus package. Greece have pictures of the last labour government on their dart boards.  |

I think people should give young voters more credit. It's their future and they should, and did come out and vote. Free tuition for students won't work as a tactic for students because they're already paying extortionate fees with rising interest rates - rates that they cannot fix, unlike our mortgages and loans etc. Politicians are liars and mislead. If they spent more time debating issues and less time mud slinging then perhaps people would be better informed about politics. The only people responsible for the terrible state of this country are politicians. They feather their nests for 4 years and have no long term plan. Education is a classic example. |

I think people should give young voters more credit. It's their future and they should, and did come out and vote. Free tuition for students won't work as a tactic for students because they're already paying extortionate fees with rising interest rates - rates that they cannot fix, unlike our mortgages and loans etc. Politicians are liars and mislead. If they spent more time debating issues and less time mud slinging then perhaps people would be better informed about politics. I think there is only one party engaging with young people. Social media has gone mad with young people discussing/debating politics and I'm sure some of them are heated but at least it's being discussed. It's important that they are involved and take an interest. If the young have come out to vote then they should be congratulated I think  |

We are no more out of debt now than we were when th tories got in and promised austerity cuts blah blah. We got the cuts, the bank balance isn't seeing the benefit though? |

free tuition i dont think is doable - not for a long time anyway - think it should go back to 3 grand not 9 - and its only repayable as it is now - |

I see big problems in the future. It's already starting. A society of over educated young adults. Sad when they end up doing jobs where a lesser qualification would have sufficed. Then there is the debt. I believe in accessible education where it makes sense. I don't agree with encouraging our young people to burden themselves with doubt and give false hope of degree worthy jobs that aren't there.  |

We can afford to give tax cuts to the very richest and still want to cut the teachers, the police, the fire service and the Nhs to the absolute bone ..
Personally i am glad that this election has re engaged the younger voters because any generation that is apathetic with politics and how it affects them and will affect their kids in the future is not good.. |

Free tuition. When i went to uni i got paid a grant! Of course its doable to invest in young people, ive paid it back many times in tax! And wasnt "national insurance" supposed to be like an insurance policy and not just an extra tax? |

I was amazed by the amount of press attention Labour got. I couldn't read the Guardian or Indy for seeing a diatribe of articles, headlines, famous actors or 'brand new data' supporting him or his policies.
Worst result that could have happened. It'll result in media hacks and what should have been a Labour leader that should have resigned himself last year stagnating a National mandate.
Shame about Clegg losing his seat. Amazing what a mass of false promises can do. |

Why should Corbyn have resigned? He is still in post because his colleagues want him there and people have come out and voted for him so like him or loath him he must be appealing to somebody. |

The Tories relied to much on newspapers while labour went to social media. It's good to see young voters getting out to vote their voice is needed more than ever. They have to build their adulthood around what happens now. I'm no corbyn fan but he campaigned with passion while May just seemed to nod her head and say nothing of meaning. She deserves this outcome through her vanity and arrogant attitude. |

I said he should have resigned. He still doesn't have a cabinet I think. If he would have won, he would have been rummaging around for people to be in it!
172 MP's split from him last year. His policies were so far Left he should have started a new party but didn't - so shouldn't be in the position he is in now if he did. Several votes of no confidence and calls for his resignation, anti semitism rows ill dealt with too. Only the Unions wanted him in last year (and that was debatable), not the general public. He is a campaigner, a protester - he knows how to rally.
He appealed to a large student vote I think - See Clegg in Sheffield Hallam.
Anyway, it's still a very uneasy outcome. |

The reason for the tuition fee ploy was that the youngsters have no idea of the total shambles and financial ruin that the last Labour government left us in.
It was just a strategic gamble that paid off.
After a rethink you would most likely find that they dropped it once in power. |

For me the Tory's dreadfully conceived plan to fund social care for the elderly and labours wistfully populist pledge to axe student tuition fees influenced much of the voting by young and old alike....

Had the same number of the young taken part in the referendum last year the result may have been different..
Was this their having a say in that as well as other issues?

I think most do want to work. But finding a job that matches their qualifications is something else.
We need more vocational education. I'm also apprentice trained. |

Exactly don't forget the ones that go for a year or 2 then do a gap year come back from travelling then decide after all that uni isn't for them
Then cry wolf when they get a job that pays and see their fees automatically taken from their salary so they leave that job or reduce their hours

The people who called the election should be hung perhaps instead, when we have a legal framework for governments of 5 years.
The shrill con leader only appeared in public with invited audiences, usually local conservative party members, apart from one time when a woman challenged her to live on £1000 per month as a disabled person. 'Leading' for the few.

motivation maybe is part of it - both my kids had a goal and both achieved - one is english teacher after an english degree and the other works abroad after taking a modern language degree - both happy to pay back the loans they gained over the years they spent at uni - we chatted at length as they were worried about the debt - when they saw it was only ever going to be taken back once they earned the money and as its taken at source they were neer going to miss it either - so proud of them |

If you lost your partner how would you feel about cuts in widows parent allowance ? All these things affect our children or in my case grandchildren. |

We are in the poorest funded council for education in the UK.
We both cane from poor backgrounds, free uniform, meals etc so know that we would not want that stigma for our son.
Putting obstacles in their way such as constantly moving the goal posts has more impact than any cuts do!
P.S. we would never pay to put our child through schooling. |

It was victory for democracy and the FPTP system. I have no doubt it reflects the closeness of the 48 to 52% referendum result. We have got the government we deserve precisely. It's a weak minority government and so be it. The Brexit negotiations can begin in earnest now with a weak, vascillating government with no mandate and having to take whatever scraps are thrown to it LOL.
Oh well to be perverse the pound will probably rise now that it's going to be an extremely soft Brexit |

Free tuition fees worked....when under 10% of population went to university.
Labour introduced tuition fees with a target of increasing university participation to 50%.
That didn't quite get that high....but totally unaffordable to fund that.
I've got three.....all went to uni (one now a doctor, one MSc in chemistry...job lined up with centrica).
They will pay the fees back themselves from the very nice jobs it has enabled them to get. |

Did you hear Kensington counters were sent home as they were too tired counting They are to reveal in the afternoon.

This was an election about people wanting something for nothing. More benefits, free tuition, higher taxes on the rich, and those who work would once again be second class citizens.
The only labour policy decent was around the NHS and even that looked shakey when you drilled down into the financing of it all. Labour ruined the country between 1997 and 2010.
Now we find ourselves in a perilous position where no stable government can be formed, brexit deals will be weakened, and everyone worse off.

Free tuition for students won't work as a tactic for students because they're already paying extortionate fees with rising interest rates - rates that they cannot fix, unlike our mortgages and loans etc. Politicians are liars and mislead. If they spent more time debating issues and less time mud slinging then perhaps people would be better informed about politics. The only people responsible for the terrible state of this country are politicians. They feather their nests for 4 years and have no long term plan. Education is a classic example.

I think there is only one party engaging with young people. Social media has gone mad with young people discussing/debating politics and I'm sure some of them are heated but at least it's being discussed. It's important that they are involved and take an interest. If the young have come out to vote then they should be congratulated I think

I said he should have resigned. He still doesn't have a cabinet I think. If he would have won, he would have been rummaging around for people to be in it!
172 MP's split from him last year. His policies were so far Left he should have started a new party but didn't - so shouldn't be in the position he is in now if he did. Several votes of no confidence and calls for his resignation, anti semitism rows ill dealt with too. Only the Unions wanted him in last year (and that was debatable), not the general public. He is a campaigner, a protester - he knows how to rally.
He appealed to a large student vote I think - See Clegg in Sheffield Hallam.
Anyway, it's still a very uneasy outcome. "

I believe that this is result that all the politicians wanted; but the last thing that the people needed.
No political party wants the poisoned chalice that is Brexit, no one wants the political fallout for years to come from the ramifications of whatever crumbs the EU will look to throw our way. Every major party realises that it will be 10 years in the political wilderness if Bexit goes poorly. For the next four years, there is no one party to blame.
IMO best course of action would be to spend three months doing further campaigning and call an October election. You need one party at the helm through these next four years, not a 'chaos of malcontents' ready to shit the bed at a moments notice.

Totally agree - degrees should cost something just not as much as they do now.
Free university would have led to many more youngsters going off to party for three years to get a qualification in a subject that has no bearing on jobs available or skill sets needed.
I commented to one of my daughters friends that the next generation would end up paying the cost of al the free degrees through future taxes - she looked at me shocked and said "no they are going to be free"

That depends, if tax has already been paid on the inheritance when it was earned why should it be taxed again?
If it's never been taxed then tax away. However financial inheritance will deem tax on Interest. Selling items that you inherit will trigger capital gains so it's still covered. |

Wonder if tory voters are happy about the NHS being dismantled .....wheelchair clinics, hearing aid clinics, mental illness often done by private companies and increasing vacancies in nurse and doctor posts.
Are tory voters proud of how many food banks we now have ?
Are tory voters proud of all the disabled people having their benefits stopped, motability cars having to be returned and people having to fight for their benefits ?
Are tory voters happy about the fact that all parents are expected to pay for school books as well as kids meals....when some children's only hot meal is what they get at school.

I think the hole I worked hard my hole life to get where I am thing is narow minded and selfish. I to have worked hard my hole life an now am in a position where I am doing well for myself. I have been lucky and had some chances others my not have had. Now that I am where I am I wouldn't mind paying more tax. As long as that money went to thoes that need it. |

free tuition i dont think is doable - not for a long time anyway - think it should go back to 3 grand not 9 - and its only repayable as it is now -
I see big problems in the future. It's already starting. A society of over educated young adults. Sad when they end up doing jobs where a lesser qualification would have sufficed. Then there is the debt. I believe in accessible education where it makes sense. I don't agree with encouraging our young people to burden themselves with doubt and give false hope of degree worthy jobs that aren't there. "

When you went to university only about 10% of the population went on to university so paying grants was very doable. We now have 45% with a target of 50% so grants, or even no tuition fees, is not really doable or viable. |

I agree. Good to see the young engaged, even if from my point of view they've fallen for a populist demagogue. I think the Tory failure has been that, by backing BREXIT, they can no longer claim to be the party of economic pragmatism and competence. If both parties are putting forward economically disastrous policies then why not vote for the party that's offering them something for nothing? That's what the young have done. |

Not really that much of a surprise really. The Ulster Unionists used to take the Tory whip up until 1972 and the DUP fits quite nicely with the flag waving, plastic patriots of the "Conservative and Unionist" party.
That being said, unlike Sinn Fein, the DUP has never officially backed terrorism. |

Not really that much of a surprise really. The Ulster Unionists used to take the Tory whip up until 1972 and the DUP fits quite nicely with the flag waving, plastic patriots of the "Conservative and Unionist" party.

Interesting times. With parties so polarised, maybe an coalition government may be better for the country than one who intends to make the really rich richer and is already selling off large parts of the NHS, or another with ideas causing worry in the money markets, being in charge! Time will tell but change in government is usually good and we shouldn't be afraid of it. |
