It appears that Jeremy Corbin will be Labour's person on the Labour podium tonight.

good..... that is going to put a shed load of pressure on both teresa may for not showing up.... and amber rudd who is going to have to do a boat load of defending on behalf of teresa tonight....

the question is how are voters going to view the fact may is ducking debates!

you know what the plan is going to be tonight..... Rudd and Nutall are going to want to keep it on Brexit

Robertson, Corbyn, Wood and Lucas are going to keep it everything else... Education, Social care, NHS, Policing.......

the interesting one is going to be Farron, as the lib dems has set themselves up as the party of the "48%" but talking about brexit plays into other peoples hands....

Either JC is supremely confident here, or Labour daren't risk putting up one of their "loose" cannons.

Goes up against BGT, so viewing figures may be reduced.

The sheer hypocrisy of her slagging Corbyn over immigration and her record of dismal failure when home sec just smacks of arrogance and appealing to those not able to think..

I think it is the former.... the more he can get in front of the camera and actually show he is "likable"... the more it negates the right wing newspapers....

and in a sense with angus robertson, caroline lucas and leanne wood next to him, he is not going to get them going after him nearly as much as they will all go after amber rudd...

in a sense... the snp are going to go after the torys as they are there main threat.... but none on the "rainbow" are going after corbyn because the better he looks the worse it will be for may.....

Agreed but historically they will gang up on UKIP, and it will turn into another 6 against 1 bunfight!

Rudd will go after personalities and not focus on policies too much. She is safe under pressure and a smart cookie. What her advisors are telling her this afternoon will be very interesting indeed. Previously, the best weapon that the Conservative's had was Jeremy Corbin but that dynamic may have changed now.

ukip isn't a threat and nutall isn't farage....

if they can make it look like "5 on 2" and get the cons and ukip to agree on policy... that may well be as damaging....

also it will be interesting to see in what order the topics are discussed... i felt like may was in trouble on monday but got bailed out when the brexit topic came up last.....

if that questioning had been the other way round... i think we would be asking a whole lot more questions about May....

What I find amusing is that Corbyn is claiming that tge PM's refusal to take part is a sugn of weakness, whereas he had previously refused to take part unless she was there, I would argue that it is in fact he who is weak, bowing to pressure etc, whereas she has remained firm on the position and refused to bow to external pressure - a sign of strength.

and i always thought that his decision not to turn up for the first debate was a bad one.... but i wouldn't be spinning her decision in not doing any head to heads to be a sign of strength....

if she was a BoJo or a Ruth Davidson, lynton crosby and CCHQ would have her doing as many debates as possible.... the fact is they are trying to cover up her liabilities...

the trouble for may is that people were not buying that excuse before... and after monday they are not buying it even less!

whether you like him or not... Corbyn has gotten better and better at doing these... primarily because he has has 2 leadership contests and 2 loads of leader hustings to go thru!

all corbyn has to do tonight is highlight that amber rudd is just one of the torys flying monkeys and not the organ grinder, who doesn't have enough conviction in her own ability to accept his challange of a head to head debate .... she might well do yet another u-turn on this before the day is done

Or one could equally argue that May came across mostly as out of her depth apart from brexit when quizzed by normal people and has been told not a good idea to do more..

Corbyn fucked up on R4 but he's showing he's not going to run away..

Which again highlights just how much political oxygen brexit is sucking up. Imagine if we could have gone ahead sorting out all the problems with this country without having to deal with all the crap of an extra election and all the political and civil service manpower needed for brexit. Let alone all the damage and animosity it has already caused.

A great article in the FT yesterday about the extent of what needs negotiating:

https://www.ft.com/content/f1435a8e-372b-11e7-bce4-9023f8c0fd2e

759 treaties with 168 countries need re-negotiating... and we have 667 days to get it done. And if you buy May's "I'm ready Corbyn isn't" claptrap then you clearly don't understand how the civil service works.

Ah the FT, otherwise known as the Daily Remain.

You keep trumpeting Corbyn's horn on various threads though, it's good to see you finally accept Brexit because Corbyn intends to take Britain out of the EU in one form or another.

The surprising thing to me is that the conservatives are putting someone up ?

She'll get hammered , but if they had empty chaired Corbyn would have got it !

But really May hasn't got a foot to stand on here !

She says she's busy meeting people but they are hand picked !

If she isn't careful she could pick up the biggest defeat from victory in history !

If Corbyn changed tac and admitted been pro Brexit , wich I suspect he is , she would be in Pooooo

In Bath today she got asked repeatedly by the media why she wasn't turning up and she gave 4 different answers. I think the only excuse she didn't give was 'I'm washing my hair'.

Kim Jong-May is a similarly opportunistic leader to her Korean equivalent, desperate and failing - Amber Rudd just rudderless - they've continued to megaphone out the same repetitive tripe. There was a law passed to make parliament last for 5 years. The conservatives shouldn't have got around it, so we could judge them on all of their last manifesto promises they'd broken and the European outcome mess they created.

It was a reasonable show tonight

Funny now known Remainers on here saying Amber Rudd is poor on a debating panel, because just 12 short months ago the Remainers were singing her praises and saying how good she is when she stood on a panel for the Remain campaign alongside Nicola Sturgeon.

I thought Amber Rudd came across well and far better than May did the other night.

Jeremy Corbyn came across well to and, if I didn't know better, sounded reasonably convincing.

Tim Farron, while saying a lot that I agreed with and getting some good responses from the audience, still doesn't seem to be cutting through.

Paul Nuttall had one moment when he seemed to capture the crowd but soon descended to his normal divisive, anti immigrant, islamophobic bullshit.

"

You do realise that not everything has some kind of Brexit theme, don't you?"

you have kinda though hit the nail on the head.... the conservatives have to try and keep it on brexit, because at the moment they are on the defensive on actual policy....

you need kinda see what the theme for "the blues" and CCHQ are going to be for the next week tonight...

"the money tree"..... they will try and attack labour on costings whilst convieniently forgetting they have none of their own...

and then it will be the "greatest hits of fear"... the coalition of chaos, immigration, brexit and those nasty europeans all ganging up on us

the more this turns into a policy election, the more it turns in labour's favour....

winners tonight: Corbyn (for showing up)

Caroline Lucas for a really strong showing,

Amber Rudd (her father passed away on monday and she still showed up... which makes may look even worse!) had a thankless task and puts her in good position in any post election party leadership contest if there is one....

Losers:

Teresa May: for the amber rudd reason, and the blistering line that she called the election but couldn't be bothered turning up for the debate

The Conservatives in general: they did get beat up on policy tonight! having the brexit question early didn't help as one that was out the way, it did feel like an hour of being consistantly on the back foot....

Paul Nutall: again.... just not a good debater, this is the end of UKIP!

the other three were in the middle.... angus robertson did well, but when your leader is probably the best TV debater in UK politics at this time, its a high standard to live up to...

Farron did manage to tread a fine line well again, but even though the conservatives have gone further right, and labour a bit further left it feels like there is no middle ground to really exploit!

My full respect to Amber Rudd for continuing so shortly after her dad has died - that's an awful position to have been in - though a decent leader would have forced her to take a break.
