basically the route forward now would be the basically subpeona everything....

give the fbi 72 hrs to voluntarily hand over all the comey memo's..... or subpeona

give the whitehouse 72hrs to voluntarily hand over any trump whitehouse "taped" conversations.... or subpeona

that way we know straight away who was bluffing over what....

the hearing has to be public.... no hiding behind closed sessions

i'd rather it was conducted by the senate rather than the house as the senate is less partisan.. well... save ted cruz!

Too many senior Republicans looking the other way and hoping its just part of the settling in process, looks like when Trump moved in he brought some baggage with him ..

the longer it goes on and the closer it gets to the mid terms then the weaker and more indecisive they will look which may prompt some self preservation back bone growth..

"are you predicting it'll end up as rats on a ship that's going down like a ten dollar whore?"

interesting analogy..

most of the Republicans didn't want him so will shed no tears if he goes before 2020 and suppose they still have Pence..

the phrase 'don't tell the President has a new meaning as of this week'..

I was watching All In with Chris Hayes a few days ago. A guest of his warned that Comey's firing was not the end of the story. He reminded everyone that during the Bush scandal with the torture memos Comey, then working in the Attorney General's office, had taken meticulous notes and written them in memos and emails so that there were contemporaneous writing about questionably illegal conversations and activities.

Then, a few days after that episode, we find out that Comey had recorded, in contemporaneous writings (in the form of memos), possibly illegal requests by the president regarding his investigations into Mike Flynn. Comey has shown in the past that he is very careful with his records - something I would expect of any good lawyer, and even more so someone in his position in the FBI and formerly the DOJ.

Then I looked again at Trump's tweet where he threatened Comey with tapes - "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" The key part being "before he starts leaking to the press." Not only did Trump do things that were leak-worthy, he did them knowing they were wrong and possibly illegal, hence why he thought there would be leaks from Comey at all.

I think that Comey's firing was out of anger by Trump that he didn't have his loyalty. It was timed to coincide with, and overshadow, Sally Yates' testimony regarding the Russia Investigation. But I think it turned out to be taken more seriously than Trump thought it would and it might just be the straw that broke the camel's back. Time will tell...

He keeps trying to overshadow every scandal with something more distracting. Problem is he keeps having to come up with more outrageous things each time to cover the last outrageous thing he did!

John McCain has compared the whole situation with Watergate and more Republicans are saying Comey should testify and are saying publicly that there should be a congressional investigation.

Trumps never going to last 4 years.

I dont think trump understands the difference between the business world and the political world. It's one thing to ask a supplier not to supply a competitor or threaten, bully or cajole someone in business. Very very different to do it in a political context.

he won't get to 2020 because there are mid terms in 2018.....

all the dems would have to do is flip 24 congressional seats... and the house goes to them!!

interesting stat for you... number of republicans currently sitting in congressional seats that went more than 60-40 for clinton in the election... 23!

so with trump making a balls up of everything... plus the republicans trying to repeal the ACA.... i think a lot of moderate republicans may think of bailing on trump a lot sooner....

I honestly don't get why they are even staying with Trump. If they got rid of him they would have Pence, they would be able to move forward with their agenda, and they would be able to say to their constituents that they put their conservative agenda above the ego of one man. I don't get why they are so loyal to a many who is loyal to no one.

They dont want to piss off the Trump voters who are mostly republican. If they lose even a small fraction of those voters they'd get wiped out.

To remove Trump from office Democrats would also need the Senate and they would need massive gains to flip that.

Eh, I still don't get it. Congressional seats have been gerrymandered beyond belief. And they are so local I don't really think they have to defend trump to keep their constituents happy. I personally think they are hurting their position with swing voters by sucking Trump's dick at every opportunity.

Hard core republicans will vote republican regardless. I have a feeling that his current elected supporters will start to waffle as we get closer to the midterms. They might be able to run away from townhall meetings now, but they can't run away from their own elections.

They dont worry about them flipping to the democrats side or even voting libertarian, they worry that disillusioned voters just wont bother voting.

Not all congressional seats are completely gerrymandered, they almost lost a seat in a special election that theyve had for decades (Prices old one). It was just a couple of per cent off going democrat in the first round and still might go in the second.

Trumps both the cause of their losses and the reason they're making some gains. If the Republicans lose that seat in June and the opinion polls stay against Trump we might see some movement.

That's my point, though. The seats that aren't completely gerrymandered are waffling already because of Trump. I don't see where he is helping them - only where he's hurting.

I doubt a political scandal as big as a Trump impeachment would lower voter turn out. If I were less lazy I'd checked whether voter turn out increased or decreased after Nixon's resignation for comparison. But my gut says it would get more people involved, not less. I think the realization that saviour Trump is as corrupt as every other politician, if not more so, is likely to hurt voter turnout more, and people are already figuring that out....

After Nixon resigned the democrats increased their seats in both houses. Two thirds majority in the house and the all important 60 seats in the senate (60 seats being enough to break a filibuster) and then they won the presidential election 2 years later with a little known candidate. It was pretty brutal.

Former FBI director as well. Ot would have been better if it had been a commission because everything would have been out in the open. A special prosecutor will, at the end, be able to close with saying no crimes were committed without anyone funding out the detail.

If hes innocent or guilty people should know before they go vote for him again.

Word is that multiple grand jury subpoenas are being issued to members of Flynn's staff and members of Trumps campaign team this week. If this is true it will be interesting to see how many claim their right to not give self incriminating evidence under the 5th amendment. Of course Flynn has already said that he will, so we now know he is most certainly guilty, it's just a question of will the evidence be found to prove him guilty in a court of law?

plus the fact his lawyers have said that he wants immunity for his testimony......

Maybe, but I bet the US military has regulations restricting contact with officials of hostile foreign powers without express permission from a higher command and I bet Flynn did not have such permission. That to my way of thinking is an automatic trip to Fort Leavenworth, just like the one Mr/Ms Manning got.

"he's taken the fifth"

I'm not surprised. Given what he is being accused of, especially now that it's known he was secretly lobbying for the Turkish government, it's probably best for him if he shuts the fuck up.

Give the FBI investigation time...I have a hunch that he may get a bit of a deal if he has the right information against the right people. Since others have possibly been identified who are currently within the white house, there may be bigger fish to fry than Flynn.

I'm not an expert in 5th Amendment law, but I know a bit about it. I think he is going to have to turn the documents over to not be held in contempt. He may also have to show up to the hearing in order to not be held in contempt. But he could legally show up and answer "I am exercising my 5th Amendment right to remain silent" to every question and they wouldn't be able to make a contempt charge stick.

And that's even if they want to do that. It might be strategically smart to give him immunity if he has information that could get someone even more important in trouble.

I think the government really has to play this smart. It's getting interesting, though.

You know it was Trump's own Attorneys General who established the special prosecutor right? Trump's own people started this investigation

Eh, that's not really news. Except that I think Trump's lawyer must be going out of his mind because his client can't keep his mouth shut.

I'm glad all of this is happening. What happened in the 2016 election is an embarrassment to US democracy. If anything, trump supporters should be even more angry because Russian interference (in the election and in the Trump campaign) called into question an election that trump would probably have won outright.

I think it's sad that they don't want to protect domestic elections from foreign interference and influence. Pathetic, even.

"the story grows yet more pairs of legs"

Indeed. Trump's Campaign manager, Trump's son, and Trump's son in law, and Trump's National Security Advisor all colluded with, or attempted to collude with the Russians. They all have denied this, and they have all been caught lying about it. How many more examples are we going to find?

The dominoes are falling. Donald Trump jr. has now had to admit that he met with Russians after being told in advance the meeting was about intelligence gathered on Clinton from the Kremlin.

Jrs best defence at the moment is that Manafort and Kushner left the campaign to have this meeting without knowing who it was with or what it was about A lie so ridiculous only CandM4U would believe it

And apparently Trump didnt know anything about it. The noose around his neck is getting tighter and it hasnt even been 2 months since the special prosecutor has been appointed. And he hasnt even hired a full team yet and only submitted his budget last week. This is a presidency in freefall. We'll never see a president impeached as fast as this again.

Remember the Trump campaign claims...

Crooked Hilary, "LOCK HER UP"...

Washington is corrupt, "DRAIN THE SWAMP"

Better, cheaper health care for all Americans...

America first baseball caps (made in china)...

And what has he delivered???

The crooks are in the White House!

He is the swamp!

23 million Americans to lose their health insurance if the GOP health bill passed but already millions have seen their premiums rocket and medicaid cut to give billions in tax breaks to billionaires (Donny being one of them).

And then there is America first...

Not really, there is a noticeable loss of American international influence to the point that Angela Merkel has said publicly that Germany can no longer consider the USA to be their friend. And then Donny has Ivanka (the daughter he said he would like to do on TV) sit in for him at a G20 meeting. Of course no one wants to talk to the man because clearly he is an ignoramus without the first clue about any of the issues being discussed, who can't deliver on any promises he makes and being totally frank can't be trusted to be telling the truth about anything when speaking to other world leaders. Of course our Tessy will be there for him because she needs a trade deal from him... Anyone like to predict how that will work out for us in the UK? I'll put my money on worse than his presidency is proving for the American people.

Now please feel free to correct me if you think I am wrong. But the above does not sound like the actions of "the greatest dealmaker in the world".

What it reminds me of are the actions of a tinpot dictator in a banana republic, in fact the Marcos and Ceau?escu families spring straight to mind.

Manafort and Kushner knew about it as they were copied into the email.

They said that meeting was about adoption of Russian babies. Seriously? 3 of the most senior campaign officials in a presidential campaign are taking meetings on adoption? I don't remember that being a campaign priority, does anyone else?

Looks like we are now up to 5 Russians in the room with the junior fart, Kushner and the senior fart's campaign manager. Such an easy thing to forget after all 'mini me' must have at least 4 meetings a day where a Russian state lawyer flies in and is joined by a former Russian counterespionage officer who is an expert in subversion planting false evidence...

2 still to be named...

Wonder if there was a video link to the Kremlin too...

At least we learned one thing with junior the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree.

this one is always on the defensive, be that russia or healthcare or the insane tweeting...

The story that just keeps giving has given some more...

According to the Washington Post DTJr's original statement saying the meeting in Trump tower with the Russian lawyer was quote:

'President Trump personally dictated a statement that was issued after revelations that Donald Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 election. The Washington Post's Philip Rucker and Carol D. Leonnig explain. (Bastien Inzaurralde/The Washington Post)'

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-dictated-sons-misleading-statement-on-meeting-with-russian-lawyer/2017/07/31/04c94f96-73ae-11e7-8f39-eeb7d3a2d304_story.html?utm_term=.40f1e5a5530a

When did this happen?

I was expecting to hear Trump had called it fake news.

Now why was he asking if he could pardon his family? dont they have to be convicted before he can pardon them? Can he pardon himself before he is even indited? Surely if he is indited he will already have been removed from office and therefore can't pardon himself?

Will Trump be the first US president charged with Treason?

Looks like Mueller has convened a separate grand jury to investigate the Trump campaign, separate from Flynn. Shits getting serious and Trump is rallying his base.

I have a bad feeling about this. I have a feeling people in high places are going to be under fire and I worry there may be violence in the general population over it.

Sorry to say this, but of course there will be violence. Trump is fermenting it. He will do anything and everything to stay in power. I expect he will even claim that his supporters need to kill democrats to 'save' democracy.

The big question is when he calls on the military as their Commander in Chief to use force to defend him will they?

Now it has emerged that the 20 minute non-event meeting with people unknown to junior and Kusner were not only know to them but have documented business dealings together and that the Russian lawyer was in NY to defend a Russian company accused of money laundering that also has links to Trump and Kushner. The best part is the day of the meeting she appeared in front of a NY court to argue the case for her client (who is also linked to Putin's inner circle)...

I bet Kushner is shitting himself because daddyinlaw cant pardon him on the charges coming there as they are state charges. And now we know why Muller is working with the NY State Attorney. Wonder how long until Donny Donny Jnr and Jarrad find themselves in front of Mullers Federal Grand Jury followed quickly by a trip to answer the same questions in front of a NY Grand Jury?

That bit in the second paragraph is what's really important. Trump thinks he can keep everyone around him loyal and silent with the promise of a pardon....but if serious state charges come into this we may see people jumping ship quickly. Interesting interesting....

State crimes are only pardonable by the Governor or state board of pardons (depending on the state).

It doesn't help Trump and his friends that the Governor of New York State is generally, and currently, a Democrat

The latest thing I am now hearing is that the reason Trumps (Daddy, Donnie, Jnr and now Kushner) businesses have so many mob ties is because they are all in the mob and have been for decades! And that that is why the Russian mob were able to get Trump to launder their money, because that has been his role in the mob for decades.

If this is true it explains so much of Trumps attitudes, his total dishonesty and why he has never been held accountable for his actions.

I'm only repeating what i am hearing being reported from US news outlets. Apparently the mob had a 25% stake in Daddy Trumps New Jersey construction company. And Donny bought his concrete from the mob at inflated prices with money that has not been accounted for (money laundering). Also Donny rented and bought his property in Atlantic city from the mob and then used the casinos he set up in those properties to launder more mob money. When Donny looked as if he might go under his daddy gave him a $3 million loan by way of buying $3 million of chips from his casinos and the source of that money is unknown. The evidence is piling up so much that people are making the accusations on US national TV.

Now I would be surprised if Donny is a 'made man' but not all mobsters are, and I think there could well be truth in the claim.

According to my work colleague, the charges may actually be directed at DNC Party activists. Best not start gloating just yet.

I would 100% like to see actions against Trump campaigners but recent news suggests that DNC activists may have also been at work trying to subvert the election by actually paying for an anti Trump dossier.

I know this, but Muller unlike Donny is a clever bugger and will use federal indictment to get ikkle donny to issue pardons which will remove Miranda and 5th amendment rights which will then produce the goods to bring the lot down with NY State indictments! LoL

What everybody forgets is that because of the method of firing Comey there are a lot of debts to be settled, you dont get to fire an untouchable because he is not corruptible without the other untouchables coming after you.

Manafort and/or his close associates are the most likely one to be arrested. The dawn raid on his house indicated that he had incriminating evidence that they thought hed try and destroy. They'll want to flip him to get higher ups because thats standard practice in these investigations.

Very true.

It's also interesting to note that Manafort has been indicted today because of a statute of limitation issue. The option has been left open to further indict on other charges in the future. So this is just the beginning of it all...a beginning that has been preemptively started in a way.

The slow motion car crash that is the Trump presidency continues.

If they can flip Manafort now he's facing charges then things will get very interesting. $18m in laundering charges along with the rest could mean significant jail time which at his age could mean he lives out the rest of his days in a jail cell.

Anyone noticed how Kushner and Ivanka have disappeared from the background of every photo op and been replaced by Melania? Is that Donny boy preparing to throw them under the bus or are they the ones getting ready to throw pops to the wolves?

Yeah...I was wondering the same.

I've read some stuff that indicates he's going to plead guilty. I'm wondering if this was a compromise...that he gets charged with something relatively minor, like false statements to the FBI, pleads guilty, but then cooperates with the investigation in exchange for not being charged with more serious stuff? I don't know...I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

Didn't Trump ask Mueller's predecessor to let Flynn off the hook?

The question, therefore, would have to be that if Flynn is being charged with "effectively" lying - what does Trump know if he asked the FBI to let Flynn off?

I really do wonder if this slow reeling in of the minnows is just an information gathering exercise and the real target is not just Donald Trump, but the Trump Empire. Russian collusion is the name of the game but once some serious Discovery gets underway...

I have had experience of US Law (albeit civil) and it is just not possible to hide away from even the smallest of even genuine mistakes. I cannot believe that an organisation of the International nature and size of the Trump empire has not made mistakes. I would not be surprised to eventually see this lead to tax evasion, money laundering and more, and ultimately the complete dismantling of Trump and his organisation.

see.... the interesting thing is that it is one 1 charge we are seeing.... and it he plea's guilty to just the one charge my question now be "what do they have backing that up to make him flip"

we know about about the flynn turkey stuff.... we know about the stuff with flynn and flynn jr...... they could have thrown the book at him.... but this is the only charge!!!!

obviously they are not telling us everything to not tip hands, if they had charged him with other stuff it may have given the game away.... but this now shakes the tree a little looser!!!

see... if the official excuse was that he was fired for lying to pence.. this now say he was not the only person to know he was lying to pence!!!!

remember they let both pence and reibus go on the sunday morning shows to defend flynn.....

Reince Preibus was CoS, Bannon was a special advisor. General Kelly is now CoS.

However Preibus had no real power in the White House and was there as a concession to the RNC as much as what he could do for Trump.

Bannon was certainly the number 2 for a while but now hes nowhere.

More to the point the investigation is moving at a rapid pace and Mueller is making huge progress on getting to the bottom of what happened. Investigations like this dont normally have guilty pleas this soon.

Now it looks as if Trump's payment of $130,000 through a shell company set up by his personal lawyer may have been an 'in-kind contribution', which would violate several Federal campaign finance laws.

So we have now got to a point where Flynn's non story has moved through a web of Russian spies and stories of Russian hookers being recorded pissing on a bed for Trump to him committing federal offences by paying off a porn star to stop her telling her story prior to the election. But apparently his bible thumping redneck Christian base still think the guy is OK and should get a 'do-over' (or a Mulligan as it is called in golf (something he takes lots of [apparently]))...

Read the NYT article and quite disappointed, nothing new in it to be honest. I'm still waiting for a new 'deep throat to emerge from the shadows and hammer the final nails into Trumps coffin.

For some reason I think this time round Muller already has his insider and all the evidence he needs to remove Trump but that Trump has made it personal and Muller intends to put a traitors noose round his fat neck and force the GOP to make him and his conspirators (family) swing or swing with him. My opinion, based on how he is misusing and corrupting his office to enrich himself and his family and seemingly getting away with it, and Muller's reputation for being incorruptible, nothing more.
