falling out with your best mate over politcs
Jump to: Newest in thread
after a brief fone discussion on the weeks news , my best friend asked who I'd be voting for .. it wasnt the one I'd normally vote for or the one he'd be voting for .. he became quite angry and a little abusive ..very nearly hung up on him ..might block his number for a few days if he's gonna get so angry.
has this happened to anyone else with close friends or family. |

why would he do that? seems a bit weird to me.
ask if you wanna discuss something, don't ask if it'll piss you off or you can't handle the answer.
nobody would fall out with me over politics, unless they were a sexist dick or racist or something like that. |

Unfortunately we've lost the art of friendly debate.
We seem unable now to be able to accept we may have differring opinions, and that's ok as long as we respect each others opinions and beliefs and be willing to agree to disagree. |

"Religion +politics are generally best avoided as table topics!
Nah.
Fight fight fight fight fight!
I'm conflict averse "
Then just sit back and watch.
I love it.
Get me a big old spoon and I'll go.

I don't talk politics or religion with most people because it makes for an easier life.
Some people (especially in todays society- where they can freely stick to their own circle of beliefs) aren't tolerant of each others differences.
I think its great to have a range of friends with different ideas otherwise how can you challenge your own values/beliefs, I just say neutral if the discussion comes up and see it from both sides. |

I don't talk politics with many but I've got friends with a big range of views. I find it really odd that people would only hang out with those with the same opinions. |

I’ve fallen out and stopped all communication with old friends who have over the years developed far right views, although that’s more to do with their views on race / religion than politics but it’s intertwined. Good riddance. |

Well, as I talk about race so much, I’d find it hard to be friends with people that don’t agree with much of my politics. I tend to have lots of friends that range from pretty left wing to very left wing which I recognise is a bubble but my friendships are with people I should feel safe with. I get enough exposure to people that don’t politically agree with me on the internet Anne amongst family. |

Yes, this for me too.
I'm always up for chatting about the important stuff... makes you see people in a different light I suppose and if it's something I feel strongly about then we are going to clash often and that's not what I want from a friendship. |

I definitely know what you mean .. I've stopped talking about what I know and my views do some people because you have to realise some people are just not ready to accept certain things that are happening in the world.. if you think that a political person in power can make a change you are dreaming and hugely mislead.. people appointed to be in power of countries (world leaders) don't make a difference they just deliver the message they are told by the people in charge.. the last president to be out of this circle of corruption was Trump.. created peace in the Middle East for the first time in years.. settled threats from Russia and North Korea.. not one bomb was dropped in 4 years he pulled all troops home ..never took a wage .. fucking legend.. but he didn't fit in the corrupt peado cult of the presidential manner.. the only two presidents who had the same views as him was JFK and Lincoln .. what happened to those two ??? A guy died a few weeks ago when a disagreement was had about Welsh politics, one punch, stumbled and hit his head, and goodnight. Story goes that the guy who died was pushing it and goading him about it and the resulting death wasn’t the punch so much as the fall soon after. I think it’s still ongoing. |

one of the few things i try to avoid with those outside my circle
have an idiot at work believes just about everything the dailymail spoon feeds him .
latest rant was "those on benefits shouldnt get any help with energy bills as they are all lazy and dont deserve it"when it was pointed out by them that at least two of our colleagues are in receipt of in work benefits as they are single parents he didnt have the answer just deflected into " not you your different you know who i mean the doley scroungers " new lad then pipes up "i wasnt working for six months after company closed during covid applied for hundreds of jobs before i got this was i a scrounger " scuttled off no answer |

Life is to short for that shite, when it comes to political views we all only listen with the intent to reply when really we should listen with the intent to understand, not necessarily agree but understand. |

"Never talk about politics with your family or friends, it won’t end well "
I don't talk to much of my family, but there's one exception. My half-brother and I are at opposite ends of the political spectrum. And we regularly phone each other to discuss what's happening in the world of politics. It can be very refreshing to hear a different viewpoint, and talk to someone that actually forms their own opinion.
So, our differing politics is the only thing that keeps us together. |

I like to. My friends usually have interesting opinions. One or two of my family have moronic options, so I usually just avoid them all together. |

No. All of our conversations are spoken, and the spoken word is too immediate to hold someone to language conventions.
I save my pedantry for the written word, when people really have no excuse for not prooof-reading before posting. |

I'm happy to, as the range of ideas and opinions leads to interesting, intelligent discussion. It's the people who break down relationships, not the subject matter and I'm always happy to prioritise relationships, rather than having to 'win' any discussion. I can't always be right, nor know and understand everything about topics, so sandboxing myself into an isolated vacuum, stifles growth. Plus, getting to better unstained people I'm close to, is valuable.
I'd certainly question my judgement, if someone had highly morally dubious justifications for political beliefs but it's not occurred.

I really don't talk about politics anywhere other than a keyboard, yes I know there are many names for that kind of person.
The reason being it can drive people apart and cause way too many arguments, so now I just keep quiet and pretend to ignore when friends family colleagues get into it.
Its really not worth falling out with people over those lot in parliament whatever party they are from. |

I find it strange that some of you don't make friends with people who's ideologies and views on things don't align with yours
I'm not saying your friends have to be yes people however there's a stark difference between Labour voters and Tory voters and I couldn't imagine having a friendship with a Tory voter in a million years.
Or maybe I am jaded because I rarely come across Torys in real life and when I do I can usually tell that they're not the kind of person I could build a friendship with |

Getting to the point of being angry and abusive is obviously not good but as long as you listen to each other and put your view respectfully then having friends with opposing political views can be beneficial. In my opinion that's better than only having friends or listening to those that agree with you. |

Politics rarely spoken about with family for all the reasons given by others. I find friends generally associate with politically like-minded people, but not exclusively. I've been a member of local sports clubs and associations over the years and there's a good mix of left and right and you just have to try to get on. But if I'm just down the pub, I guess it's true you congregate with similar.
With families I know, what seems fairly common is that people on the left of the political spectrum tend to be young and idealistic, while on the right they to be older and more pragmatic and more resistant to change. All this is good news for the Conservatives. The population as a whole is getting older, after all. What’s more, older people are more likely to vote than younger people and not only not have mortgages affected by rising interest rates, but have savings benefitting from them.

"As i don't generally associate with Tories, its never really been an issue "
Years ago I had a girlfriend who stated that she would talk with anybody except tories.
Over the years I slowly understood where she was coming from and recently I understand even more.
Back then, I was still suffering from a tory upbringing but, sensibly, kept it under wraps while becoming more worldly. The wraps became discarded when there was nothing more to cover up.
My spell checker flags up that I don't capitalise tories but neither do I with gods. |
