Theresa May is chicken shit to debate

Weak ass excuse to see she debates with Corbyn every week in the House of Commons so what about all the other party leaders in devolved parliaments

My guess she is shite feart to go infront of a camera against Nicola Sturgeon because the question will come up about independence no doubt and people are fed up with her shite auto que piss poor lines of now is not the time to have an independence referendum so when is the time then since she claimed last year now is not the time to have a GE election but the u -turn now is the time to have a GE election piss poor Theresa May is have a look at her voting record since 1998 and see how shite she really is

Grantham

The incumbent has everything to lose and nothing to gain by doing a TV debate. The others have everything to gain, and nothing to lose.

Tony Blair was the first to refuse to do a TV debate, followed by David Cameron.

As the SNP is limited to Scotland, then their voice in this election only needs to be heard in Scotland. I would imagine that Ms Davidson is relishing a live chat with Ms Sturgeon!

The time for an independence referendum in Scotland will be after Brexit is fully completed, however long that takes. Sturgeon will just have to put her toys back in her pram and wait.

Makes no difference to me as I wouldn't watch TV debates anyway.

I'm sick and tired of all these Americanisms that we adopt in this country.

School Proms etc.

Then again, I suppose it's somewhat ironic that America was populated by a whole load of British settlers.

This coming from someone who drives an American car too

Why would she want to waste time talking and listening to shite on the tv to increase the tv ratings and achieve feck all else?

All just to satisfy people who want to grandstand on tv to the masses that they are still hanging on to the vain hope of trying to hold up brexit as long as possible hoping against hope of even trying to stop it

Just a waste of time let the government put all the energy into the negotiations and not waste time taking shite on the tv.

May was invisible during the Brexit debates etc for her own chosen reasons, whilst admitting she supported remain (no one remembers as she let the others self-destruct). She is weak in many areas as well as calculating. This skipping of pre-election debates is similar.

Do you mean the televised debate tradition that only started 2 elections ago

For the record I think she should appear on at least one if invited and the other main party leaders are appearing. If she doesn't people will see it as a sign of weak leadership.

Democracy is about a lot more than voting every so often. It includes things like debates and opposition. You know, those inconvenient things that get in the way of absolute power.

Democracy is about a lot more than voting every so often. It includes things like debates and opposition. You know, those inconvenient things that get in the way of absolute power."

And because I was interested I even looked it up:

"Democracy consists of four key elements: (a) A political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections; (b) The active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life; (c) Protection of the human rights of all citizens, and (d) A rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens"

Funnily enough (d) is also probably unpopular amongst those claiming to support democracy. You remember those pesky "enemy of the people" judges right?

And don't even start me on (c)!

Next time I hear any Brexiter bang on about democracy I'm going to laugh in their face.

Maybe just maybe its because she is the leader of the SNP and First Minster in Scotland where she represents the Scottish people yes i know am gonna get that the whole i didnt vote for SNP but thing is the SNP were elected in Scotland so she does represent the whole of Scotland.

What would be to fear by not allowing the leader of the SNP /First Minster to debate ?

It really is very simple, so try reading it more slowly this time, Sturgeon is not a Westminster MP and she is not intending to stand as a Westminster MP. The UK general election is about Westminster seats, so it would be more credible for the SNP to put forward one of their Westminster MP's for any televised general election debate such as Alex Salmond MP or Angus Robertson MP. What are you afraid of putting one of those forward instead?

I think an empty chair strategy for Theresa May in one of these televised debates would be a good move for her to make. Then the public can really see the shambolic alternatives go at it with each other and the horrific prospect of any one of them getting any where near a sniff of power would see Theresa May and the tories hoover up votes in droves.

I was surprised to hear most political commentators reckon Corbyn, that's right Jeremy Corbyn, generally trounces May at pmq's.

It's only the pre prepared jokes that get airtime plus the right wing media are so scared of Corbyn they would never dare report a bit of truth.

It does explain why she isn't doing a televised debate where every one can see it.

It's not only Corbyn who Teresa May debates at PMQ's every Wednesday, it's the Lib dem leader Tim Farron and the former SNP leader Alex Salmond, although Salmond doesn't seem to have much to say, he leaves most of the talking to Angus Robertson.

You fail to see Alex Salmond is an MP and foreign affairs spokesman in the House of Commons and Angus Robertson is the Depute Leader of the Scottish National Party and spokesperson on the Constitution in the House of Commons

Any MP can ask the Prime minister a question at PMQ's, or does Alex Salmond regularly lose his voice on a Wednesday lunchtime?

At PMQ's i think you will find as Angus is the leader in the House of Commons for the SNP and they only get a certain amount of questions they can ask they cant just stand up and ask questions when they want to jesus i think you need to look up on how PMQ's works on how many questions each get

I regularly watch it live on Parliament television or listen to it live on the radio so I'm fully aware of the format and how it works thanks. "

Clearly you're not as you said anyone can ask a question. Now go and Google "order paper" and report back to the class.

Ah so you will agree then that they only get a certain amount of questions that they can ask and they cant just stand up and shout out and ask a question to the PM or they would be there for hours as every MP would want to ask endless questions. The only way someone can stand up and ask something if the person talking at the time gives way.

No need to Google anything I already know. An order paper is also subject to being selected by the speaker. Then again as MP Alex Salmond very rarely opens his mouth on a Wednesday lunchtime maybe he doesn't quite understand how the whole thing works.

I never actually said they could, that was an assumption on your part. It's obvious if you have any knowledge about the subject that the speaker selects MP's who want to ask questions. Thought that went without saying but now it appears It needed to be explained to you.

Yes and I thought that being selected by the speaker beforehand was so blatantly obvious it didn't need to be said. It appears you have no knowledge of the subject at hand without referring to Google first maybe go and educate yourself a bit before you post any more.

If you read between the lines you will see why she is afraid to go against the rest of the leaders. Her excuse was that she goes every week in the house of commons and debates with Corbyn but she doesnt come up against the SNP leader and Plaid Cymru leader or Sinn fein leader and there is where the real problem comes from her as she will be forced into answering questions she keeps dodging through fear that she fucks up

Like i said people should have a wee read at her record since 1998 on certain votes to see how piss poor she is

Ah so you will agree then that they only get a certain amount of questions that they can ask and they cant just stand up and shout out and ask a question to the PM or they would be there for hours as every MP would want to ask endless questions. The only way someone can stand up and ask something if the person talking at the time gives way.

Subject to being selected by the speaker. Do try to keep up.

Blah blah blah.

So you can't just stand up and ask a question then? Doh!

I never actually said they could, that was an assumption on your part. It's obvious if you have any knowledge about the subject that the speaker selects MP's who want to ask questions. Thought that went without saying but now it appears It needed to be explained to you.

You wrote this:

"Any MP can ask the Prime minister a question at PMQ's"

Yes and I thought that being selected by the speaker beforehand was so blatantly obvious it didn't need to be said. It appears you have no knowledge of the subject at hand without referring to Google first maybe go and educate yourself a bit before you post any more. "

Right so if Alex Salmond is not selected by the speaker beforehand how can he lose his voice if he has not been selected ? like i said as Angus Robertson is the leader of the SNP down in Westminster it is Angus each week that gets to ask the PM a certain amount of questions at PMQ'S only if Angus gives way to another MP they can then speak but Angus is the one asking the PM the questions in PMQ's on Scottish matters

Amazing how quickly you back peddle. I did promise myself previously I wouldn't engage with you. It's like debating a child at a pantomime.

I've not back peddled on anything. You thought you were being a smart arse with your 'order paper' which you dragged up from Google when it appears you didn't even realise MP's had to be selected by the speaker. "

Dude, why are you arguing when you've so clearly been schooled?

"Why would she want to? She's already won

And I thought you supported democratic traditions, or is that only when it suits you?

What democratic tradition are you talking about? The one where people go to the polling booths and vote? Yes I support that one and that is where she will win by a country mile

Democracy is about a lot more than voting every so often. It includes things like debates and opposition. You know, those inconvenient things that get in the way of absolute power.

Next time I hear any Brexiter bang on about democracy I'm going to laugh in their face."

Why?

And you talk about democracy then had to google what it was??

True, which is what she does all the time and why she will be elected with a large majority. I think maybe you're confusing debates with slanging matches, which is what televised 'debates' usually sink to

Sadly TV debates seem to appeal to the cult of the personality that seems to exist at the moment. Personally, I'd rather we didn't have them. Parliament is televised, newspapers and news channels (as well as Hansard) publish what is being said, and you can get opinions from sources depending on your political views - we read the private eye, guardian, times and bbc news just in case anyone wants to know.

An hour of TV debate adds nothing to the mix

Sorry but I disagree. News sources inevitably have their own spin. In a debate you get it direct from the course.

And I've seen quite a few research articles where the conclusions were that the debates influenced a lot of voters, particularly younger ones.

And I've seen quite a few research articles where the conclusions were that the debates influenced a lot of voters, particularly younger ones.

That why Brexit won?"

No, that was probably more the lies from the Leave campaign combined with the work of Cambridge Analytica.

"Why is Nicola Sturgeon wishing to appear on tv on an election debate when she isnt even standing to be elected in that election?

why is she allowed to appear?"

Because Ms Sturgeon is the leader of one of the biggest parties on the Westminster Parliament.

Angus Robertson us the leader of the SNP in the Commons. He is a MP.

Nicola Sturgeon is the leader of the SNP and First Minister of the devolved Scottish Parliament. She is a MSP.

"Sadly TV debates seem to appeal to the cult of the personality that seems to exist at the moment. Personally, I'd rather we didn't have them. Parliament is televised, newspapers and news channels (as well as Hansard) publish what is being said, and you can get opinions from sources depending on your political views - we read the private eye, guardian, times and bbc news just in case anyone wants to know.

Angus Robertson is the leader of the SNP at Westminster, Nicola is not an MP, so doesn't get to be there..., otherwise they'll let anyone in, like Farage!

Ahh so you don't know the difference between a forecast and a lie? In your world forecasts must always come true or they are lies? Interesting. Maybe you should get a job as a weather girl.

Sources from No 10 have reportedly said that the PM is considering a number for different TV formats other than head to head debate. So why don't you think they would just put misleading adverts on TV? On no, maybe not as we have the farce of a situation the a permanent decision like leaving the EU and majorly impacting the country and citizens require only a simple majority (and they can lie on TV) yet a temporary event such as an election is far stricter. I mean they required a supermajority to vote to dissolve parliament two years early!

Yes they are the rules. Shame leave supporters don't understand them. Eg many of them still don't understand that the referendum was merely advisory and hence why just a simple majority was required. All other legally binding referendums have required a supermajority.

But yes, we digress. May is not going to hold head to head TV debates as she knows she'll reveal her lack of plan or answers.

I'm sure her plan will be revealed before the election, a manifesto that people can either support or not. Though I think she would wipe the floor with the other political pygmies in a tv debate it's pointless. You can promise the earth when you know you've got no chance of ever getting into power

"I was surprised to hear most political commentators reckon Corbyn, that's right Jeremy Corbyn, generally trounces May at pmq's.

"

That's not what even my Labour friends tell. What they tell me is that he does occasionally score a few points but most of the time he's either playing at the wrong end of pitch, often scoring own goals, or he's not even playing on the same game on the same pitch.

Sorry.

"

It's only the pre prepared jokes that get airtime plus the right wing media are so scared of Corbyn they would never dare report a bit of truth.

It does explain why she isn't doing a televised debate where every one can see it. "

Ms May will not have a head to head debate with the other leaders because, put quite simply, she doesn't feel the need to. She believes that she's going to win without having to have a televised debate and she's probably right.

Weak ass excuse to see she debates with Corbyn every week in the House of Commons so what about all the other party leaders in devolved parliaments

My guess she is shite feart to go infront of a camera against Nicola Sturgeon because the question will come up about independence no doubt and people are fed up with her shite auto que piss poor lines of now is not the time to have an independence referendum so when is the time then since she claimed last year now is not the time to have a GE election but the u -turn now is the time to have a GE election piss poor Theresa May is have a look at her voting record since 1998 and see how shite she really is"

There's no need for her to do the TV debates. She's going to win, its just by how much.

As for Charman Sturgeon, she is an insignificant irritation. A bit like athletes foot, only not as attractive.

No, politicians without a clue how we are going to get everything we need to get done in two years done. A leader of this effort who hasn't even bothered to work out what the costs of 'no deal' would be. So is hardly in any position to negotiate a deal. Which is why May doesn't want to go on TV as it will spoil the illusion.

Why?

And you talk about democracy then had to google what it was??

Who would check facts before stating an opinion, I must be a loser.

Correct

Sums up your approach to facts I suppose.

I apologise, I'll just make stuff up in future. Maybe then you'll believe it.

What, like TV debates are a tradition?

Debates in general are.

True, which is what she does all the time and why she will be elected with a large majority. I think maybe you're confusing debates with slanging matches, which is what televised 'debates' usually sink to"

You said Theresa May does it all the time debating ? Do you mean in the House of Commons ? She does with Corbyn but she does not with the SNP leader

My opinion she is shite feart to debate with Nicola as she will have to answer hard questions that the public will see and call her out for not answering.

Empty chair seems the best way and we then can see Theresa May is coward to go infront of a camera to debate all leaders not just Corbyn.

Remember 2015 when Cameron said on live tv no child tax credits and then win the election and thats what the Tories were planning on doing thats why its important to have tv debates to keep these assholes to account of what they say and face all leaders and face the public when the public in the crowd in where they are holding the debate can get to ask questions to all leaders why do people think Theresa May should get away with no answering questions that she may not like ? Simple answer she is coward and she wont have her wee Tory pals by her side to clap and shout out Here here here here outdated pish!! thats sad in 2017 MP's that represent the people shout out here here here here.

Yes she does but Angus is not the leader of the SNP is he ? He is the leader of the SNP in Westminster not the leader of the party the big give away is a leaders tv debate

Courteous? You must watch a different PMQ's than me as every week she is pish poor at actually answering the question being asked to her she goes off into her own wee world and cop's out answering.

Take for example Angus has asked her more than once if she thinks she has a UK wide agreement on brexit ? We all knwo the answer is no she doesnt but she didnt answer it she went through with it anyway. Its the same with Corbyn ive noticed he does ask some good questions some of the time but never gets an answer

Then you will know that there is no mechanism for NS and TM to actually debate on a regular basis!

NS could always stand as a candidate in a constituency should she desire but I would hazard a guess that she won't.

I watch PMQs every week. TM does what she has to, and even I can see the despair in her eyes, as the SNP "waste" their questions on what is basically a mischief making exercise, something the SNP promised to do in Westminster.

SNP is a minority party, with a single policy in a small country. Surely May has bigger things to worry about than a midget in Scotland

I'm sure her plan will be revealed before the election, a manifesto that people can either support or not. Though I think she would wipe the floor with the other political pygmies in a tv debate it's pointless. You can promise the earth when you know you've got no chance of ever getting into power

Exactly. You can promise the earth if you don't think that people will actually vote for Brexit. The wheels come off though when you underestimate people's anger after you've spent years wrecking their lives and manage to successfully convince them that it's all someone else's fault.

The Emporer has no clothes on.

-Matt

What do you mean, don't think people will actually vote for Brexit? Maybe you didn't notice but leave and remain were a lot closer than the Tories and Labour are now. Many predicted Brexit, myself included, the only surprise being how close the vote was. And wheels come off? What's that, another Osbournesque forecast?

The government admitted that it didn't expect Brexit to happen, which is why they did no planning for it. And why we are in the clusterfuck we are currently in.

-Matt

What clusterfuck? You mean politicians moaning and trying to derail things? In the real world there's been nothing but good news so far. Only yesterday the IMF upgraded the UK's prospects. Again

-Matt"

Why, what exactly do we need to get done in 2 years? And you will find she will be on TV plenty over the coming weeks, debating with political journalists who actually know what they're talking about, not the motley crew of the other party leaders, jeez they must be scraping the barrel, and the general public. By the way, what are the costs of a no deal for the EU?

ITV only want to have the debate because it gives them ratings nothing more.

They will make a big deal about May not being there

To be honest would not change my vote on who does and does not turn up for the media circus.

"Then you will know that there is no mechanism for NS and TM to actually debate on a regular basis!

NS could always stand as a candidate in a constituency should she desire but I would hazard a guess that she won't.

I watch PMQs every week. TM does what she has to, and even I can see the despair in her eyes, as the SNP "waste" their questions on what is basically a mischief making exercise, something the SNP promised to do in Westminster."

Waste their questions ? So wanting to know from the PM if she things she has a UK wide agreement on brexit is wasting questions now ? Lets not forget it was Theresa May that said she would look to get a UK wide agreement before she triggers brexit

No SNP made it clear they will NOT vote with the Tories and will make things hard for them as an opposition should not go and vote with the Tories Can anyone not see what it done to Labour in Scotland voting with the Tories let they still havent fucking learned one single bit how much people are pissed off with Labour

SNP is a minority party, with a single policy in a small country. Surely May has bigger things to worry about than a midget in Scotland "

Clue is in the name its a tv leaders debate and Nicola is the leader of the SNP and Scotland is in the so called equal partnership and family of nations in the UK am not seeing it.

I dont get all this SNP is minority government yeah thats true but do people not see what happened the last time in 2007 when SNP were a minority government in the next election in Scotland in 2011 the people thanked them and made them a majority government and lets not forget in 2016 yes they got a minority government and were only two short of getting that majority again and they also got over a million voters to vote for them in a designed parliament to stop majority government every happening not a bad record for a party that people seem to think is useless when a majority still think they are looking out for the Scottish people also not to metion the amount of English people that have signed up to be members of the SNP even though pro union supporters will try hard to paint them off as anti English

Re the pmq spat that broke out

Corbyn gets 6 questions a week

Angus Robertson as the 3rd largest party gets 2

The all the other leaders get 1 question every 4 weeks ish

Anyway the point stands only soundbites makes it in the main news... and you are going to reach more people in a prime time debate than you ever would on a Wednesday lunch

The problem here is that people are remembering the EU referendum TV debates. That was

a straight two party fight.

General Elections are different, and have different rules. Broadcasters cannot favour one party over another, and I believe that all parties have monitors in place to make sure that this doesn't happen.

You invite the two main parties, then who else do you invite? The Greens have one MP, so they will want a voice. The SNP are a purely Scottish party, so do you invite them? Then UKIP will say that they want to appear? Does that then upset the Welsh, as both now have no MPS? As it's a "Brexit" election, do Sinn Fein suddenly decide that they want a podium?

It's just not as simple as putting three podiums in front of a TV audience

Yes there maybe people in England that hate her but the fact remains there is people in England born in England that think Nicola is a great leader and politician and there is English people members of her party so the pro union side cant really paint the picture the SNP are anti English that is all a wee scare story as they are running out of ideas of to try and get rid of SNP even trying the tactical voting pish i hear Take a swatch and pro union supporter Jill Stephenson asking how is best to tactical vote to keep SNP out this is the same woman that said this about English born pro Independence supporters in Scotland

I quote '' Those fuckers from down south'' That is her calling English born people fuckers all because they live in Scotland and believe in independence nothing shocks me anymore about how nasty some of the pro union side can be

Oh and they just to get it independence is not SNP and SNP is not independence all it shows is their bitterness and hatred towards the SNP because the will of the Scottish voters elect the SNP to govern Scotland and give Scotland a voice in the UK will the UK is still together for now

Few hateful comments on these political posts. Scots are often accused of hatred towards the english, when it seems to be the other way around with some people.

Maybe you should ask for a mandate to eject us from the UK , can guarantee half the scottish population would thank you, and the other half would see exactly how we are thought of.

And for the record we are an english/scottish couple, and find it sad reading the bitterness and venom in some of the posts on here.

SNP is a minority party, with a single policy in a small country. Surely May has bigger things to worry about than a midget in Scotland

Clue is in the name its a tv leaders debate and Nicola is the leader of the SNP and Scotland is in the so called equal partnership and family of nations in the UK am not seeing it.

I dont get all this SNP is minority government yeah thats true but do people not see what happened the last time in 2007 when SNP were a minority government in the next election in Scotland in 2011 the people thanked them and made them a majority government and lets not forget in 2016 yes they got a minority government and were only two short of getting that majority again and they also got over a million voters to vote for them in a designed parliament to stop majority government every happening not a bad record for a party that people seem to think is useless when a majority still think they are looking out for the Scottish people also not to metion the amount of English people that have signed up to be members of the SNP even though pro union supporters will try hard to paint them off as anti English I'm English and i know loads of English people who thinks shes bloody brilliant. She has more passion in her little finger the May has ever had in her lifetime.

I think maybe there's just a slight exaggeration somewhere there

Exaggeration in what ? In the passion part ? He is correct Nicola show passion on creating a equal and fairer Scotland and hopes the UK would do the same where is Theresa May show utter nastiness in the way she treats the people of the UK take the people unfit to work and there is people out there through no fault of their own will illness that they cant work losing their money all because the Tories want to cut their money to save money because they rack up the UK debt

Well TM labeled her own party the nasty party .So she does tell the truth on occasion.

No she didn't

Actually... yes she did......

She did it at a Tory party conference when she was the party chairperson... it was the year the tabloid decided to talk about her leopard print shoes instead

She said the tories had to tackle the perception that they were the nasty party by being more socially liberal "

No, she didn't. She said 'do you know what some people call us? They call us the nasty party'. That does not equate to her calling the Tories the nasty party.

I think maybe you're confusing debates with slanging matches, which is what televised 'debates' usually sink to

Mrs May does debate with the leader of the SNP in the Commons. She is courteous as with all MPS when answering Angus Robertson's questions at PMQs.Such confidence in a woman who lacks the ability to take on corbyn.Jesus titty christ anyone on this forum could debate him. This story will run on and on upto June. That knackered old goat knows she'll be butchered. . "

And the real problem with that is that while all the opponents are busy calling her a coward they are not addressing the biggest question that could persuade at least 48% of the voters, many who would normally vote Conservative, from voting for something else. There is only one issue that will either make or break this election for the Conservatives and that's BREXIT. Don't waist time on anything else.

Sturgeon is good but don't underestimate May. She's no fool.

"I know lots of English people who can't stand her, call her lots of names and would rather cut Scotland adrift to get rid of her!"

I can't stand Sturgeon either but just because I don't like or agree with her does not mean she's not an effective leader. Whether she's better than May is questionable but she far out classes Corbyn for sure.

+1 to this. If there was any goodwill between Scotland and the rest of the UK, she is eroding it. Hateful woman on her own agenda

Few hateful comments on these political posts. Scots are often accused of hatred towards the english, when it seems to be the other way around with some people.

Maybe you should ask for a mandate to eject us from the UK , can guarantee half the scottish population would thank you, and the other half would see exactly how we are thought of.

And for the record we are an english/scottish couple, and find it sad reading the bitterness and venom in some of the posts on here."

Well said.

The Conservatives may well lose some votes in some areas because of Brexit (maybe to the lib dems), but they will also gain votes in some areas because of Brexit (from ukip). I've voted ukip at the last 3 general elections but I'll be voting Conservative this time. When you look at how the EU referendum went on a constituency by constituency basis then Leave would have won by a landslide.

I think you're absolutely correct. There is little point in UKIPers and BREXITers voting for any other party except Conservative in constituencies where the Conservatives are either incumbent or stand a good chance of winning. So they will pick up those votes. However that doesn't change the point that, if you don't want BREXIT your best bet is to vote for either the LibDems where they are strong or whatever other candidate from any party that has the best chance of winning and prepared to stand on a pro-EU anti BREXIT ticket.

Central

The debates - if chaired etc properly - are an ideal opportunity for millions of the population to be given more insight into the manifesto that each party is publishing, where the leaders would be given direct and clear questioning - and stopped from bullshit)ing by repeated propaganda.

Last election there were few live interactions with Joe public that weren't stage managed by certain parties. If they have to cling to tight propaganda events then they are showing themselves as less trustworthy.

May's record has been piss poor for many years - a bottom feeder that's above her level of competence
