for nominating judges for the supreme court you always needed a 60 vote majority in the senate (this always assured judges couldn't be too left or right leaning as you need a lever of support on both sides to get this done..)
what the republicans have now basically decided to do is change to rules so that in future they voted so that now all you needed was a simple majority (51 votes)
it doesn't really matter for this one (gorsich is replacing scalia, who was about a right leaning thinking as they got) the interesting one is going to be the next one... or two! ruth bader ginsburg is coming up on 85, stephen bayer is coming up on 80... both of those are liberal judges...
if they were to go whilst trump has a republican senate majority.... it could make a huge different in the way rulings are interpreted... |
