Do you buy the argument that trading with a country gives us leverage in terms of their behaviour (apparently Theresa May believes this)?

TM is correct, but only up to a point, and then only if there is a massive imbalance in favour of one of the traders.

It should, when will we learn it is not up to us to tell people how to live.

They,ie the Saudis do not tell us how to live,we should not tell them.

We do not have to approve just as they do not need to approve of us,business is business and we all live in peace.Look at us telling the Iraqis how to live, that went well

Actually they do, just not directly. They use the likes of Al Queada, Boko Haram and IS to do it for them...

The EU has enormous influence over the people it trades with. It insists on certain standards. If you want to Trade with the EU, you must meet it's standards.

That is the biggest problem with getting an agreement between the EU and USA on a Trade Deal.

EU standards will probably eventually become the worldwide standard.

Bit silly all our kicking up a fuss about them really, since they were all pretty much sensible and we voted for 96% of them.

" They,ie the Saudis do not tell us how to live,we should not tell them."

Apart from sponsoring and financing Islamic terror, Saudi Arabia undermines western society by financing numerous mosques and installing extreme salafist clerics to preach their vile, disgusting ideology

I thought the biggest problem was Donald Trump telling the EU to fuck off?

I don't think Trumps views were particularly relevant in the previous 26 years, nor will they be after he's impeached.

I was thinking mainly about Malaysia when I started the thread - the president is pretty extreme and we are cosying up to him it seems.

In terms of telling others how to live I don't agree - the UK generally supports basic human rights which are pretty lacking in some of our new potential trading partners.
