"It's logical, demographics favour it, the Republic, freed from the once-dominant influence of the catholic church, is now a more modern and liberal society than Ulster, the younger generations are more resistant to the sectarian bigotry of the bad old days and in general most people north of the border, tired of conflict, are happy to enjoy the peace dividend of normal life. Add to the mix the countdown to a post-brexit landscape and the constant ability of current politics to spring surprises without end. Political establishments and "received wisdom" seem to be upended on a regular basis nowadays, so... How long until Irish unification becomes reality? My guess is within 10 years, but possibly even within 5." As long as that cowardly murdering twat Martin Mcguinness dies a painful death before it happens I couldn't care less when it is

Yep, the hate is strong there. I would recommend saving your time and energy. Going back to the topic, I think it will happen, but not in the immediate future. It will be 15 years yet at a minimum, maybe twice that. There is still a way to go yet, both north and south of the border. There is no doubt in my mind that the Brexit vote was a massive boost towards unification. What we will see before that is a much stronger assertive voice for an Irish identity in Northern Ireland. The violence may have ended for now but the fight is now a cultural fight. I don't believe that the IRA will resume their campaign, they have way too much to lose now. They could easily be in power in the Republic in a coalition government within 5 years. North of the border demographics is against the Unionist vote.

People like this, on both sides, need to not be a factor before we can have a comfortable peace. Then issues can be looked at through the lens of whats best for the NI people (whether thats reunification or not) instead of this myopic hatred. Northern Ireland will be a much better place without this lot.

I cannot remember many people who actively wanted to engage in violence or cause trouble . In that respect nothing has changed because people still want to live in peace. What has changed is that it has been possible to engage with the para militaries and broker an agreement. These organisations were and still are only supported by an exceptionally small minority. Para militaries are still active but are now engaged in drug dealing , fuel laundering and various other crimes ..

Do you mean the hatred handed out the IRA and their drug dealing supporters, or so you mean its cowardly leaders who murdered many both in Ireland and mainland U.K. I can't stand how so many have forgotten what a butcher he and his right hand mate were, and how they seek retribution for any wrong doing by the UK government and our amazing armed forces, but are above any insight in to what they did or ordered to be done on their behalf. Bs someone who served over there in the 70's I'm fully aware of what PIRA were up to but they certainly were not alone in murdering innocents.. Reconciliation is about taking an objective viewpoint and accepting that wrongs were done by all sides and that includes the state. Going on about only one side just leads to tit for tat and goes nowhere and the present and future generations of that part of the UK deserve better..

"It's always hilarious to hear Brits on about our world, calling our political representatives terrorists,so easily forgetting your blood tainted colonisation history as recently as Iraq, the terror brought to our island by Brits far outweighs anything...However as many rational and intelligent commentators have said tit for tat gains nothing, compromise has to be made,a United ireland is inevitable, just a matter of time... The kind of people still blithering about the terrorism that existed on one side but ignoring the murders of the other are exactly the sort that couldnt tell the difference between a history book and a tin of beans. So its no surprise that they ignore the blood on the hands of their own government.. What a load of shit . If theres a reason Ireland is fucked up its people like these. and that ladies and gentlemen shows the stupid ignorance, but go on tell us all with your wonderful wisdom how us Irish are the fucked up ones, you invade a land you were never invited too, slaughter thousands, steal lands, inflict mass immigration, treat us as second class citizens in our own country...you'd know all this if you'd bother to pick up a history book.britain should feel nothing but shame towards its actions here...but all we want is peace, our country back and life to move forward...it's not complex,a truth and reconciliation process is the only way forward,of course unionists fear it...they don't want the people of Britain to hear the truth of their actions here...we made mistakes too and horrific ones..we can't defend the indefensible in some circumstances, but the troubles and terror were brought to us..... Why dont you educate me here and now,i thought that is how debates work " The negotiations that led to partition was at the threat of further violence from the British government. The Irish negotiators were threatened with 'immediate and terrible war' if they did not accept partition. The Irish extremist have been murdering people for 150 years, only curtailed by not being able to do more! Your argument is flawed by recent history, unless youve been unaware of the last 150 years of sectarian murders, or the troubles in n Ireland over the last 60 years. Since 1920 lots and lots of Catholics and protestants have crossed over the board for those very reasons. The fact that you refer to them as "neighbours" and not fellow Irish citizens says something about your motives. All the UK government did is stop Ireland crumbling into a sectarian civil war just like every other county that has similar circumstances has done, Syria, India/Pakistan, Palestine, Iraq, Libya, most of Africa. The first thing Hitler called for was unification, weve all got to be unified as true Germans!. You really have to ask whats behind nationalism to see its true colours

I didnt say they hadnt i said you had made up your mind from one side of the argument. Let me put it another way. Had you only been given facts from a brexit point of view you would conclude that brexit was correct or vise verse. Now as we know brexit has been divisive, the real question is not whats best or not anymore but how do you get the two sides to live without coming to blows?. In some way this obviously means compromise and thats the story of n.ireland

My guess is within 10 years, but possibly even within 5. As long as that cowardly murdering twat Martin Mcguinness dies a painful death before it happens I couldn't care less when it is This is the generation I talked about in my first post. People like this, on both sides, need to not be a factor before we can have a comfortable peace. Then issues can be looked at through the lens of whats best for the NI people (whether thats reunification or not) instead of this myopic hatred. Northern Ireland will be a much better place without this lot. agreed.. such views are repulsive, they only serve to highlight a complete lack of objectivity. Makes you wonder whether such people thrive and prosper on hatred and division.. He is such an evil twat that he will take to his death bed, where he buried the bodies of those he murdered or was co-involved in the murder off.Agreed ! They want enquiys into Bloody Sunday but also want to keep Stum about all thier own Atrocities ! " Without wishing to comment on the issues involved , the amount of money spent on this enquiry and funded by the tax payer is notbing short of disgracefull. Decisions had to be be made on the spur of the momement , anyone can spend endless time analysing events afer they have occurred . What does the achieve apart from waste tax payers money. I do not need a public enquiry to know what happened . There is sufficient information in the public domain.

" Ok lets say your right. Explain to me the last 150 years of sectarian murders or even better explain to me why 1 million Irish people are unionists" Firstly theres no "lets say youre right" about it. Its historical fact and not one anyone anywhere disagrees with. There was no vote or referendum for the 6 counties and whether theyd stay with the UK or join the Free State. The fighting started when the English invaded. It continued when the English murdered, r*ped, sold our people into indentured servitude and stole the land. It continued when the English decided to outlaw our own language in our own country and to enact these laws with force. It escalated when the English wouldnt leave when they were asked and the majority of the Irish people wanted them gone. So the Irish went to war with them and started targetting British military in Dublin. The British then reacted by slaughtering civilians including the infamous morning they drove a tank into a sports pitch and opened fire on men, women and children. We won the war of independence and when it was over Protestants were treated fairly and evenly in the Free State whereas up North the Carholics were mistreated. During a peaceful protest the British opened fire on peaceful protestors and injured and murdered them. This led some Catholics to believe that the British didnt understand anything but violence so they started the armed struggle against them. This was the start of the troubles and it was completely the wrong thing to do. Sinking to the level of British soldiers should never have been the road to take. The Irish Catholics should have taken the high road no matter how difficult it was. The nationalist paramilitary organisations targetted civilians, military and anyone who crossed them. They were quickly joined by Unionist paramilitaries who were just as bad but also had the backing of British intelligence and colluded with the protestant police force and British military. Tit for tat violence became the norm for 30 years. Every time a nationalist committed violence or murder the unionists would do the same and vice versa. Then it was finally agreed that we should have a peaceful resolution through the Good Friday agreement and the sectarian violence has almost miraculously been almost completely wiped out. The former paramilitary organisations on both sides have either disbanded or turned to crime which makes many question their motivations.

"if there is a referendum it won't be a simple 50 % plus 1 vote.... because of the sensitivity of the issue it would likely need a 60% or 2/3rds majority" Ah yes, it's the adherence to democracy that made Britain great!

There's a very interesting book called The Great War For Civilisation by Robert Fisk. He notes that many of the troublespots that he reported from were former colonies and places that saw conflict in WW1. Syria, India/Pakistan, Palestine, Iraq, Ireland....... The artificially constructed unionist majority discriminated in every way possible against the artificially constructed nationalist minority. This happened with the approval of the British government for over 50 years and spawned the outbreak of the troubles when the unionist government reacted violently to the civil rights protests looking for such lavish luxuries as "one man, one vote" and an end to discrimination in jobs and housing.

We've never invaded anyone, we have a policy of neutrality when it comes to war. We've never enslaved a race of people or attemtpted genocide. What bad things has this country done? Even as soon as we finally got our freedom we worked to have normalised relationa with the UK as quickly as possible. The best outcome would have been if Northern Ireland had treated their minority of catholics the same way the South treated their minority of protestants. You know, with basic human respect and as full and equal members of the country. If that had happened there would have been no violence because there would have been no peaceful marchers for Britain to murder. If they had treated catholics like equals and not mistreated them then there would be no trouble, no terrorism and we wouldnt have this problem today.

"So there Irish citizens with as much right as any other Irish citizen and they wished to remain part of the union and not under a Catholic church unlike what the majority of Ireland wanted? Tricky situation to solve and one thats been played out in lots of other countries. Ill let you into some good news, it turned out better for Ireland than it did for Syria How do you know what they wished to do? Are you psychic? . No, im simply going off nearly every other historical example of what happens to the minority by the majority when you have a major difference between them and a power vacuum, aka the middle East today You don't need to go to Syria to see that. " . Well that was clearly push back from nationalist comments at the beginning in 1920 that said they were more than happy with the outcome as the Catholic majority in some county's would allow for trouble from the outset and that they would soon outnumber the unionists for a democratic vote. All weve concluded from this debate is today we really still dont have a clue how to actually unite a truly divided populace where both sides can be happy without falling back onto nationalism and then purging the minority who disagree

Lets look back at my side of the argument. I said the best outcome for Ireland was in my opinion the current one, i said i was for n Ireland overseeing its own affairs. My entire argument against nationalisim was that it never seeks to look after the minority, in this case protestant unionists only to purge them, i pointed out countless cases throughout the world where this had occurred. Did i say what the UK government actions were good, no i said they were the best of the worst. Nationalists answer to how they would unite a divided populace(unionists and nationalism) is always just unite and it will be all jolly i promise. However historically?as i pointed out this is usually the opposite, they tend to purge them out of society or bring up little historical things like, oh there not really Irish, there descendants of immigrants even if theyve been here 400 years!!. So like i said i see it the opposite way, my opinion is that Ireland should think themselves lucky they didnt turn into Syria and remained at least relatively stable until the point that sometime in the distant future they could possibly put that big difference behind them and on that point i will bring you back to my first point that with people like the guy from Drogheda? spouting his nationalism i doubt it will happen anytime soon

Nationalism is usually associated with supremacy these days which is not what was going on over here. It should be noted that the man referred to as the father of Irish republicanism, Theobald Wolfe Tone, himself a protestant, referred to "uniting protestant, catholic, and dissenter" in a new and free Ireland. The 1916 proclamation of the republic also talked of "cherishing all the children of the nation equally". The Catholic Church only achieved its dominance as a result of supporting the winning side in the civil war, the dude armed and supported by your own government. It was after the establishment of the new executive that the clergy managed to gain influence. The revolutionary movement was a republican one and while the vast majority were catholics, they were not fighting for catholic supremacy. Many were excommunicated by the clergy, such was the pro British line that the clergy took during that revolutionary period.

That didnt happen in the Republic at any stage and therea no one on the nationalist side even hinting at that. Not to mention the obvious point of "of course we dont want to do that". "epetitive? I already explained how i got to that conclusion by looking at every other county that did similar and feel into a bitter civil war aka Baltic states, Syria, Iraq etc etc etc. Youve yet to tell me why this wouldnt happen just that, oh take my word for it?." Its been explained to you several times. We're not Syria or the Balkans. When the Free State came into being, by your logic, we'd have mistreated the protestants in the south. But that didnt happen. So rather than judge us on other peoples actions, judge us on our own. So thats the evidence that proves you wrong. But lets look at how ludicrous it is. Explain how this would actually work. We'd suddenly, out of nowhere, start persecuting protestants. Even though its against the declaration on human rights. Even though it breaches EU law and would get us fined to incredible amounts. Even though there is no public or political support for this. And the "purge" as you call it. Is that stealing land and houses and property from these people and forcefully deporting them from the country? You think we're suddenly going to set up a gestapo and suddenly do this. Despite the international blowback, despite the sanctions the UK would undoubtably and justifiably place on us. Despite the fact it would guarantee a return to violence in the North? Your opinion is stupid. Thats why youre getting called names here. I wont call you names but if this is actually the way you think then you have issues. Thats all I can say.

But it was quite clear i was talking about the historical context of partition from a hundred years ago and not last week. Honestly your just twisting everything i wrote. I was debating about how nationalism makes minorites inclusive, it clearly never has in the past anywhere in the world but lets assume youd be different just for you!. For the last 18 years Northern Ireland could have voted sinn fein if they wanted unity but they havent so they obviously didnt. Im happy to see them have this compromise if MAYBE thats what helps stop future violence because going off previous problematic countries thats whats happened
