Will all future politics, politicians and political leadership come from social media?

If you've got enough followers you must be worth hearing and following?

I hope not..I don't do social media.

But it is an interesting concept; the speed that things can be sent around the globe is staggering.

It's not just that, it's the ease with which people can interact (or believe they are interacting) with their icons/leaders.

Zuckerberg was one of the people I was thinking about. Piers Morgan was another.

Yes, it will be a celebrity culture in politics because they are more connected to the people.

"Yes, it will be a celebrity culture in politics because they are more connected to the people."

You think so? Do you mean connected in terms of, say, social media, or in terms of knowing what 'the people' need/want? You think, say Kim Kardashian is more connected to the people than, say, Jacob Rees-Mogg is?

I think that celebrities are aspired to more than 'traditional' politicians at the moment. Combined with major distrust of politicians, I could see celebrities being the future in politics.

Then again, Donald Trump show just how badly this can work out... you have someone breaking every security protocol out there because they believe that these things don't apply to them.

Would celebrities have the attention span to see it through though? Is that even important? What if our PM was only PM for a maximum 1 year term? Would that work better? If they know that they only have a short time to get things done?

Most celebritys are complete tools, the world would go to hell in a handbag faster than it currently is.

Mark zukenberg and elon musk aren't interested in anything but making money, you might as well just let corporations run the place?.

Here's a novel concept, why don't we just get back to politicans running the place without all this lobbying crap going on in the back!.

It's transient though isn't it, today's 100m followed are replaced with tomorrow's 150m when the social butterflies move on, don't forget for every person who hangs on Piers Morgan's utterances there's plenty more who would just prefer him to hang. I can see it as an abutment to traditional routes but it won't replace the Oxbridge/trade union/local counciler path

It is transient but during their phase in the spotlight they seem to be shaping the opinions and, out of that, policy, simply because it is easy to follow them from the comfort of your train seat/sofa/fag break at work.

I don't know about Zuckerberg but Elon Musk seems to have a social conscience, he made his money, cashed it in, and is now using it rather than exporting it to the Cayman Islands

The interesting one would be Larry Ellison.

Yeah elon would my choice. But to be fair he'll achieve more for humanity over the next twenty years outside of politics.

In many ways yes. Though there are two kinds I think - the entertainers and infotainers. So those like Zooella, Pewdiepie, Alex Jones and Buzfeed, who produce sensationalist info pieces, or entertainment and monetise it.

Then there are the smaller channels which provide stuff like educational resources, and free-speech discussion pieces.

Both have their popular and well known faces.

I always thought Oprah might run for president she has money and influence. Will Smith also. There is a cult of celebrity here more so over there.

I'd be a terrible idea, especially if they were running against trump. Fox, Breibart, and many other sources would point out how the left wing party of the working people, was now represented by celebrity elites. And depending on the person they would be right.

Yeah they'd spin that way but a celebrity elite versus celebrity elite might be an interesting counter to Donald . They could hardly deny trump isnt elite or a celbrity.Hes never held office before like all celebrities.

True, but at that point he'd have a term of experience. They could try counter spin and only show the success (or perceived success) of his administration.

Though it might work, celebrity vs celebrity.

I still hold that a strong non-corporist, left leading candidate would do better against him.

There is a very interesting article called The Rise of the Weaponized AI Propaganda Machine on a site called scout that's worth reading about the role of facebook and a company called Cambridge Analytica. They were quite influential in both the Brexit referendum and the recent US elections

Thats interesting we all know our data is mined daily.Just think if the big tech billionaire players get behind a candidate and consider the power they have on the net and the new money is tech money not oil money. They could be a strong challenge to trump.

Seems this has turned into yet another under cover thread for anti Trump zealots

As I have mentioned on other threads, while I don't like him as a person, His election seems to be a real shake up of reality from the usual political slumber!

Its making people THINK ! Question , and discuss reality , and that was a much needed thing in the Cyber age of "social" networks !

Now .... would you want HOLLYWOOD running the country ?

Just because you are famous and can act or have a successful Show ( Oprah) , does it mean you have any notion or how to run a country ? In fact most of these people rely entirely on others to cater for most aspects involved in daily life!

In this respect , Trump is quite an exception, cause while being rich, and celebrity, he is also a business man , and the latter is really what matters !

Dont see anybody else with the same pre requisites , to go up against him !

Have you seen the extent of Oprah's business interests? She's every bit a business person as Trump.

Precisely ! It is relevant , and I responded because Trumps election is related to the use of the means cited in the said article !

Trump´s was probably the first election team to use it extensively. In fact I saw a feature on that subject and the guy who ran it ! He apparently knew 2 whole days before, that Trump was going to win, !

Indeed, reminds me of Back to the Future:

Doc: Then tell me, future boy, who's President of the United States in 1985?

Marty: Ronald Reagan.

Doc: Ronald Reagan? The actor? Then who's vice president? Jerry Lewis?

You're comparing apples and oranges. Reagan was Governor of California for 9 years. He tried unsuccessfully to get the Republican nomination. Trump has changed his party affiliation five times.

A better comparison might be with Governor Jimmie Davis of Louisiana who went from a successful country music and gospel singing career to two terms as Governor
