Woody Johnson!
Fellow billionaire and owner of the NY Jets. He was one of the biggest donators to Trump's campaign.
Hmm. What do you all think of the choice? |

Why the rolly-eye? I'd like all opinions here. I don't know much about the guy and I was curious about British people's views on the subject.
Personally I grew up in N.Y. and I don't like the Jets, so I'm already biased |

There's a fundamental difference between the British and American ambassadors.
Ours is a full time civil servant that represents the country what ever it's foreign policy which is derived by the government.
America's is a political figurehead, appointed purely for a Presidential term, with the main ambassadorial work done by a permanent team of professionals.

Given the hysterical performance of Britain's 'gone native' former EU Ambassador Ivan Rogers (Oxford-educated of course) I'm really not sure which system is better!

And actually... that's not the worst comparison I have heard |

No one is praying for anything to go wrong. We are allowed to have an opinion that isn't "everything will be great."
It's the nature of a democracy that people question the performance of those who represent them and that we look for the best representatives we can. It makes me a bit sad that being a billionaire and a major donor is enough to make you an ambassador to one of the US' biggest allies (and I mean this generally - Obama did the same with his ambassador appointments).
The day we stop questioning the actions of our politicians is the day we don't deserve to be a democracy. |

Some of us understand that unlike the UK where Ambassadors are selected from professionals who have years of training and experience in the Foreign Office Diplomatic Corps. In the USA Ambassadors are political appointment and are handed out in the same way as Knighthoods and gongs are handed out here. Unfortunately unlike a knighthood which is nothing more than an empty title an Ambassador has real power and can damage international relations and therefore it matters who gets the job.
So far I find myself becoming more and more concerned with every new appointment I hear about. The Donald claimed he would clean up the 'Washington Swamp', so far he seems to be filling his administration with the most unsuitable people he can find for every roll. Now I will concede that his every appointment might turn out to be inspired and his Presidency could be a revelation. But I can only judge the man and those he is choosing to surround himself with on their past record, and I would suggest that anyone who refuses to acknowledge those past records because they do not like the implication is seriously deluded and in need of professional help. |
