Back in the 1980s, the use of a new academic term became common among some political scientists when describing the politics of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher: “authoritarian populism” (AP). This term was based on the theory that they and their supporters shared a core set of attitudes: cynicism over human rights, anti-immigration, an anti-EU position in Britain, and favouring a strong emphasis on defence as part of wider foreign policy.
Interesting Yougov analysis.
Some of you won't like it because it involved polling some people to find out what they think and then analysing the result.
Obviously nonsense

"
Your queston was what?
I'm not sure there has to be one does there?
I could write "what are your opinions" but they're usually freely offered "
Then I have no opinion. |

Is that similar to the dictatorship of the abusive, neo-liberal political elite, elected by an undemocratic system, resistant to repairing that broken system, their objectivity and independence of thought dulled by extreme group-think, happy to wallow in a swamp of corruption and contemptuous of the "wrong-headed" opinions of the electorate? |

Dictionary def:
political ideas and activities that are intended to get the support of ordinary people by giving them what they want. |

Giving them what they want? Whatever next? So the people who use the term populism usually use it in a disparaging way because they don't want to give the ordinary people/majority what they want, they want to give them what they think is good for them because they 'know best'. So basically they are against democracy |

That's the dictionary definition and not mine.
And as I say, I like democracy and I use the word.

Did you read post or the analysis?
I haven't been disparaging about anything. The term is Authoritarian Populism which is a compound term.
What is your opinion on what this represents as opposed to populism? Is there a cross-over? Can what the population wants be influenced by what they are told the problems are and how easy solutions may be? |
