I seen to remember, but it was 8 years ago, that when President Obama, was elected, he said "Its time for change"

Can anyone tell me just what he has changed or achieved in the last 8 years ?

The few Americans that I know hate him with a passion. Think he's gearing his wife up for a crack at the Presidency next time round.

obama care was his big hope but from a few people I slighly know there they think its a pretty bad scheme for most, that could be down to the republicans trying to water it down though, I thought he would be a good president but he must have been pretty bad if the yanks elected trump as a result of 8 years of his rule

The answer is probably "not much". He was captured by Goldman Sachs from day one. Obamacare was watered-down at the behest of the private health industry by his own Democrats as well as Republicans. He has introduced ever-wider surveillance laws and increased the use of extra-judicial drone killings and secret incarceration, all of which will be very useful for a future extremist president who wants to destroy any democratic opposition to his/her rule.

In his defence, he has had to contend with a Republican Senate and Congress but all-in-all he is the American Blair, great orator but not really interested in the detail.

As a side note Donald Trump has asked for the bust of Winston Churchill to be returned to the Oval office in the White house which was removed by Obama. Maybe an early indication that Trump will be looking for good strong ties with the UK and could bode well for a good UK/USA trade deal to come in the near future. Prime Minister Teresa May was reported as being delighted at hearing the news about the bust of Winston Churchill being returned to the oval office.

Indeed that is pretty atrocious. And If the question had been 'What has Obama done to cause suffering worldwide" then that would be a fantastic answer. But the question was what has he achieved in 8 years.

Related: maybe we should start a book on how many bombs will be dropped by Trump in the 4 years he will be in office? If he makes it that long.

Well that depends on the approval rating at which point in time. I mean the GW Bush had the highest approval rating... and the lowest approval rating of any president during his time.

Interestingly if you look at the graphs over time of approval rating of each of them:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_approval_rating

Every president except Roosevelt and possibly Clinton as had their approval rating drop over the time they were in office. GW Bush's was pretty catastrophic over time. Obama's dropped a bit to start with, but otherwise has been the most stable over time.

Let's see how Trump does. Considering he already has the one of the lowest transition approval ratings for decades... and his approval rating is lower than Obamas at the moment, he has quite a bit of work to do.

"how many are part time?"

Are you really coming up with that as a way to deny Obama's job creation?

If so, maybe you would like to comment on your defence of the tories counting zero hours contracts as jobs created in the UK?

Or is it one rule for those you support and another for those you oppose?

Those jobs were created UNDER Obama's presidency and not BY Obama thanks to amongst other things a QE stimulus package post a worldwide recession. Just as 16 million jobs were created UNDER Reagan.

The issue especially for Americans appears to be what kind of jobs as most of the above appear to be service jobs. When for example did you last buy something with a Made in the USA label...rather than Made in China etc.!

why would I defend the Tories on that? And what do they have to do with it anyway? If you want another statistic 20 years ago the average household income in America was $54000. Last year it was - $54000

On your first point, doesn't the same logic hold true of any government or leader anywhere?

And in that case should we never look at employment figures again?

As to manufacturing moving overseas, of course it's not good but that's globalisation and neoliberalism for you. For which you can particularly thank Reagan and Thatcher.

the frustrating thing is that the democrats tax and spend and republicans clean up the mess..... but the reality when you look at the numbers is that republican presidents actually raise the debt and democratic presidents actually lower the debt...

if you want to know how much trump's budget plan will add to the debt.... the answer is 3.8 trillion dollars......

You should try to look at things with an open mind and with a broader spectrum. If you think the financial crash of 2008 was bad in this country, you should have seen what happened in the United States. The dramatic increase in the deficit in the US occurred for much the same reasons than it did in the U.K. and at the same time.

West London

His term in office has been variable.

He did inherit the biggest financial crisis in history.

He did extend healthcare to tens trillions of people who had none. It's flawed bit it's not a bad thing to do.

He has been fighting two Republican controlled houses refusing to even do things that they agree with such as infrastructure stimulus.

He inherited a desire from the West not to become involved in any middle eastern conflicts.

He did attempt a reset with Russia which failed when Crimea was invaded.

He brokered a climate change agreement with China when they'd set themselves against it and was instrumental in the Paris accord.

There is a rapprochement with Iran and it seems a hiatus at least of their weapons program.

He was positive and did not single out religions or peoples to blame.

These circumstances also define his failures and there certainly have been failures.

I'd give him a solid B grade.

Some outstanding achievements in foreign policy!?

He abandoned his Libyan Ambassador as did the CIA (which he very clearly successfully managed to politicise) to his fate in Benghazi.

In a last ditch attempt to start a new Cold War before he leaves office Obama has deployed the largest US force (an armoured brigade to Poland) into Europe since... the last Cold War!?

Meanwhile US arms continue to flow into Saudi Arabia...which then passes them on to the Islamic State. And his love for Saudi Arabia (ditto the Clintons) and Islamic 'values' can still be seen in a 2009 Youtube video where he is seen bowing so low to the Saudi King it appears he is trying to kiss his hand. Nauseating display.

Most of the American's I know hold him to some level as a 'lesser of evils', on the better side of that option, mainly for focusing investment into poorer communities and trying to introduce public health care into america, which many in the country greatly need...even if it was watered down by some members of his own party and stone walled by the republicans.

That said, they criticise him where due.

Depending on who you talk to, President Obama added anywhere from $983 billion to $9 trillion to the national debt. Who's lying? None of them. That's because there are three ways to look at the debt added for any President.

The first, and most common, method is to subtract the debt level when he took office from the current debt. The second, and more accurate, method is to add together his projected budget deficits.

The third method is the fairest but is also the most complicated. That is to add only the deficits created by the President's specific initiatives.

The issue is what did they inherit and what have they got control of. US presidents have surprisingly little control without the control of the other two houses, tax changes are very hard to get through.

Trump sits in the position where the republican party has control of the president, and the other two houses, and the Tea party has control over the republican party (along with the Christian far right). Considering the US has been left in a far better state than he found it, he's done a good job. Is it perfect? No.

The man has dignity and class, he made most feel the Nuclear codes were in "safe hands"... He stopped the U.S. from sliding into a depression that was to be worse than the Great Depression of the 30's. Obamacare would have been a success but as stated on other posts it was watered down from both side with too many vested interests in private healthcare companies. Overall I'd consider him a good president but didn't/couldn't live up the the hype surrounding him before he was elected.

Also Trump will be blocked at every turn by Democrats and certain elements in his own party so he won't make any real changes either!

Not quite... he will get the same grace Obama did in the first two years.. which is a republican congress and a republican senate so he will be able to push thru some of his program

The last six years the republicans basically stopped almost every major policy issue Obama wanted to work on.... immigration, gun control, major reform of the debt etc eat ect.....

Trump says President Obama’s irresponsible use of executive orders has paved the way for him to also use them freely.

"I seen to remember, but it was 8 years ago, that when President Obama, was elected, he said "Its time for change"

Can anyone tell me just what he has changed or achieved in the last 8 years ?

Fuck all basically, the guy is a joke. Making his farewell speech today isn't he? Good riddance! "

Yes Obama is good at making speeches, every one of us will recall how he stood and said to all of us in the UK that if we chose Brexit WE WOULD BE AT THE BACK OF THE QUEUE for trade and deals with USA

Now that he is gone, it appears we have moved DIRECT TO THE FRONT OF THE QUEUE

some speeches we will never forget.

In his first UK interview - with former Justice Secretary Michael Gove for the Times - Mr Trump said he thought the UK was "so smart in getting out".

Mr Trump promised a quick trade deal between the US and the UK after he takes office on Friday.

He also criticised "obsolete" Nato and German Chancellor Angela Merkel's immigration policies

Trump is a huge egotist and will say anything to look good. Of course he's going to be positive about the UK when being interviewed. It means pretty much nothing.

So did he actually say that... because it is not in the transcripts of the interview published by the times themselves... in the interview he actually waffles around that specific question

When Gove said "so we are at the front of the queue now".

Trump said the UK is doing great and the UK is in a great position. Add to that the Trump team told foreign secretary Boris Johnson last week on his visit to the states that they want a uk/USA trade deal and fast, within months of Trump taking office.

Just think a tiny bit about the ramifications of what was said.

"Britain was so smart to get out of the EU" Meaning that he doesn't like the EU and would want others to get out. Why? Possibly because it is much more difficult for the US to get a US beneficial trade deal with an economy of equivalent size? If you are a big economy, it is much easier to get preferential terms when dealing with a comparitive minnow.

He didn't actually promise a quick trade deal but it would absolutely be in America's interest to do so. A little bit like a buyer walking up the path of house facing foreclosure and offering the owner a quick deal. I can just imagine BoJo or May having a Neville Chamberlain moment waving a quickly negotiated US/UK trade deal and shouting "trade in our time."

Trump has announced that NATO is obsolete and this was quickly endorsed by Russia who passed the same sentiment. Do you really think that the President elect and leader of the most powerful NATO country should be making comments like that? It is grossly irresponsible.

look if you are going to quote the man at least quote him properly.

He also said "nato is very important to me".

His biggest gripe with Nato is that most of the countries in it are not paying their own way and the US is making up the difference.

Trumps attitude is america first and rightly so, the current NATO as it is now may well be obsolete in trumps eyes.

As far as im concerned Nato have been nothing but americas bully boys since the whole awful "war on terror" began.

You keep stating this and I keep asking the same question, which you have ignored twice so far.

So, for the third time. Do you think it's possible Trump, or his team, would say anything that strengthens his own negotiating position down the line?

Also, do you realise that the UK can't actually enter any new trade deals until it's left the EU?

So, even if Trump is telling the truth for once it's going to be years before its even possible.
