If I were to own a cake shop, and someone came in and ask me to bake a cake that said "Brexit is Wonderful", should I have the right to refuse?

The right? I don't think so. But you could just say your order book was to busy already and that you couldn't.

What a stupid question. You have the right to refuse to do any work for anyone

"What a stupid question. You have the right to refuse to do any work for anyone"

But if you refused for overtly political discrimination you would open yourself up to a court case. But don't worry, the money you would get from the media would cover it easily

Why would you not be able to discriminate based on political opinion?

I mean, if you weren't how would, for example any 'ethical' business exist if they were not able to pick and choose who they want as their customers? I'm pretty sure if I tried to open a bank account for my conflict diamonds and arms trade business then someone like Triodos bank would rightly refuse my business as that doesn't align with their political views.

I like the question. Good reference to the political reference topic.

It's a difficult question. As an outsider you'd probably not care and say it's the business's right. If it's discriminates your belief, then as a victim of it you'd be offended. So as a meat eater if a vegetarian cafe doesn't give me meat, I'd be disappointed.

It is your businness so it is your choice .The customer can simply take his order elsewhere .

We live in a society where there is freedom of choice .

I guess you would refuse.

Yep...

Everyone has the right to refuse to serve anyone without giving a reason.

They just don't have the right to discriminate on grounds of race, nationality, sex, sexuality or political views.

So if you want to discriminate, just do it but don' tell anyone why your doing it or you will be in trouble!

They were not sued for refusing to bake a cake, they were sued because they said it was against their religious convictions to write something on the cake. I know it is splitting hairs, but it is an important hair, to refuse to do business with someone is not illegal, to refuse to do business for discriminatory reasons is.
