Respect? Nah. I quite like him for his eccentricities but his party and their politics are despicable.

And that comes from a Brexiter.

As much as I disagree with how he delivered brexit, and that poster, UKIP's policies - basically I dont like him and disagree with him a lot.

He is entertaining. And I can respect him in terms of how he and his party have changed the political landscape and given people a way to really air their concerns/give the middle finger to westminster.

My main issue is now UKIP , which campaigned on democracy. Is now doing what all politicians do. They are interpreting a vote as a green light for what they want. If they truely believed in democracy they would pick apart the vote to see what people want.

In short I respect them and him, mainly for doing what many lefties have tried to do, which is give people a way to say politics isnt working for the majority, and because the left and centre needs to respect him. I just disagree with the policies and mechanisms.

I doubt it! Devolution, minimum wage, independence of the bank of England, peace in northern Ireland, tax credits, economic growth, all achieved by Blair's governments. Farage is simply a horrid little man who has done nothing but stir up hatred and xenophobia in this country.

I'd agree with your assessment there. Farage has achieved his and Ukip's main aim of getting Britain to leave the EU, against all the odds, all the main parties being against him and for the most part all of the media were against him too. What he has achieved in politics really is incredible, and will go down in history as one of the most important political figures in British political history for campaigning to get Britain out of the EU and then playing a big part in achieving that goal. If it wasn't for Farage and Ukip we wouldn't have had an EU referendum. Yes Farage has his faults but so does everyone. Personally I'd like to see Farage given a knighthood for what he has done for this country.

Literally true.

He's managed to convince us to becone champions of free trade by, er, leaving the world's biggest free trade bloc.

He's managed to convince us that you don't need to be modern and outgoing but can retreat into some fantasy Xanadu of british greatness.

Knighthood? Bloody hell, he's done more to harm the UK than the IRA!

the comparison is a naive one, Blair (usual stipulation not my favourite PM) won 3 elections and yes as well as the above there is also the mistakes he made..

Farage will only be a success depending on how things pan out which not even the most ardent kipper can predict..

too soon to judge him with any substantial evidence..

Farage will only be judged well if the whole leaving the EU experiment goes well. If it goes wrong...trade slumps more unemployment then he will be remembered as a shyster millionaire who convinced the nations poor he was on there side...Then fucked off as soon as he realised he had "Won "

Pretty much.

Don't forget the whole, if nothing really changes in terms of employment and living standards, but he basically divided society down to the family level, created tensions nationally and internationally, added to the national debt and created a load of nonobjective faff, then he'll be perceived as a marmite figure in short term history.

He has, objectively, achieved a historic change that will have significant long-term international consequences.

It's only possible to understand the consequences of this in retrospect.

Do I respect him for this. Not really. He has used any means, told any lie, divided this country and possibly a continent. This has been done not achieve anything really important like freedom from famine or violence or slavery. Just old fashioned nationalism.

Fair assessment. I respect him on the basis that he is potentally a divisive figure who is a bit like political herpes. He comes and goes, and whether we like it or not, he can stir up emotions. He needs to be respected as a driving political force. But not as someone who has of yet achieved something great.

Yes, I'd agree with most of that, although it was Gordon Brown who thought it was OK to leave incredible amounts of PFI debt to later generations so that he could claim to be reducing government debt. There are not too many things Labour can accuse the Tories of doing that they didn't enthusiastically indulge in themselves under Blair/Brown.

As for Farage. Yes he will be in the history books but history is written by the winners so we will have to wait a generation to know who that is.
