This phrase, used on another thread, is lost on me .... I assume it's something political ... is it a reference to people who get benefits? Does it have racist undertones? I don't get it ....

Well this is the original quote

"Not sure on your nationality. Perhaps Slavic. After a while, all cupped hands look the same"

Can you tell a person's nationality by their posts?

Not everyone can, but I understand that Jingoists have mastered the skill.....

I can totally tell when I need to, and by accents and sentence structure, but on here I don't bother, to be honest as it doesn't matter to me here .... I think some people think they are more astute than they actually are though

Apparently UKIP recently sent out a guide to 'Recognising Johnny Foreigner when you come across one on the internet' pamphlet to its members......it came with a form to report foreigner activity as well

I wonder if this little tip can from that guide:

"Saw them in tesco last week, you can always tell an eastern European by they're shopping basket.... It's always full of fresh food and never a frozen pizza in sight."

If is the definition then that makes me an Eastern European...

Then to be fair I have to admit to being first generation offspring of immigrants (my father was born in Dublin and my mother in a little village on the Cork Kerry border.

Is it a reference to begging? Definitely reads like a xenophobic comment.

Well next time your wandering have a look round at all the different baskets by all the different people, it's fascinating to spot the differences..... It's not sweeping it's just a generalisation of course like saying men are from Mars women are from Venus

the lack of consumerism is quite fascinating to observe, old fashioned clothing, haircuts, even the musical taste..... It's like going back to 1985!.

Which is good coz I liked 1985

I dont go shopping, we do it all online, but I must confess to looking in people's recycling bins (not rooting through them) when passing. All I seem to notice is the amounts of alcohol people consume. Its an interesting one and a good reason to go shopping ... I like it. There are a lot of Polish shops in our area, so this may skew the sample.
