I am increasingly demoralised about the standard of posts in this forum.
It was moved out of the Lounge because it became so nasty.
It now seems to be in the same / worse sad state of affairs.
It is supposed to be a forum where people can sensibly debate issues.
All too often, posts deteriorate into nasty slander and abusive generalisations.
In everyday life, I've chatted happily with lots of people from different backgrounds and walks of life on all sorts of subjects. Never in those conversations, regardless of peoples opinions, have conversations degenerated to the level they go to on this forum.
Is it possible for people to read another persons post and think about what they are saying? Instead of posting anything to 'win the argument' ??
This isn't heated debate, it's aggressive, close minded and stubborn.
Also ask why there are so few people from the site in general post here. Well, it's because it is the most hostile of all the forums.
Please try to respect other peoples opinions and keep the discussions civil, or this forum will wither further. |

Agreed.
The problem is, just as it was easy to be brave behind a castle wall, it's easy to be angry, verbally aggressive and abusive behind a computer screen to someone you will most likely never have to confront in person. |

Yeah I don't think it's a problem just this forum suffers from, I'm new on here but I've posed in forums for years and it always goes the same way. I think if heated debates are to take place they should be refreed. It sound stupid but a impartial 3rd party often helps. |

It's easy to start off nice, but being told to shut up and stop moaning isn't very nice, neither is being told that you aren't allowed to comment on a subject based on the race of one half of the couple, or when people play dumb and pretend they don't understand the basics of what we are talking about, or people who deny simple, proven facts. After a while it can get very tiresome. |

I've never seen any comment on any thread mentioning CC in any way. If they did that in any negative they, they deserve any site user comments / admin reprimand that's coming.
I'm not saying you are the only person who does this, because your main adversaries are just as bad. You do have a tendency to fall back to implying very negative stereotypes on those who don't share your opinion. I know others do similar to you, and they need to reign it in also.
My point is that people who are capable should rise above that nonsense and keep on track with a sensible discussion.
The trolls and haters will still come, but don't feed them.
This might also encourage a wider cross-section join in these discussions.

Just a couple of days ago this was posted on a thread replying to my post.
"
Not being rude, but with a Thai bride, this isn't a debate you can take an impartial position on, so everything you say is going to be heavily biased in favour of PC culture/liberalism and you will just dismiss all counter arguments. " "
And just look at this thread to see how friendly people are towards other people. |

I agree, unacceptable comment. Should not be made - report it.
Just by way of quick example, in todays 'no plan' thread you have said
"
Obviously Brexitiers are happy with simply "brexit means brexit", perhaps any more details than that would be too complicated for them to understand?
"
Over the last few days you've implied racism, lack of intelligence and thugism. I am none of those things and find it being implied over and over by 'intelligent' people is unacceptable.
I don't like things people people have said to you. But why lash out at everybody when only 1 or 2 are saying those things?
This thread isn't about knocking you personally. It's to lots of people saying, look let's take a step back from confrontation and lazy name calling and try to engage in a sensible discussion.
That's it. |

A few observations on this phenomenon:
* it is telling that politics has been banished down here.
* some people can't play nice without shouting down opinions they don't like.
* it becomes a platform for trolls who don't engage in debate but use it as a means to upset others.
* the continued hectoring - "I'm right/you're wrong/pathetic/should get over it" - does nothing to solve the problems faced by our society.
* this is revealing of a new type of political discussion - and it is no coincidence that "Post-truth politics" has been named the OED's phrase of the year.

I don't know whether this is a reflection of changes in society as a whole, or just that keyboard warriors have more of a platform on t'internet.
I wonder if any of the usual suspects might venture an opinion?

Agree with the OP..
in saying that i'm aware that I may have crossed the line with another poster when they have given me the ache so hands up ..
I said before the Brexit vote that afterwards there will need to be calm heads to look at and debate whatever will come along..
I pretty much knew it was pissing in the wind but said it anyway..
many user's and contributors to politics etc when it was in the lounge have now decided that this forum is a less than welcoming place and it has turned nasty at times..
maybe its time we all took a minute, looked at ourselves and where needed take a reality check..

Why bother?
Just keep shouting and claiming that everything will be fine/like a Hieronymus Bosch painting?
You don't have to think anymore; that's the joy of politics.

Sure, debate what they say, or pull them up if they are out of order. All I'm saying is people should back away from spiraling downwards. |

Politics was not pulled from the lounge because of the nature of the debates. It was at request because it was filling up the lounge during the Brexit campaigns.
Oh, and I like the passion shown here - and, of course, the irony of some of the most passionate objecting. |

The fun is that so many posts get off subject.
It is human nature. Don't you think it might be a bit flat otherwise? |

Just scanned through on BBC, looks like normal foolishness from both of them, and why I guess only 1% of people will bother to watch or listen to them.
Luckily we have got jobs where we can just do this out of interest and don't have to try and defeat each other. |

positions on some issues are just so entrenched that people actually don't want to listen and have a conversation, they just want to points score....
and rather than having a conversation they just want to attack the poster behind them...
i am not here as often as i was because quite frankly it got dull i am here for fun, rather than gaining people who stalk every single post

im not sure weather we are in a world where peoplehave lost the art of debatting or that many people have the means to debate but know not how to.
one example was 909 5 live. she got angry in a debate about brexit being debated in parliment calling the other man as berliterling her after he had used logic and legal words to form an argument. |

I don't think it is hate. Mistrust maybe, not hate.
I certainly don't hate anyone, especially people I've never met in person.
Someone stated earlier about in person debates never descending to the level some on here have. I agree. I've certainly gotten caught up in a sticks and stones spat, which I didn't intend. That is life though I suppose. |

This is often the reason I don't join in debates. People in the real world say I'm intelligent, I'm not sure if that's true.
I'm not a graduate and I have 'cognitive issues'.
It's tedious to see how many debates, from people on various parts of the political spectrum, resort to labelling an opponent as dim or thick. |

So you are trying to argue that simple concepts, are actually complicated concepts, and that's why people can't understand them, because they are too complicated for them? So again, what do you call those people? |

"You people are proving the OP's point"
The OP who says things like "It's like having an argument with the snotty know-it-all kid at school, normally sat at the front, sneering assuming he is more intelligent than everyone else, occasionally snitching to teacher, who also thinks he's a dick." |

Well, it is quite a lot like a playground with some very loud people thinking that all they have to do is shout and shove and not listen to anyone else. It's a valid metaphor.
.
If you were to ask a question in another forum on a matter if love, life or perversion I doubt it would descend into the usual (pointless, lightless) conflict about who's a typical fucking Guardian reader or redneck racist.
That kind of discourse only exists here.
That should tell you something |

"I used to be that people could debate the issues on the forum, but not anymore obviously if the posts from the OP are anything to go by
Debate doesn't normally include regular implications that the other people in it aren't intelligent enough to take part.
Just have a look back through and tot up how many times you say it.
What do you call people who cant comprehend simple concepts? "
On another thread you have , as usual, implied I and others have limited intelligence. I walked away from that thread. Your reaction has been to come on this thread and re-iterate a similar claim.
You know nothing about me, my education, intelligence or ability with complex concepts. I'm not getting into a tit-for-tat about it.
Your attitude is awful.

All I did was ask if you understood a concept. Obviously you didn't. Now you're throwing your toys out the pram. |

No , it was
'what do you call people who can't undésatnd simple concepts'
And in the thread in question
'Or, maybe the words Im using are too complex or complicated for some forumites? '
These are daily digs, when you dont like the answers.
You dont like debate, you like talking at people - in my simplistic opinion. |

I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.... this person couldn't understand a simple question I asked, even admitting to not understanding, or misinterpreting, the question....
They also quoted Steve Keen as one of their experts.... not knowing that Steve Keen, a very well respected economist, is pro-Brexit. |

What do you call people who cant comprehend simple concepts? A simple complex may be classed as complex by another poster who has analysed the simple complex in more detail or has a better working knowledge of it .
It is never acceptable to call anyone stupid , it is offensive and objectionable .
In any event calling people stupid is a reflection on the author of the post , not the recipient or the group described.
Do you mean simple "concept", because you have written "simple complex" which is an oxymoron. Apologies I mean concept .
So you are trying to argue that simple concepts, are actually complicated concepts, and that's why people can't understand them, because they are too complicated for them? So again, what do you call those people? " Is there any need to call them anything ?. |
