How will Ms May's Government deliver the promises made to Nissan in order to get them to announce their latest investment?

Does anyone really believe the the EU will not have something to say about this?

Personally I think it is nothing more than tilting at windmills and that the British people will end up paying a heavy price for this piece of political manoeuvring.

It looks like our government have promised Nissan that there will be no change in the terms that govern the movement of cars from the UK into the rest of the EU.

I believe that is what is now refereed to as a soft BREXIT.

I expect that many of those who want a hard BREXIT will find that a betrayal.

They certainly won't if it means free movement....

Newcastle and Gateshead

The Tory minister said he wrote to Nissan with a series of four assurances as he went “all out” to allay concerns about Brexit, promising the government was confident of getting a deal that would mean the whole car industry remained competitive.

“Our intention, our negotiating remit, when it comes to the discussions with our European partners is to have a constructive dialogue and look for the common interest here,” Clark told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show.

if that is the "aim"..... what happens if the UK doesn't get it in the final deal? does this mean nissan has to be compensated?

By getting 'the best possible deal'? Clever wording, whatever deal eventually arrives it meets this statement.

Can't see Nissan staying long term, doesn't matter how productive you are if you can't have free access to Europe. Sunderland had large Brexit majority, turkeys voting for Christmas!

I’m sure they factored this in when making their decision.

Indeed I wouldn’t be suprised if they think they’d get the money anyway given how sensitive the NE would be to job losses ...

Are you not able to see over the horizon? Just think it through... Japan and the EU have just signed a detailed FTA which cannot be bettered by anything that the UK can have with Japan. There is no long term need for any Japanese manufacturer to produce goods for use in Japan or the EU in a high-cost economy that is outside of either Japan or the EU.

That direction of travel is now inevitable and the reason that car manufacturing failed previously in the UK is that it is not cost effective to build solely for the UK market.

As was mentioned on the other thread, I dont see car manufacturers immediately upping sticks but the start will be an invisible impact in as much as the UK will just be ignored for future investment, next comes re-investment as jigs and production lines and/or models approach the end of their life and Companies then wind down that production. It starts with no future investment, and no new jobs (but fortunately no immediate job lossess). Then comes gradual redundancies as production lines slow down and finally come the closures.

Perhaps you could come up with a simple and coherent argument as to why there would be future investments in the UK car manufacturing industry? It seems like a secret £80 million bung from the Government was not enough for Nissan.

If you look at the letter leaked to the FT - the one the Tories went to great lengths to keep secret - it basically promises Nissan that their trade with the EU on the day we leave will be exactly the same as the day before.

Now, Nissan isn't saying it's down to Brexit, only that it's a factor.

It's a bit of a no-brainer - cars made in Japan soon will be exported tariff free to the EU, whereas cars made in the UK will . . . well, who knows.

" To produce as many cars as it does, Lawther explained, Nissan Sunderland needs to receive and fit 5m parts each day. Of these parts, 85% are imported, mainly from Europe. The plant holds only enough parts for half a day’s production, because it is expensive to store them, so the whole multi-billion pound operation relies on these millions of parts arriving daily with no barriers or customs delays.

Because Britain is currently part of the EU, this is a straightforward process. Each of the 28 EU member states belongs to the single market, which has been designed to facilitate trade by removing tariffs, as well as other trade and customs barriers. Rather than having 28 different industrial safety regulations, for instance, there is a single set of regulations that applies across all member states. The single market means trade between 28 different countries is free, fast and “frictionless”, just as it would be if the EU were one very large country. “Frictionless trade has enabled the growth that has seen our Sunderland plant become the biggest factory in the history of the UK car industry, exporting more than half of its production to the EU,” Nissan said, in a statement for this article."

It goes on

" If Britain leaves the EU without securing an agreement for continued frictionless trade – the “hard Brexit” outcome – Britain’s trading relationships would be regulated by World Trade Organisation rules, which do not allow for agreed product standards, and therefore will require customs checks at the borders with Europe. The rules also impose tariffs, including 10% on cars, 4.5% on car parts. For Nissan’s Sunderland operation, Lawther told the committee, as well as likely new delays at the borders, the impact of tariffs will add up to around £500m per year of additional costs, which would be “pretty disastrous”."

So what buisness do you know that can sustain an extra half a billion quid a year in running costs , without losing jobs ?

Can you really not see the potential negative impact on the U.K. of one of the most all encompassing free trade agreements ever agreed between the EU and Japan?

What purpose is the U.K. now for future investment from any Company that is looking to sell into the EU or Japan?

It seems to me that Brexit ideology is driving this country to a really dangerous place. A place where denial of the obvious is all that is needed to “survive”

It's not going to be outdated though is it because they're still going to build the new version of the Quashqai there.

The decision to drop the X-trail is because no one wants to buy Diesel vehicles anymore, especially now as the UK government want to hike tax on Diesel vehicles and new EU environment rules on Diesel emissions are going kill off sales of Diesel in the EU. The X-trail is not going to be profitable either in the UK or in the EU.

The xtrail isn't a huge seller in Europe or the UK so why build it in the UK or Europe. The xtrail has a diesel motor and diesel isn't the flavour of the month fuel anymore in the European utopia. So Nissan are well within there rights to produce where it seems more viable for them.

The X Trail is the biggest selling SUV in the world and it has a number of different engine configurations that vary according to the market. Nissan also have leading edge engine technology that has enable it to adapt and develop new motors for existing vehicle lines and for new vehicle production.

Isn't now a good time to spend some of that 39 billion on something else, why not an all electric vehicle company.

Ps all those 70s Talbots were Chrysler and Peugeot owned and designed, Austin and Morris built fantastic cars for 80 years before being bought out by BMC but even they were gone before the 70s.

British Leyland should have stuck to trucks and buses which they weren't too bad at alas they acquired rover and diverged into cars.

The Japanese have a knack of building good cars but they're designs are a bit shite.

The Germans have a knack of making great cars as well but then you over did it by putting the Italians and Americans in there and let's not even get started on French cars there the fucking pits.

But yes if the French can get by making God awful Citroen's Peugeots and Renaults I can't see why we couldn't make a half assed attempt at it ourselves.

They recently announced they will be creating 800 new jobs in the UK on research and development, and new sales teams at new dealerships and showrooms they are building. McLaren are now focusing on hybrid cars for the future. Telling that McLaren don't make Diesels, lol, it appears now Diesel is a thing of the past and Diesel sales are failing all over the world. Hybrid and electric is where the car industry needs to move to in order to have a future, or Hydrogen zero emissions cars which Honda and Toyota are developing.

Low end of the market, what makes you think most ordinary working class folk can afford a brand spanking new Nissan fresh off the production line? Buying a brand new car of any brand is a pipe dream for the majority of ordinary folk. Most people buy 2nd hand used cars.

As for the jobs market as a whole in the UK I suggest you take a look at the latest government employment figures. Employment is at an all time high in the UK and unemployment is at its lowest level since the 1970's.

“Low end of the market”

They still employ 6,700 people directly and as many more indirectly in Sunderland, when the factory is wound down, those workers will never be able to afford a new Nissan, and maybe not even a second hand Dacia,

And while a brand new car is a pipe dream to lots, those who do buy brand new, are creating a second hand market when they upgrade!!

Figures show 1,332,952 three-day emergency food supplies delivered to people in crisis in past year – a 13 per cent increase on last year, compared with rise of 6 per cent year before

The number of households in England staying in temporary accommodation has risen by 6% over the past year, figures have shown.

Statistics from the Department for Communities and Local Government show that nearly 80,000 households, including more than 120,000 children, were homeless in September.

Your Government manipulated employment figures are laughable.

Its been a ploy used by the Tories for 50 years

In the meantime 120000 kids in temporary accomadation

Over 4000 children in London & the South East are homeless.

Brexit was meant to make stuff better.

Banks are moving offices out

Buisnesses are desperate to get away

Dyson last week , wait for more to follow the closer Brexit day comes.

Still , you keep telling yourself things will be better nwhen the UK leaves .

And while a brand new car is a pipe dream to lots, those who do buy brand new, are creating a second hand market when they upgrade!!"

It's not just rich individuals who buy brand new cars though is it. A good bulk of new cars sold straight out the factory are to businesses and companies to be used as company cars which are bought with company cash. These businesses and companies then sell the cars on to the 2nd hand car market at vastly reduced price after a few years devaluation and use by the company.

It's all good.

The beat time to maximise uncertainty for a major domestic industry is when it is dealing with major disruption to it's previous long-term model and just before a global recession is about to take hold.

They will definitely choose to invest heavily here rather than at home or in the largest regional market which will not attract any tariffs.

Failing that we can use our Brexit dividend money to create a new car company from scratch after spending the same money on education, the NHS, defence, regional development and national infrastructure.

A point was made about 800 new jobs in McLaren

McLaren are a Luxury Brand.

Stop diluting stupid arguments about not many people can afford new cars.

This isnt about all cars.

Why are so many new cars produced every damn year if not many people are not buying new ones ?

A large section of the car market is driven by companies leasing vehicles not buying them then once the leases are up the cars end up on the 2nd hand nearly new car garage's that cheap finance then enables the average Jo to go and buy.

"The xtrail isn't a huge seller in Europe or the UK so why build it in the UK or Europe.

The X-trail was actually the 11th most popular SUV in 2018, down from 9th place in 2017.

If it had a future in Europe, why haven't Nissan switched production to one of its other European production facilities?

McClaren are a high end manufacturer that don’t rely (afaik) on JIT. Their clients are less price sensitive than Nissan

If any uk car company is immune to brexit it is then.

And if they can ride this out, youbhave ti ask why we thing BMW would panic so much as we think to persuade the Germans to cave in.

Oh and they are still saying we should listen to car manufacturers concerns.

This is accurate. All the negative stuff that’s engulfing the country at the moment has multiple factors. Brexit being one of the major ones. It’s hard to measure how much of a factor.

When a company leaves to move elsewhere and they cite Brexit as a reason for leaving, it’s not the sole reason.

The UN Paris Climate Conference in 2017, coupled with the 2018 EU Directives on clean air, has seen a rush of cities wanting to ban diesel cars within a few years.

Copenhagen, Madrid, Athens, Oxford and Paris are leading the charge. Other cities plan to further tax diesel cars and vans.

With this atmosphere, there is little appetite for diesel cars and vans.

If you can afford to buy a McLaren, an extra 10 per cent on the price is probably loose change. Not exactly a good example of how Brexit will measurably improve the average Joe’s quality of life.

But this isn’t new news. The EU directive was off the back of previous directives etc. Cities have been thinking about banning diesel for a while. This could have all been anticipated in 2016.

U less we’re suddenly saying the Eu juggernaut can suddenly pull directives out of the hat ?

I believe the UK has set a date of 2040 to outlaw the sale of fossil fuel engines in vehicles. Petrol and diesel. France similarly.

So as far as I can see, the new X-Trail is/was going to be a diesel hybrid engine. Same as the engines that will now be allowed within the central London clean air zone...

I think there maybe a bit more to this story than meets the eye.

From what I've seen from data over the last few days, Xtrail sales in europe last year fell by 30%, from 69,000 to 48,000.

XTrail sales across the rest of the world are rising. Xtrail /Rogue volumes were 814,000 around the world. Its biggest single market is Asia.

You are only listing the reasons it is not.

You have never written anywhere on any thread any points that acknowledge any problems with Brexit. Neither do the other leavers.

It's impossible to admit any flaw in the Brexit master-plan.

I'm quite happy to say that corruption and sudden immigration have caused problems that need fixing.

Emotional arguments there are plenty of but leavers don't like to make those as they don't sound that compelling when you try to explain their benefit.

I'm quite happy to say that the darkening economy also have a part to play in Nissan's decision.

I'll look forward to you being more even handed in your posts in the future.

I will attempt to do the same but am struggling with logical pro-leave arguments. I wrote down what I came up with in the cognitive bias thread some time ago. You are still free to start a thread that lays out leave problems and remain benefits for your own benefit. You only argue your point by trying to understand your opponent.

You couldn't put anything tangible as to why the EU are so desperate for us to stay on another thread....other than 'traits' that the UK have.....which, at the end of the day, are emotional arguments."

You were hardly clear in what you were asking for on that thread. I don't really understand why you don't believe that the positive traits that I listed are not hugely influential and positive in shaping policy? Regardless, I added more when you clarified.

I note that you immediately jumped onto my shortcomings without addressing what I said.

"From what I've seen from data over the last few days, Xtrail sales in europe last year fell by 30%, from 69,000 to 48,000.

XTrail sales across the rest of the world are rising. Xtrail /Rogue volumes were 814,000 around the world. Its biggest single market is Asia.

Yes. It's all fine. There's nothing to learn or consider at all.

Just ignore it. It will all be fine. In fact, it's really good news. Sounds like it was a rubbish car and nobody would have been interested in those 200 extra jobs as we are awash with them.

Or altermatively let's blame everything on Brexit....

I never have.

You could also acknowledge that it is a significant factor, amongst other significant factors.

What is true for Nissan is true for Honda and Toyota.

Where have I said it's not a factor?

You are only listing the reasons it is not.

You have never written anywhere on any thread any points that acknowledge any problems with Brexit. Neither do the other leavers.

It's impossible to admit any flaw in the Brexit master-plan.

I'm quite happy to say that corruption and sudden immigration have caused problems that need fixing.

Emotional arguments there are plenty of but leavers don't like to make those as they don't sound that compelling when you try to explain their benefit.

Um. No. It's a completely different exercise to look at your own opinions rather than point out flaws in other peoples'.

Do you really not see that?

We're not here to do your exercises. This is not a classroom and we're not at school.

You've ably demonstrated that you don't like thinking too hard and certainly can't manage self-criticism.

You crack on in your own bubble and keeping repeating your newspaper headlines and catchphrases.

The method does work. The problem is delivering on the promises. Fortunately your process also pre-prepares scapegoats so all good

Shame you've already been schooled a few times on the thread and chose not to reply to the posts contradicting those ridiculous statements about WTO tarriffs, lies told to Nissan, and my favourite Mclaren the peoples car for the average Joe
