Which do you think they will go for? Will the government stick to collective cabinet responsibility, or let ministers campaign against it?

Either way it needs to be carried out as soon as is possible, I think they are certain to go for Heathrow though.

I thought the government had already announced a free vote?

Why not Heathrow and Gatwick?

Why would we need more capacity do you think? Don't you keep saying the country is doomed?

Because the demand from people from the more affluent London and South East of the country is such that it's needed....that and the fact that London is the financial hub of Europe.

Let's face it you don't need airport expansion up there in Scotland as its only needed in areas of economic growth.....

what flavour of sauce would you like on your last post?

The Scottish government has said it is backing the plan to add a third runway at London's Heathrow airport.

The project has been heavily debated for a number of years, but Scottish ministers have said it offers significant strategic and economic benefits for Scotland.

The government said this would include up to 16,000 new jobs.

Heathrow Airport and the Scottish government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

This will highlight a number of commitments by Heathrow Airport, including the new jobs.

If the expansion goes ahead, about £200m would be spent on construction in Scotland, £10m for new domestic routes, and there would be a commitment to investigate Prestwick Airport as a potential site for a logistics hub to support the building of the third runway.

Keith Brown, the cabinet secretary for economy, jobs and fair work, told BBC Radio Scotland that it was the "best deal for Scotland".

Zac Goldsmith has resigned as a Tory MP over it too, triggering a bi election where he will now stand as an independent.

It's been decided, Heathrow it is. Now all the experts are saying it will generate £211 billion for the UK economy. That fantasy £65 billion figure (which you often like to use) George Osborne came out with, which he said would be the cost of us leaving the EU suddenly doesn't look very big compared to the £211 billion growth figure does it OP?

Guess it will go some way to plugging the gap left when all the banks move to Frankfurt or the likes of Nissan move to Europe x

With all due respect the £211 Billion figure is as factious as as the £65 Billion. It has no meaning or weight until it materialises. In my opinion the decision is a cop out. Instead of two major airports we will have one major airport and one satellite one. Tho of course this only my opinion.

Neither!! Planes flying half full, plus the freight planes are hugely polluting for the limited cargo they carry. Better off on a train/ship.

Very few planes fly into or out of Heathrow half full, that's why expansion is needed, Heathrow is a major connecting hub for airlines from around the world.

I do not like Tory Eaton posh boys (or for that matter most of the other) 'career politicians' who populate Westminster (open secret). However I have to say Zack Goldsmith has gone up in my estimation with his immediate resignation on a point of principle.

A refreshing change from the the norm.

It's totally staged.....the clue is in the fact that the Conservatives won't challenge the seat.

Give it six months and Goldsmith will rejoin the Tories

Is he going to stand as an independent?

If that is correct it is a new low in voter manipulation.
