Lib Dems cut Conservative majority from 25,000 votes to 5,000 and also leapfrogged Labour who came a dismal third.
Lib Dem share of the votes up from 7% to 30% whilst the conservative share slumped from 60% to 45%.
Yes, it is still a Conservative seat but with a massively reduced majority despite David Cameron and Theresa May both campaigning heavily for the conservative candidate.
Question is then - Is this a resurgence of the Lib Dems or is it a rejection of Theresa Mays conservatism by floating conservatives? |

It's still only 15% drop though Lib-Dems are just too watery to get anywhere |

Plus labour and the Tories are both shit so who's left!.

I'm thinking of starting my own party in these crazy days called the right wing green liberal slightly left of centre don't really care about brexit party...
I might shorten it to something catchy like mad dogs and Englishmen  |

I think it's a little telling but only in short term politics - eg, if there are major party policy changes across the board the result of this might be pointless.
The way I look at it is, as a seat in the South East a lot o jobs will be tied to the City of London, people will be worried about the lack of communication from gov ministers to parliament and the public in regards to brexit.
Lib dems are seen as the more pro-eu party which could be a vehicle for votes so it could well be a vote to say, basically, stop being so secretive and autocratic.
On the other hand, and maybe more so, labour voters in conservative seat probably want a more left center labour party, and I think the lib dem policies are closer to that than hat labour is offering or perceived to have offered. So many people on the left and right might be going t the centre out of fear of hard right and left parties. |

Given there wasn't anything similar happening in the other seats that were being contested it's possible the Lib Dem candidate just happens to be seen as far better than anything else on offer. |
