UK will be first for trade deal - Donald Trump adviser

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Britain will be offered a free trade deal before the rest of the European Union if the Republicans win the US presidential election, Donald Trump's trade adviser has said.

Dan DiMicco said Britain was "a friend" of America and was leaving the EU for the right reasons.

Both presidential candidates say they are against present plans for a free trade deal between the US and Europe.

Mr DiMicco called for an overhaul of the global free trade system.

"These are not idle threats," he told the BBC.

"Things have gotten so bad that we will leave Nafta [the North American Free Trade Agreement], WTO [the World Trade Organization] and the Korean Free Trade Agreement if we can't get a fair deal

think this will happen

And "THIS" is the trump headline you really want to choose today.....

Sure............

Really sure.........

Oooooook

Can I honestly man to man ask you a question?

( just between us... no one else is looking).....

After the "other" stuff that came out last night.... where is the line where even you have to say that trump is a step too far?

I know you hate Hillary so not asking you to switch, just asking you if anything can get you to "trump is not fit to be president either!"

I think a lot of people and republicans finally got to that point last night....

Watched a section about this on BBC 2 newsnight last night. Hillary Clinton is so bad and despised so much that even when Trump keeps dropping all these clangers she still can't get a clear lead in the polls.

Trump knew it all along but i think it is dawning on Clinton now too how popular the Brexit vote was amongst a good proportion of the American public. I think even Clinton now realises it will be easier for the USA to do a trade deal with a newly independent UK, than it will be for them to get any kind of trade deal with the EU.

Trump is obviously a man who believes in free trade so much, he is going to pull out of 3 free trade agreements and can a 4th.

Trump's open admiration of Putin is the biggest worry for me personally, just how much of Europe is Trump willing to sit and watch swallowed up by Russia if he becomes President?

Well if you like undemocratic, authoritarian, bullies who murder and intimidate their opposition, invade and undermine their neighbours and down civilian airlines with SAM missiles then Putin's (and his poodles Trump & Farage) is probably your sort of man.

Personally I think true leadership doesn't come from acting like a strong man while actually pandering to the most base, populist, nationalist and xenophobic instincts of your electorate, but by acting like a statesman who puts the real interests of their country and its people before their own self advancement.

But then I'm a democrat (with a small 'd')

Announced today by Donald Trump at the G20 meeting that the UK and the USA can do a trade deal very quickly together. The political will is clearly there on both sides of the Atlantic from Britain and the USA to get this done and this shows the EU we have other options available. Bring it on the sooner we are out of the EU and can start signing these new trade deals the better.

Well considering Donnie has not managed to achieve a single one of his stated aims so far, I can't possibly see why this would be any different.

Oh, wait, sorry I stand corrected, after 3 attempts he has managed to get his Muslim ban in force.

"Every time the country gets a smidgen of good news a fucking remainer squashes it ffs "

no.... pointing out what was actually said!!!

so IF we already have a trade surplus with the US about 2.5 larger than what is coming in.... just how much better is this super duper trade deal suppose to be?

so if by what you mean by "fairer" it ends up costing jobs and money to the UK economy... that is a sacrifice you are prepared to make?

I'll give you a real world example.....

at the moment most meat and dairy from US is banned from coming into the EU, because it is filled with steroids and antibiotics......

the us want that lifted..... does that now go as part of this deal?

the US insurance and healthcare companies want to come in an take over parts of the NHS..... they wanted it as of TATP.... do they get now get access as part of this deal?

we are going to have to give up something... and from the people who expect to "get everything and give up nothing" from an EU deal.... I think its a bit rich

That is because Trump's idea of a deal is that he wins and the other person loses. Andnloses badly. He specifically talks about this in his book and has boasted about it numerous times.

That is very different to wanting something mutually beneficial to both parties.

Trumps exact words were "a very powerful trade deal" between the UK and the USA which will be signed "very, very quickly" after Brexit. As you mention "free trade" though the Australian Prime minister said today in London that he will not muck about and wants a "Free trade deal" signed "speedily" after Brexit between the UK and Australia.

you see this is where the EU has been going all wrong, they are wasting years talking to other countries. When we finally throw off the yoke of oppression we will be able to do FTAs in double quick time by just writing the agreement as we want it and simply posting a copy to the relevant country. No need for negotiations, we will just tell them the terms and they will accept it because we are Britain!

It's what Theresa May thinks as she said it today in the House of Commons. As the UK is a member of the EU at present then those countries are already trading with the UK. Trade deals with those countries can be signed very quickly on the same terms which currently exist.

No they cant. Its not possible to just copy and paste the terms over because no other country is going to agree to that and there would be plenty of parts that wouldnt be applicable.

If Canada makes concessions on wine which will mostly be imported from Spain/France/Italy because Germany is going to be a big market for maple syrup, why would they make the same concessions to British winemakers when they already got the market they want?

And why would any country make the same concessions for a much smaller market?

The only way to keep the EU agreements is to stay in the customs union. And that means keeping the ECJ and delaying formal trade negotiations.

At least May and Davis seem to have realised, albeit very very slowly, that the time left isnt long enough and Britain needs to have a transitional agreement. Her defacto deputy today even conceded that and that the ECJ will be around after 2019.

Hope youve got that champagne on ice Centaur because you wont be cracking it open in March 2019, the UK is going to be under EU jurisdiction for longer than that....now if only someone had told you that was how it would be before now

But the terms that exists currently are that we are members of the EU, Single Market, Custom Union and the regulatory control and oversight that comes with it. When we leave the EU none of that will apply so it won't be possible to sign trade deals quickly on the same terms as now because the most important parts of those terms will no longer apply.
