Dont have a problem with the Burka in principle
No issues with it being worn in public
However I do believe the face should be seen when in shops petrol stations banks etc anywhere transactions are taking place |

persoanly I find it as out dated as thier religions and dont understand why they have to keep proving something.
same with the hijab fine if thats what they want to wear it's thier life I just wish they would not go banging on about it.
just like in passing a mosque all the men in dresses are wearing jeans underneath whats that all about?
either they want to wear traditional cloths or not!
But back to the hijab if you walked into a bank or shop with a full face crash helmet on you would be expected to remove it.

I struggle with this one. I'm a big believer in freedom of choice, freedom of speech, freedom of religion. Hate fascist intolerance. But then it is a symbol of oppressing females. So that's my quandary. Freedom of Choice vs Gender Equality |

The burkha is NOT required to be worn by Islam. It could be seen as a choice ( perhaps of the male choosing his "woman" must be fully covered) but banning it in a western country should not be seen as a problem.
Apart from the secrecy it gives...could be anyone under there...and in a few cases has been male terrorists. What do you think would happen if a Christian tried walking round wearing a crucifix in most Muslim countries? Want to try in Saudi? Iran? |

I have no problem with the hijab btw.....this is a head scarf and it IS traditional dress to show modesty for a woman in the presence of non family males.
The burkha is NOT traditional. It is more recent and a symbol of male oppression. |

Whenever different sexual practices come up on this forum then 20 posts on a thread will all say that same two things:
- is it consentual?
- is it hurting anyone?
Has anyone here, personally been hurt by a face veil? Not "well in theory they could..." - I mean how many of you have actually suffered because someone wore a face veil, but you wouldn't if they hadn't been wearing it? |

The burka should be banned in all civilised countries.
Iran is demanding that all female contestants in the world chess championships wear the hijab. The punishment imposed by the religious police force for failure to comply with this fascist law ranges from fines to imprisonment. There is currently a campaign by women and MEN in Iran against the hijab. |

NO!....the campaign is (by a few so far) against the burkha (full face mask aka darth Vader). The hijab is just a scarf that covers the hair and cleavage! No plans to ban it anywhere.....I remember when I was young many women here going out in scarves....some still do! |

Interesting that the post is about people being hidden and therefore potentially being not as they appear.
The first four single male posters (including the OP) have just a single verification between them (and that single verification was by cam).
I feel more inclined to take on board the opinion of those who are verifiably and clearly real - especially when the subject is ironically about other people possibly having something to hide. |

It's slippery ground when people go around trying to impose their culture on others. There are other cultures, much older than our own, that would laugh out loud if you referred to a country with a 43% divorce rate as 'civilised'. |

I just loved the arguement "we are a modern, progressive, civilised country but since they have barbaric standards abroad, our standards here should be the same as theirs".
Errr so then we wouldn't be a modern, progressive, civilised country would we! ![](/icons/s/2/eh.gif) |

I have no problem with people (note I don't say women) wearing masks (burka is a mask).
However I have serious issues when the laws of the land are not applied equally to everyone.
The simple fact of the matter is that if anyone is observed by police in a public space or in and most certainly driving a vehicle wearing a mask then they will be immediately stopped and made remove the mask identify themselves unless it is a burka.
I object to this!
In fact I object to all religious exclusions to laws and enforcement of laws! Be it the animal slaughter exclusions granted to Islam and Judaism or the right to ride on motorcycles without wearing a helmet and right to carry an offensive weapon (dagger) granted to Sheikhs. My objection is not based on prejudice against any religion, but because any exemption from any law gives those exempted a position of privilege and I object on principle to any religion being placed in that position. |

No it does not!
Islam (like many religions) requires that female followers dress modestly and cover their hair, legs and arms. It does not require them to wear masks! So when you see someone wearing a mask whether you like it or not they are proving that they are above the law by dent of religion, and therefore superior to all non believers!
And you and others who subscribe to your 'enlightened' views are reinforcing that view, and in doing so promoting more and more extreme views! After all, if they can force the majority to allow them exemption to one law why not another? In fact why not demand that their laws replace those of the country in areas where they live? After all they are in the majority? I could continue, but if you cant see the slippery slope that is giving any group exemption from laws... |

Yes! I am a great believer in the adage 'If the law does not apply equally to all it is not law, it is tyranny'.
In fact I would go further and say that those who hold 'public office' and enact or administer law should be held to higher standards than the rest of us.

No, the police are the internal arm of HM Majesties Armed Services, and are by reason of that allowed bare arms on duty. However like all members of HMAF's they should be answerable in law for all their actions, further by dint of holding public office they should be held to higher level of probity than the general publiic. |

And please tell us all how your broader definition of enlightenment is going?
Maybe explain how we are all so much safer in this more respectful world? Maybe you can explain how there is no need to worry. (After all there have been few publicised incidents of mass murderers or their enablers wearing burkas to walk through vcp's and customs-posts to avoid capture.
Also maybe you can tell all of us how well you and your fellow public office holders program of appeasement is working? Maybe give some examples of how well it has worked in the past? |

Actually they are, next time you are close to a uniformed police officer ask them if you can take a close look at their badge, you will notice like every member of HMAF's they have the Royal Crown at the top of them, because that is where they derive their power from, not a local authority or the home office. Dear god;

Do you know nothing of how your country is organized?
Constitutionally, the police and the Armed Forces are completely and utterly separate.

I'll leave you in on another (open) secret. The Police are so much part of HMAF's the first part of their training is the same as for the rest of the Armed Forces, it is called 'All Arms Foot Drill'. (In my day it lasted 3 weeks, no doubt it now lasts longer.) |

Nope sorry Attested Police Officer carry warrant cards saying the bearers have the power of arrest and search under the Police Act, but they are still subject to the same laws. Firearms officers have endorsements on their Warrant Cards allowing them to carry fire arms. You or I can carry an Asp. But we would get into trouble if we clobbered somebody with one. Even coppers can't go around belting people with them without cause. |

Sounds about right. But before you say anything about them all having different badges, just like every military formation has its own badge they all have the Royal Crown at the top of them with a cross at the very top (as has the Royal Crown) which shows where the wearer derives their power and authority.
Not seen or held a Warrant Card for some 30 odd years, but I expect it still carries the Crown. It is not there for decoration it has significance, that many do not understand the significance of the Crown on Cap Badges does not surprise me. |

Not seen or held a Warrant Card for some 30 odd years, but I expect it still carries the Crown. It is not there for decoration it has significance, that many do not understand the significance of the Crown on Cap Badges does not surprise me. "
Sorry: but the police have no power devolved from the crown, whatever their cap badges may have;
The whole legal and constitutional basis of the Army, Navy, RAF is completely different to that of the Police.
In fact the UK is one if the nations on the planet where the police forces and the military are completely and utterly separated by the law and the constitution. And where there is no national police force .
For instance, the military have no powers whatsoever in civil life, save that of a private citizen.
Police are constables; a civil appointment, not a military one. And appointed regionally, even though they cooperate at national level. |

"Lets hope most of us holding public office have a broader definition of enlightenment than you have, and have thought it through more carefully. Over and out, from the real world
And please tell us all how your broader definition of enlightenment is going?
Maybe explain how we are all so much safer in this more respectful world? Maybe you can explain how there is no need to worry. (After all there have been few publicised incidents of mass murderers or their enablers wearing burkas to walk through vcp's and customs-posts to avoid capture.
Also maybe you can tell all of us how well you and your fellow public office holders program of appeasement is working? Maybe give some examples of how well it has worked in the past?"
I think its working well and I feel very safe. But then again, I live in a multicultural city where people respect each other. No one is marginalized here |

I work in a petrol station, and as yet haven't seen any customers wearing the burka. I do ask motorcyclists who I don't know to remove their crash helmets, and would not hesitate to ask a burka wearer to show her face before I authorised her petrol pump or served her in the shop.
Safety first, and of course our ccctv cameras have to see a face to be any use if something is stolen. The worst situation would be the burka being used as a disguise for a terrorist. A petrol station is a very dangerous place, and if targeted would take out a large area outside as well as inside the perimeter. |

"Yes it should be, they should submit to western ruless, well done for france to enforce it."
Where I come from, it is illegal for men to stride around topless, they get a fine. I totally think that should be enforced here, one rule for everyone, surely? Plus, there's some nasty bodies about and I dont think I need to be subjected to them .... (I am sure you dont go out topless, Shag, at least we haven't spotted you in Penge) |

The first four single male posters (including the OP) have just a single verification between them (and that single verification was by cam).
I feel more inclined to take on board the opinion of those who are verifiably and clearly real - especially when the subject is ironically about other people possibly having something to hide. "

"Dont have a problem with the Burka in principle
No issues with it being worn in public

Totally agree ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

I think it is an afront to a modern liberated society ! "
Telling people what they can/can't wear doesn't sound like a modern liberated society to me. |

Its common amongst those of us who work all the hours under the sun and dont get outside. Easily dealt with by a vitamin d capsule though |

Its on the rise throughout the UK, not least because of children staying indoors to play ... lots of reasons |

"Is this why you object to it, for the health of the women?"
who said I objected to it? You said there was no problem with it down south, all I did was point out a problem. Be in denial about it if you like, thats fine |

It is an affront in our society to impose unnecessary conditions on other people and their preferences unless those preferences are deemed to be dangerous. So live and let live. We are happier that way. |
