Omg who'd have guessed" The main pollutant gases that we monitor for offshore from our gas turbines (industrial aircraft engines) are: 1.Oxides of nitrogen and other nitrogen compounds. 2.Sulphur dioxide and other sulphur compounds. 3.Carbon monoxide. 4.Unburned Hydrocarbons The good news is that we only run 3 engines 24/7 all year round for Power Generation and 4 engines for Gas compression. With Gas compression these are only run when plant is running and we are re-injecting or pushing into pipeline Obviously Flare emissions cause more damage due to the amount of unburned hydrocarbons, various chemicals and everything else that goes into the flare system. Ok let's start again, a pollutant is any substance or compound that inhibits and changes your living biosphere. Like I say, oxygen is pretty essential to you breathing but and it's a big but.... If I added 6% more oxygen into your house, you would pretty much instantaneously combust along with most other things in it!.... So adding oxygen is OK until you reach the point where it becomes problematic, it could then be called a pollutant.. Carbon is a pretty abundant element which your made out of and due to its nature attaches to other elements to make more "stuff" than any other element, carbon dioxide again is fine it's a requirement for life at a level... For us, humans around 250-300ppm is great things work just dapper for humans at that level, it's the level that for most of life as a human you've got used to but we've pushed that level up above 400ppm now through fossil fuel usage, that's only a tiny increase but it's big enough to give tiny differences and tiny differences in a biosphere have big impacts, like a small increase in temperature puts more water vapour in the atmosphere, that's great we all like water vapour but water vapour is a greenhouse gas that increases the temperature as well... Then there's methane that's a powerful greenhouse gas and were increasing that at large levels as well through our changes in food, and these small increases have the ability to give us the nearly 1 degree rise in temperature.... Well 1 degree doesn't seem much but then the poles are warming at ten times the rate and the north pole alarmingly so and due to the nature of how things are the north pole has millions of tonnes of frozen methane clathrates and that small increase has now started the release of those clathrates.... So you can see like a snowball it's causing big problems for a species like humans that have only ever known a very narrow band of climate..... Now let's get back to your point about c02 being a pollutant, millions of years ago during the carboniferous period it was 1200 ppm, the world was covered nothing but ferns, ivy and the oceans were like think soup from the algae.... Oh they loved that high c02 level and they loved the temperature(other life forms weren't so keen)... They loved it so much they were pretty much the main life on the planet, they soaked up all that c02(carbon) and eventually the levels dropped and they all died and trapped that carbon deep underground, where it became coal, gas and oil and it lay there for millions of years until humans found a very good use for it, however since we found a good use for it, we've been now using it for a lot of really in the main pointless stuff as well(great for capitalism, not so great for the atmosphere)... Were burning it at such levels now that we're sending the planet back to the carboniferous period(again not great for life as you know it)... If you actually take time out of your busy schedule to read the tens of thousands of scientific papers and data by the tens of thousands of experts who have spent decades researching it, you'll see they are very very clear about the problem and very very clear about the solution, you may not like the solution, like many cancer patients don't like chemotherapy.... But dems your choices. I've got no problem with people who wish to do what they wish, fly here, buy tat there, eat lots and lots of meat.... Therefore you look to the emissions you can actually cut back on....ie flying, driving, eating much less meat, using less power, better insulation in housing.... People laugh but, simple things as putting a jumper on rather than turning the heating on, walking to the local shops, cutting back on your meat intake, riding a bike to work make differences So i take it you never go abroad live in a passive house withsolar power dont have a car and you are vegan . Anyhoo no I don't fly out haven't for about 17 years, yes I drive a car although it's an old one and I make about 95% of the fuel it uses, I'm not a vegan(I love bacon) but I have cut my meat intake by about 80% and yes I have photovoltaic panels on my roof.... Will it cure the problem, no but I'm doing as much as I can....
