Andy Burnham - Manchester Mayoral Candidate

"Scouse Andy fancies his chances at being elected Mayor of Manchester.
Can't see the good folks of Manchester having much time for him even if he came bearing gifts.
Nob."
The same nob who has yet to admit the mess that he kept behind at Stafford hospital, he also only talk labour politics. And skips over the importance of being a mayor who has the best interest of the city he represents disregard less of politics |

While scores of front bench Labour MP's rebelled against Corbyn and resigned from the shadow cabinet, Andy Burnham was still there clinging to what little power he had like a limpit. I also live in Staffordshire and he is generally disliked here for what happened at Stafford hospital under his watch. Personally i can't stand the man. |

Why was the hospital his fault? |

He was Health secretary at the time the Stafford hospital scandal happened. So surely some of the responsibility must go onto his shoulders. You wouldn't think it though the way he behaved during the Stafford hospital inquiry, he was extremely unhelpful and it seemed like he really didn't want to cooperate with the inquiry. Someone else from Staffordshire already commented on this earlier in the thread before I posted, there really is no love lost for Burnham in this part of the country. |

Every politician has skeletons...Burnham had Stafford Hospital but fought for justice for the Hillsborough victims; he also said he wouldn't be part of a coup against a democratically elected leader.take it same criticism would apply to Jeremy Hunt (mispelling) for current state of NHS? Burnham is no worse than him. |

Well except in two important ways. Burnham and his team were rather good at threatening whistle blowers to shut them up and deter others and hiding the facts from public view. Like Stafford. At least Hunt has the guts to publish when things go wrong, encourage people to say what has gone wrong and try and put corrective measures in place like twinning up good and bad hospitals. |

My personal view on Burnham is that he is typical of the political operatives now seen in our politics. Straight out of college with a degree into political 'researcher' and 'advisor' roles until a safe seat locally was found and up the ladder he climbed. Never had a 'day job' so what can he bring to the working people of Manchester?
Burnham knows how to spot an opportunity to cover his arse and he knows if Corbyn stays then 2020 will be the biggest destruction of Labour in 50 years. So he shifts off to Manchester resigning as an MP so he can come back afterwards and pick over the bones. He deserves great credit for his support of the Hillsborough families but even then he was dragged kicking into that after he was jeered at an anniversary meeting.
With Sadiq Khan in London and Andy Burnham in Manchester maybe there is a second career developing for failed politicians ... |

The recent revelations and proposed cuts were not published by Hunt so don't credit him with it. All done by information requests by journalists and leaks. I accept things were hidden but don't think they aren't now...and Stafford Hospital back in news on Hunt's watch. How long has he been in charge now? |

Any failures are now in the news. Unlike in Burnham's day. That is my point. At least Hunt addresses the failures. |

That is my point. Hunt has been caught out in exactly the same way and hasn't addressed the failures...hence Stafford is back in the news failing again. Burnham deserves criticism and yes he is a chameleon; Hunt has stayed in a job he clearly has no idea how to do and his soundbite for 7 day NHS is now falling apart because it takes money he has not got to implement. |

Is a Secretary of State responsible for an individual hospital failing? No. Had he covered the failings up or misled people then yes he should go. And Health has to be the biggest poisoned chalice of any Government post....
7 day NHS? I am old enough to recall when that was standard .... I tell folks my family GP would come out to us at 11PM and people go 'Whaaat?'... |

Well if they don't there'll be a certain person on the forums bleating about it being because of Brexit. |

that's okay, if he wins, we could just follow Owen Smiths ideology and have a re-vote |

He's a decent man, Andy Burnham.
One of the few senior members in the PLP to have kept a dignified silence regarding Corbyn.
He deserves enormous credit, along with Gordon Brown, regarding justice for the Hillsborough 96.
As health minister you are more responsible for the state of the NHS as a whole than the failings of individual hospitals.
The NHS went into decline, noticeably, almost the minute the Tories got back in.
Burnham while Health minister and shadow health minister put together a decent plan for the health service as a whole.
The Tories pretend that they are putting as much if not more funding into the NHS. It is a lie. We all know (even if some of the rabid right wingers on here won't admit it) that there is more to Healthcare than accident and emergency care and even hospitals. Social services, home healthcare etc is almost as big a part of looking after the health of the vulnerable in society.
That part has been shifted onto councils and it is local government that has been shafted by the Tories with such massive cuts to their budgets.
Burnhams plan recognised this and attempts to address it.
It is the intelligent thing to do and the right thing to do, but it goes against Tory ideology.

You'd make a good spin doctor. The reason he stays silent is because he's a parasite that would serve Saddam Hussein if it meant a more senior position for himself. |

While it is also politically astute to stay quiet, perhaps, it could be that he just doesn't think the PLP are behaving correctly AND Corbyn isn't the right man for the job.
In which case he is doing the right and proper thing. Say nothing about your democratically elected leader, give him a bit more than 10 months, if you don't fully support him at least don't undermine him and get on with your job of opposing the government.
It is also the smart thing to do, especially if you really want to get this mayor nomination, but you are just assuming that it is all about greed and personal ambition for politicians rather than wanting to make a difference, but for a small number of Labour and Lib Dem MP's and an even smaller number of Tories, it is.
I don't think you have seen any of the Hillsborough documentaries, have you?
If you had you would know that at least in that instance Andy Burnham did the decent thing, unlike every politician before him. |
