Why didn't the EU elite offer Cameron a better deal?
With rising euroscepticism across the continent and an uneasy relationship with the U.K. for many years, the EU heads of state and the Brussells Eurocrats seemed happier to humiliate the British prime minister rather than offer him something he could 'sell' to the British public which may have convinced enough of us to vote remain last week.
I have not heard from anyone on the remain side of the debate suggest that the EU does not need reform, so when handed the opportunity to reach out to the electorate of its second largest economy and a net contributor to the EU budget as well as other things such as the military contribution we make etc. The EU chose instead to effectively stick two fingers up to us and say 'the EU is not for turning' no reform, just more EU whether you want it or not!
Democracy is at a premium in the EU. |

Well in the sense of the EU we wanted less not more. A less federal EU is the only solution to avoid further scepticism and exits. |

They are not EU elites, they are the elected heads of government of the other 27 member states.
They didn't humiliate Cameron or the UK, they gave him some consessions that were tough for them to give, but we gave them things too remember. NATO has an agreement with Russia not to permanently base troops in former warsaw pact countries. The quid pro quo for Poland supporting Cameron, was that Cameron had to support Poland's request for permanent basising of NATO troops in Poland.
I don't think any of the Leavers would have been happy with anything that Cameron would have come back with anyway.
To the vast majority of the EU, the 4 freedoms are key pillars, something that they truely believe in and are not willing to compromise on.
The two major freedoms to the UK are the free movement of Labour, and the free movement of Services. We care about immigrants coming here, and the City cares about selling financial services across the EU. Britain wouldn't allow another EU country to opt out of the free movement of Services, so why would they allow us to opt out of the free movement of labour? |

Because we're not the Soviet Union. We had a vote, and a result. Enjoy the ride. (I actually voted remain, but listening to the lefty whingers I'm thinking that was a cowardly thing to do). ![](/icons/s/neutral.gif) |

" They are not EU elites, they are the elected heads of government of the other 27 member states. "
Who elected the EU Commissioners and the 5 presidents who run the EU, decide policy and write all the Regulations, Laws and Directives that made up 80% of our legislation last year?
And since when was being just 1 against 27 others who can overrule you any sort of democracy? we were defeated 72 out of 72 times when we tried to have our way.
There is most certainly an elite in the EU. It is those at the top who have this single minded vision of a United States of Europe. They already created 5 Presidents, a flag, an anthem, a currency and police force and are now creating an Army. How many more hints do people need? The message is totally clear. We either fell in behind this political project to create a Superstate or we were not welcome.
You need to understand that when the UK spoke of and demanded 'reform' we meant less bureaucracy and laws and migration. To the EU 'reform' means MORE integration and loss of sovereignty in the great cause of 'Union'. We simply became totally incompatible with the political project that was foisted on us 20 years ago, without our approval, and has grown bit by bit, again without our approval, ever since. |

The British government has voted against EU laws 2% of the time since 1999
Official EU voting records* show that the British government has voted ‘No’ to laws passed at EU level on 56 occasions, abstained 70 times, and voted ‘Yes’ 2,466 times since 1999, according to UK in a Changing Europe Fellows Sara Hagemann and Simon Hix.
In other words, UK ministers were on the “winning side” 95% of the time, abstained 3% of the time, and were on the losing side 2%.
a truer picture of our time in the EU |

"Why didn't the EU elite offer Cameron a better deal?"
Whilst I think many of them have been arrogant since the vote, I'm not sure what else you wanted them to give before the vote?
Freedom of movement is a cornerstone of the EU, there's no way it could be optional whilst you are a member. |

"we got"

"we got to keep the pound"
.
"we got"
We got to stay out Schengen!!!!
.
sounds like Britain is looked upon as school children being told they can get this but cant have that
That is where the EU goes drastically wrong, trying to dictate, especially when trying to dictate to the people of Britain, and in turn their precious EU will fall.
.
Fall much harder and faster than expected. |

" when you're a small country with only 60 plus million people you will get dictated to regardless of the size of your ego out side the eu do you think Britain can dictate to USA China or India ? You need to wake up and look at facts and figures yes we are the 5things largest economy but in real terms some states in America have bigger economies than the uk |

Yup, the 2 largest economies in the world are bigger than the bottom 176 combined. There are about 15 economies of any significance at all. 5th would only be impressive if it was a normal distribution, it isn't, and GDP per head we are about 18th |

If the UK is so bad, why is it you chose to live here?
Is our military also as shit as everything else you all condemn Britain for?
Serious folks, if that's the way you all think, why not move out |

if you are saying that you can also consider the EU 30 years ago and what it is today (exactly why the huge Majority of Britain chose to leave)
and of course there are our nuclear arms including trident
Why is it you dislike Britain so much that you have bailed out? |

Saw radical changing attitudes during the thatcher era .never liked living in the UK then either |

Found the same in Lanzarotte where I stayed for a year teaching surf, locals were very abusive to anyone moving in on their surf locations even though tourism is how they survive.
A year was enough as Island fever is a nightmare on such a small island. |

Saw radical changing attitudes during the thatcher era .never liked living in the UK then either
and I've lived in Spain and seen just the same if not worse from the Spanish towards immigrants
Found the same in Lanzarotte where I stayed for a year teaching surf, locals were very abusive to anyone moving in on their surf locations even though tourism is how they survive.
A year was enough as Island fever is a nightmare on such a small island.
Dont find that here on Fuerteventura..yet and dont live anywhere near the expats .love small island living .
won't they have you?
That would have been counter productive wouldn't it to leave a country full of Brits only to move to an area full of Brits ..some of whom told me we don't want immigrants in the UK when pointed out they were the immigrants over here to be told no dear I'm an expat .. Its different
well in that case shouldn't you have been supporting Brexit in the hope that it would deter more Brits from living there?
After all, according to the scaremongers that is going to be soooo difficult now
Think the lower pound will do that for me .."
so you are a Brexit supporter then |

So the UK armed forces bigger or considerably smaller than 30 years ago ?,,number of navel ships more or far less ..
if you are saying that you can also consider the EU 30 years ago and what it is today (exactly why the huge Majority of Britain chose to leave)
and of course there are our nuclear arms including trident

Many people on the remain side have said throughout the run up to the vote that the EU is in need of major reform, saying that hasn't happened seems to be a part of the post vote distortion and an emerging narrative which seeks to cloud the reality..
It's done and it's legitimate to look at how the campaign was spun from both sides and the valid concerns post vote from not just the remain side..
The narrative is being prepared that any downturn is solely down to some with concerns being labelled as negative whingers and nothing to do with the actual reality which we don't know yet.. |

" They are not EU elites, they are the elected heads of government of the other 27 member states.
We simply became totally incompatible with the political project that was foisted on us 20 years ago, without our approval, and has grown bit by bit, again without our approval, ever since."
And that is why I voted out, the future was set out for us and I didnt like what I saw,in someways I hope the EU doesnt collapse so those here that are so unhappy will see what our destiny would have been had we stayed and to those who say we had a veto at some point it would have been a choice of all in or get out |
