Why is being woke so bad?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Depends on your idea of "woke" really.
Acknowledging and discussing the issues around discrimination and prejudice against gender, race, religion, disabilities and everything else. No, not bad at all.
Hypocritical people using it as an excuse to play victim when they are a bit of a prat, and attack other groups, yes. Those are the "woke" people that I tend to avoid, or call out. |

The difference in language you used between the two paragraphs highlights the issue though, right? Unfortunately, those against certain "woke" ideas use loaded language as a way to cause division rather than actually having a calm and reasonable discussion which is why emotions trump any sort of rationality when talking about the subject. |

"I suspect that most people who claim to be anti-woke don't actually know what woke means, or perhaps more likely have decided it means whatever they want it to mean. "
I often see right wing folks talking about the ‘woke agenda’, I’m just wondering what it is and why it’s bad |

You can't have a calm and reasonable discussion with them though. I've been part of or seen debates devolve into personal attacks from the side trying to be the social justice advocates the moment they realise they can't convince you their side is right. It usually only takes a couple exchanges before they resort to ad hominem. You could also advocate for social justice but if your view points differ to theirs or you try to call them out on any misguided perceptions or unproductive behaviour, they will consider you to be an enemy too. |

I think you're talking if the small minority who do that, similar to how a small minority think they should be allowed to say and do what they want without being called out on it. In reality, real people fall somewhere in the middle. |

I agree that defining Woke, is a huge problem. The original meaning has started to change to be used as derogatory term.
Now for my thoughts...
I'm open to treating everyone with equity.
I will also try my utmost to respect others beliefs.
I have experienced that if I hold a right wing point of view, let's use gender identity as an example. I have been told I'm wrong and that I need to change.
I then question who has priority in the "my opinion is correct"game?
I'll never say someone's opinion is wrong, I might disagree, but they are entitled to form their own thoughts.
However, when facts and science are disregarded then I will say that someone is wrong as and try and offer the facts.
So I'm short I dislike that the conversations are so emotive around being woke. If we're all expected to conform and accept the woke ideology then why can't they accept others might wish to disagree with them without being ridiculed? |

One thing I noticed during the online anger towards what happened to George Floyd was how many insincere people were joining in. Literally the BLM logos and profile pictures lasted for a few months and then so many went back to pretending like nothing happened. And they've not mentioned it since. It came across as insincere. |

There is a saying that principles aren’t principles until they cost you something. And this is the problem with woke. Too much trying on beliefs and ideas like clothes, to be discarded when they become inconvenient or expensive.

I don’t think being woke is bad I think extreme left and right is bad ideally we should all be able to live our lives exactly how we want to live it without being told from others that we should change. But also we need to accept that not everyone will agree to everything we do so if agree to disagree was more common then we’d probably all get along a lot better (mr) |

Yeah but the thread is about 'woke'
and wanting equality of opportunity isn't exclusively a woke ideology as much as they want to claim it is. 🥪
It kind of is when the opposite side of the spectrum is against the idea of certain people having the opportunities to be successful and chalk it down to it being a "participation trophy".
Would that opposite side be the side thats had two female prime ministers and a Hindu prime minister? 🥪
Three females, one Hindu, one Jewish...

Just because those are examples in the last 50 years, doesn't mean it includes every day life of people in certain other careers. They still exist regardless of who's in the top brass. |

Seems that those on the right get upset about the woke agenda or the woke mind virus and just basically should be admitting that what was considered " Acceptable" decades ago isn't nowadays as hopefully we've all grown up and realised that some of what we all laughed at or said was "Offensive" ? but got a tad silly now as in the so called woke students backing the likes of hamas ?? etc etc etc ..x |

I remember seeing young obviously left wing people supporting Hamas during the major protests last year. Now criticise Israel all you like and support Palestinian civilians. But supporting Hamas of all groups? The same organisation that believes in stories of Jews wanting to take over the world. And wishes for the annihilation of Jews worldwide. Yeah no that is absolutely sickening. |

Do people really need to have "woke" defined when it is such a commonly used word in all parts of life, or is that the way to try and discredit the word by arguing semantics once a definition is provided? |

"Is it not majorly ‘woke’ people who get offended on behalf of others?
Who argue about things the majority of others would let slip?
Who take criticism and imply you’re being degrading when it’s evident no intent was met?
I think you're talking if the small minority who do that, similar to how a small minority think they should be allowed to say and do what they want without being called out on it. In reality, real people fall somewhere in the middle.
Sorry but I will continue to call out anyone who uses this rationale as an excuse to bully anyone.
Do you think that calling a woman that has transitioned ‘a man in a dress’ is bullying someone? That gay characters on TV is ‘shoving it down our throats’ or that gay sex between men is ‘disgusting and abhorrent’ is bullying?
These are common and current attitudes that people on this thread and others have used"
Obviously, yes that would be bullying. And I've never said those things in my life before anyone tars me with that brush. |

" Woke now covers so many areas and you are right, people like to be obtuse and ask you for a definition when it's obvious you are using a definition that's used widely. They do this to grandiose themselves as somehow being a superior authority on all things woke or just to try and rip someone's argument apart. It's pathetic really, especially when this tactic is used by someone claiming to support woke ideals because I believe most people view being woke as just being nice and considerate to others, something people who use this linguistic device of definition definitely aren't.

My biggest issue with "woke" people is that they want to encourage freedoms and critical thinking, unfortunately it needs to align with their beliefs. It's all a bunch of bullshit and the worst ends of the spectrum are the ones controlling the narrative and causing friction.
You don't have to be right wing just because you believe in two genders. |

People can be as woke as they want,I think what winds people up is when you don't care about what they find important they automatically think that you are against them so in there eyes your the enemy, belive in what you want just realise there are other people who don't hold the same views or in my case don't really give a fuck about things that don't affect me,as long as friends and family are fine I really don't care about people I don't know |

"Right wing folks and believers, please explain "
So, I see you are keen just for an answer to your original post. Hope this is an answer.
I'm short, yes woke ideology has become bad. The sentiment of the majority of woke individuals I'm sure is good.
The 'bad' stems from the shift in the use of the term woke from it's original definition/sentiment.
The term has been "weaponised" & now creates divisions. creating barriers to open discussion, as people automatically assume woke means one thing and it might mean another depending on your belief.
It's lost its footing. In the same way over the years Christianity has lost its footing because of all the bad people in it. Woke has
moved from a positive agenda. I honestly believe that it is now seen as bad because the minority of the "woke"agenda pushed and pushed and eventually the centre opposition (you called them the right) pushed back because their own beliefs are now being challenged and demonised in the same way that many minorities were harassed or persecuted for. Hope that makes sense. X |

I don’t identify as right wing or left wing. I don’t like the zealots on either side: the hang ‘em and flog brigade and the everyone is a victim brigade are as bad as each other.
The world is nuanced and the thing I don’t like about how “woke” (whatever that now means) has played out is the zealotry nature of it. This binary view of the world - you are either with us or against us - is just wrong. Life is lived in the mucky grey world of compromise and that doesn’t sit well with the purist view that is often espoused. |

In the performative age of the Internet and Social Media, what people say they believe has never had less value and what they actually do has never been more important.
Wokeness at heart is a performative movement, not a political one. It is about saying you are 'woke' as opposed to being asleep like the others, like those deplorables as they were once described. In its founding vocabulary the woke are elevated above the rest in their awareness and morality. That clearly has great appeal to the ego and vanity.
But what have the woke actually achieved politically ? In the US where wokeness arose Donald Trump has been elected twice, in no small part due to the atmosphere of division and tribalism enhanced by woke's embrace of identity politics in every aspect of life.
In Europe almost every country has moved to the right in the last ten years, some to the far right.
That is woke's real legacy, and only when the political left again adopts policies that are both pragmatic and popular (as it has done in Denmark for example) will it return to power and the worst forces of intolerance recede.
So essentially, thanks for nothing, woke !

"Depends on your idea of "woke" really.
If we're all expected to conform and accept the woke ideology then why can't they accept others might wish to disagree with them without being ridiculed?"

Well done. That's made me laugh this morning. Xxx |

Is it now woke to declare a gender and preferred pronouns to a city? For example, if someone lives in Manchester (he/him), is that not assuming the gender of said city? |

I'd be grateful if you would tell us all how you can discern someone's politics just by looking at them.
Why were these young people that you saw, "obviously left wing," please? |

Scottish?
Yeah I’m Scottish and HATE victim mentality 😅
Maybe the Scots shouldn’t have hating the English as their national identity then? 😇😈
I guess it’s less about being a victim. And more because the English are cunts xx

"I don't even know what "woke" means. It's not even in my vocabulary because I don't how to use it. I accept the blissful state of my ignorance." Google it and get more confused...the OP supposes that only 'right wing' can offer a view on this, which seems like a strange startpoint for a debate to remain healthy. There have been plenty of cases of so called Left Wing hitting out at far left (what is that nearly far right ?
An emerging and educating post though, so thanks to the OP...and there are some many ironies...an English hating Scot lives in Manchester a City that only remained English because Scottish troops wanted their pay, didn't get paid went home instead..
WOKE seems to have become mainstream easy starter to ignite anger rather to to just highlight injustices as it it started out....I have mates who are all over the political spectrum so I am happy just sitting listening to both sides of any argument then reflecting upon what is the strongest argument or more correctly what the weaknesses are in both arguments |

There are thousands of people all over the world, whom are just waiting for an excuse to be offended. That is the end of their waiting, as they play the eternal victim card.
They have this massive self important attitude going on. This in mind, I believe the best thing to do is to ignore them. Just don’t respond, I for one have no interest in them.
Moving on… |
