"9-11 years is the average reading age of the UK adult population, with adults age 55-65 having the lowest average literacy. Recent events suggest we should invest in improving the reading comprehension of adults across the UK, because it would seem that even our MPs lack basic reading skills. For example, the Government webpage for PIP states: "What PIP is for: Personal Independence Payment (PIP) can help with extra living costs if you have both: a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around because of your condition You can get PIP even if you’re working, have savings or are getting most other benefits." Yet, MPs are talking about "getting back to work" and claiming PIP as being completely intertwined. Perhaps remedial reading classes could be provided in the Palace of Westminster during the (taxpayer funded) mealbreaks and on internet fora, such as this one, by suitably qualified teachers? Maybe some disabled people could be repurposed from their usual habits of blocking the pavements outside Wetherspoons with their mobility scooters, watching daytime telly with a few Special Brews in-hand or before they spark up their 80th cig of the day, all whilst scrolling mindlessly on their top of the range smartphone? Or whatever else the disabled waste their days doing? ![]() Perhaps cos they scan read? That's my excuse ![]()
" Perhaps cos they scan read? That's my excuse ![]() I'm sorry, but we cannot accept that answer. Children in Yr 3 of primary school are taught how to scan read to extract key information and must pass a comprehension exam using this skill! These are children aged 7-8 years old. Sorry, but we don't make the rules ![]() ![]() ![]()
