I’m sure Trump spends most of his days fretting about what’s going on in Germany.

Merz is saying it as it is, the reliance on the US is too much and Germany along with the rest of Europe need to stop ignoring problems and do something about them.

It will be interesting to see how the EU will react because right now I think the trade bloc that is masquerading as a governing body isn’t equipped to handle geopolitical realities.

I have no idea how it will unfold, a more powerful EU, but that would alienate non EU countries and the EU lacks the strategic cohesion to act decisively.. Or a European defence alliance outside of NATO, but that could create issues with any European country that believes NATO is the only answer.

"Has he already put himself on Trump's shit-list?"

Merz has just earned himself a place on Trump's Christmas card list.

Trump is trying to get Europe to take on more of the burden of the defence of Ukraine, so that the US can save some money. With Merz saying that we need to forget the US and set up an EU army pronto, he's doing exactly what Trump wants.

I'd be shocked if he could point to Germany on a map

I think he is indicating a European defence capability, not EU defence capability.

Either way, it's less American dollars getting paid out, so Trump will be happy.

Of course, but it isn't about Trump it is about a unified Europe.

No-one forced the USA to be Europe's protector. In many ways it was the USA's free choice backed up by treaties and agreements signed by them.

Needless to say, when the USA chooses a President that has a history of non payment of bills and reneging on contracts he saw an opportunity to lose a responsibility and cut Taxes for the rich.

Merz, Macron and even Starmer are correct to increase Europe's defence capabilities. The USA under Trump is no longer an ally and, at a distance, should be viewed as potentially hostile.

The US should be viewed as potentially hostile?

Can you explain the logic behind that statement for me?
