Hundreds of thousands of US federal workers have been given little more than 48 hours to explain what they accomplished over the past week, sparking confusion across key agencies as the tech billionaire Elon Musk expands his crusade to slash the size of government.

Musk, who serves as President Donald Trump’s cost-cutting chief, telegraphed the extraordinary request on his social media network on Saturday.

“Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,” Musk posted on X, which he owns. “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

instruction: “Please reply to this email with approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week and cc your manager.”

The deadline to reply listed as Monday at 11:59pm.

Sounds sensible.

I’m sure US government employees are all as busy as their UK counterparts and won’t have any difficulty responding.

It seems a crude way to obtain a hit list.

There is no mention of not replying will be seen as resignation in the actual email sent, that’s Musk massaging his own ego on X.

If it were me, I would respond with the following:

1. I met or exceeded my agreed targets on Monday.

2. I met or exceeded my agreed targets on Tuesday.

3. I met or exceeded my agreed targets on Wednesday.

4. I met or exceeded my agreed targets on Thursday.

5. I met or exceeded my agreed targets on Friday.

In addition, I had to respond to garbage requests from managers.

Technically no… but as with things about this authoritarian administration can push things and see what decisions they get when it invariably goes to SCOTUS

First of all they are going to have to decide once and for all whether if Elon as actually a government employee… because there are so many conflicts of interests lines they are skirting

I’m guessing the unions will go to a federal judge tomorrow who will put an injunction on them progressing over procedures and processes and legality

It’s so legally vague that the new head of the FBI and people at DHS have told their staff to ignore it!

👍 Also add that due to management demands I had to work at home remotely over the weekend 😉

The thing about the concentration on musk is that it almost gives trump an excuse of plausible deniability…. If it gets really bad he will just point the finger and say “wasn’t me”

He just found someone else to play bad cop… and the moment musk crosses the line.. he overrules him and becomes good cop

He did a similar thing with Twitter employees. One in Ireland didn't bother replying, and was fired. He promptly sued for wrongful dismissal and won, as Ireland has much better employment laws than the US.

“Some” workers….. the heads at the FBI and the DHS have sent emails to their staff to ignore the emails

Also unions are telling people not to reply…

We will see if people do respond and what happens… until Elon “status” is clarified a lawsuit , they are basically in rush everything mode

DOGE as an official government department doesn’t exist as only congress can create or dissolve departments, they have basically taken over the dept of digital services… and if Elon is head, he should have a confirmation hearing

I understood Musk was an advisor for 2 reasons, he might not clear security for the actual role of "head" and he would need to step away from his businesses through conflict of interest.

I actually don't know but there is an assumption he is head of which is driven by media reporting such as "Musk's DOGE" etc, his own self publicity efforts or if he really is head of.

Like you say it needs clarification and if he really is only an advisor, the media and Musk need to tone down the narrative.

Just an update in the weird and wonderful world of this email

So here is the TLDR Version.. or your brain will fry…

On Friday Musk sends out threatening email about job dismissal telling people it must replied to by Monday 5pm local time

Over the weekend various heads of various departments, including DoJ, DHS, FBI, DoD and State all tell their employees not reply to the email

Unions advise their members not to respond

On Monday night musk sends 2nd threatening email .. telling people they must answer the email by Tuesday night or they will be fired

Trump calls people who didn’t answer email “semi-fired”

OPM who the email is supposed to go to say any replies are optional….

Meanwhile, legally in court yesterday DoJ could not tell a federal judge who ran DOGE, in the white house press briefing today the press secretary say she knows who runs doge but would not disclose publicly,

And following up a court today blocked Doge and the White House from freezing federal funds and grants to programs where congress has already approved funding… in a move that the judge said she was blocking upon further review because what they are doing is highly likely illegal”

In a press conference last week, Trump said " I made Elon head of DOGE". Saw it on YouTube, but this comment doesn't seem to have been given the spotlight you think it would. Not seen it played or mentioned anywhere else.

I guess Musk is about to learn the hard way that running a federally controlled department isn’t the same as running his own businesses

I have seen all manner of stories about Musk and DOGE, and I'm stll no clearer in his position.

I think the Whitehouse are struggling to manage this and it will be Musk's downfall.

Also, Tesla are being challenged globally by China, and the noise he is creating is only being supported by the confusion that surrounds him, time is not going to be his friend is what I think.

Problem is that if Elon was “head of doge” he would need to go through a public senate confirmation hearing and a vote

Not to even mention the huge amount of “conflicts of interest” (for example starlink got awarded a 2bn contract to upgrade the FAA air traffic control systems …. Only issue is that Verizon already has the contract to do that! And musk has been criticising them saying they were not the right people to handle that contract)

Making it up as they go along…

So anyway they are saying he is a special advisor to the president

Anyway, the White House have finally given the name of the career civil servant they say is running doge, only issue now is that she is actually based in Nashville, rather than Washington… and more interestingly… been on holiday in Mexico for the last 10 days!!

So some cunning press person has found her in Mexico, and she was surprised she had been named as the administrator.. news to her!

Now I bet the house democrats try to bring her in for a public hearing to try to get an explanation on how doge actually works (republicans will fight this as they know it would be a horrible look)

In my deep south accent.

Well I had a cup of coffee bought and some gas for the car with US Dollars.

Looked at my Inbox wasted a couple of minutes being distracted by reading an e-mail about what I did at work.

Answered some important emails pertaining to business bosses not doing any work.

Checked the figures for the months spread sheet. Interfaced with the legal department about aforementioned e-mail.

Went to a meeting about work efficiency.

Then spent some US dollars on lunch.

Then got on with the spreadsheet.

Wtf did you think I was doing Musky.

He's a twat n half.

Before he criticises peoples work he should do the job himself first, the over privileged prick.

The sooner he pisses off to Mars the better.

I had a meeting with my manager yesterday and he asked what I am working on. I had no problems telling him. It wasn’t too difficult. It never is, given that I am so busy. Maybe if I had nothing to do I would be more nervous about it.

I should start a thread about what a disgraceful overreach and insult to my dignity it is my employer enquiring about how I am spending its money.

Public sector productivity in the UK down what 6-7% since 2020? Maybe a few more UK public sector managers should be enquiring as to what their staff are doing.

Any insider trading?

Full investigation into his whole organisation's.

Maybe someone can start a crowd fund to send Elon to Mars. Am sure it would be popular.
