Right wing left wing ? What’s it all about
Jump to: Newest in thread
Is it just me or does everyone seem to have an agenda nowadays? Had a guy message me and told me he was a left wing lawyer ( so what ? ) when i turned him down he asked me if it was because I'm far right . I’m neither right or left why do people feel all of a sudden you have to be one or the other ? |

"I think this has always been the case
It all seems over emphasised now though everyone calling each other right or left couple of years ago it was a term that was very seldom used "
Think you're right OP. But not right wing ! |

It’s pretty bonkers how divisive things have become for some, isn’t it? Just remember, your perspective is valuable, and it’s perfectly okay to stand in the middle. Keep being your authentic self! |

I agree with you, I think it is because there really isn't any centre ground any more. We have a socialist government and America and Right wing government.
I think people are just fed up with politics and politicians as a whole.
I think it is interesting that he describes himself as a left wing lawyer. Why not just a lawyer? |

I totally agree. If your opinion doesn't match others some people just hate you. It is ok to have an opinion and respect other opinions too! |

"I would have deleted it without giving a response.
It's like asking people who they voted for at the polling station... it's just rude."
Hahaha quite right too. You would never introduce yourself as a right wing lawyer would you? It is the lefties that tend to pinch their agenda more, I think the centrists and centre rights are just waking up to them 🤷♂️ |

In America they make how they vote their identity. It’s so weird.
So they’re in this perpetual cycle of being divided & thinking half the country is “evil” & “wrong”. It’s so stupid & juvenile.
They treat politics the same way we do football teams.
Hopefully we don’t follow suit. |

Good comparison. I've known people for years with no idea of their politics or how they vote and wouldn't dream of asking them. I do think people's politics have now become part of their identity and they want to parade that, especially to mark themselves out as the 'good' people, although they are often not at all good or nice. |

Probably because he's a shit lawyer, and the only way he gets work now is by exploiting peoples political beliefs. |

Why even tell me he’s a lawyer? I don’t care what people do for a living having a good job doesn’t make you a good guy |

Labels have become pretty meaningless.
Most things have a lot more grey and nuance to them than the labels allow.
North Korea is officially the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”. And of course it is none of those things. |

This is just a variant on the spurned single man syndrome, endemic in the forum, with the political twist, that he'd thought he'd innoculated his message with.
The politics don't matter - look beyond it. Aggrieved single man issues |

Just like reform UK Ltd. Naming a political party with supposidly conservative core values, after a word that is typically and historically synonymous with left wing/progressive politics |

The rise in social media tracks almost exactly with the rise in tribalism and the lack of ability to see / accept other people having their own opinions. It’s allowed those in society with a normally small voice to find others at the extremes with them and appear to have a louder voice. The art of discussion has been lost to the playground tactics of shouting and name calling. |

Or condemning them for how they voted.
I'm not ashamed, and won't be made to feel ashamed to have voted Labour, and also to have been a Bexiteer. |

I see this on the forum though. I find it maddening to be labelled left or right when i don't think of certain issues being that way. Don't get me wrong I understand politics infiltrates every aspect of our lives, but I don't I have to be a leftie in every single aspect (just because I align that way politically). |

Alot of polarisation today, but there are still middle of the road types.
Post war Britain seems to have ping ponged constantly, and agendas have been rife.
You wanna be in my gang syndrome too.
Always been independent and will never change. |

Kilkenny, but Dublin is more fun |
Oftentimes I do wonder if the increasing divisiveness of our politics is somewhat urged along to keep the populace distracted and divided squabbling amongst themselves over relatively little things so the system underneath (dominance of major multinational companies in global society able to easily outcompete small competitors and a financial system that benefits the ultra wealthy already most of all for examples) remains safe from scrutiny.
That said, could easily be also related to our tribalistic species that adapted for a much much smaller and simpler world than it is now going a tad crazy with how big things got so quickly being too vulnerable to groupthink and needing to belong to one group or another. |

We've been kicking the shit out of Nazis since at least Cable Street in 1936, and social media wasn't invented then.

There's been lots of work on tools like the political compass to map where people are politically, and which are more complicated than where they would have sat in the French revolutionary assembly in the eighteenth century (which is where e left and right wing comes from). My view is that we're probably more in need of a multi dimensional tool than the two dimensions of the political compass, but mapping tools can be useful, especially when they're used to challenge people on the dissonance between where they think they are, and where they actually are. |
