No doubt your average Trump supporter will say she's bent the knee; but has she?

All she had to do to maintain her country's trade surplus with the USA - and buy herself a month's planning time - was to agree to move 10,000 troops to the USA/Mexico border.

I think she's been underestimated.

Terra Firma

If she stands by her promise to send troop to the border with the aim to stem the flow of drugs and Trump disrupts the gun running into Mexico, this would be a monumental step in the right direction.

It is in't one versus the other it is negotiation and working together, that is what we expect our leaders to do to drive positive change.

Same as Colombia? LOL Not even close. They weren't in a position to threaten retaliation.

Trudeau has just negotiated a deal not that much different from the Mexico one. More efficient border control.

Considering how little Mexico and Canada are having to do, it's pretty obvious that someone sat Donnie down and explained the realities of the economics to him - and what it would do to his supporters' jobs and bills.

And that he would be unable to avoid the blame for the pain he was preparing them for - but would not be suffering with them.

Anyway, we'll see if it lasts the month.

But that’s not correct. This is exactly the deal that Biden negotiated in 2021 unless this an another 10,000 soldiers on top of the 10,000 that Biden negotiated?

Trump has been spooked by the markets because he thought he had invented the wheel whereas he was just late to the party. Now he has to try to calm the markets, ease inflation whilst simultaneously reassuring his base whilst swallowing a somewhat inconvenient truth that that his actions were beyond dumb.

As I said on another thread, the markets will dictate Trump’s actions howsoever he tries to spin things.

What did he want that he has now got?

Canada 51st state? No.

Trade deficits (Mexico and Canada) equalised? No

He has simply realised that his great (but very dumb idea) about tariffs is not going to be supported by the financial markets and so he has to spin a win any way he could.

Watch tariffs now disappear from the Trump vocabulary.

Tariffic. I agree with him in principle but the hard truth is he's got to give so as to take, when your country is at the top of the tree it has to give way to the little sprouts popping up, or they die and the tree dies.

He's on a reparation quest, hopefully it doesn't fuck everyone up in the process.

I do believe a strong America a strong world economicly only time will tell.

"He threatened tariffs and got what he wanted"

LOL Oh, to live in a world so simple. He got nothing he hadn't already been offered. The USA is still in trade deficit with Canada and Mexico - and he hasn't lifted the threat, he's postponed it.

That gives Canada and Mexico time to prepare for when he does; if he's stupid enough to.

Maybe he'll use the time to prepare for the sanctions his voters will suffer, in the unlikely event he cares.

In any case, the damage with Canadians has very clearly been done. They're unlikely to forgive it during the next four years.
