Did you hear canadas reply to trump? Trudeus reply came with just hours after trump ordered 25% tariffs on candadian and mexican imports and 10% on goods from china,
Trudeau also announced that they will have its own 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. imports, the tariffs will roll out in two phases starting feb 4 on $30 bil. targeting american products such as alcohol, produce, household goods and industrial materials, the same day the american tariffs are set to begin.
What is your view about it of why trump is doing it, are you like me and wondering why he is doing and what he is trying to achieve with it?
The way I see, there will be nothing positive being achieved with this, only causing more tension, do you also think there is a chance there will be a trade war further down the line too? |

Trump's strength is his unpredictability and bullying. Foreign leaders are wary of him, and prone to giving-in too easily. But right now, he pretty much has the world aligned against him, and that might by a threat too far. The problem I think is that the MAGA brigade consider it a 'right' that the US holds sway over the rest of the world. But the world order is changing, China is resurgent, EU well organised, BRICS catching up. The US will have to learn to share the Earth's spoils. |

He hasn’t read his history books and he thinks that “owning” foreign leaders will outweigh the harm that his trade wars will cause.
The markets need stability and security and my guess is that it will be the markets that eventually put an end to all this nonsense.
I think we may have to go through a few months of dick waving and ego posturing by the orange man to satisfy his adoring hordes, but ultimately this will all have to come to an end at the behest of the financial markets. |

Indeed. Canada. Think about that. It is, despite the "special relationship", the USA's most significant ally.
A leading western democracy, NATO and G7 member. And Trump views it as an economic enemy. Why? Is there any evidence that the US economy is weak, or under attack?
What will the UK goverment's response to all this pointless economic vandalism be? Stand against it, with our other allies, or meekly submit to Trump's demands?
Only kidding. We know it's the latter; as Farage and Badenoch would be only too happy to do, were they in power. |

I thought the response was pretty good from Canada. In particular the growing movement in Canada to now encourage people not to but American goods and some places refusing to sell American goods. If that gets momentum it could have a greater and longer term effect than the tariffs |

Trudeau has just negotiated a deal not that much different from the Mexico one. More efficient border control.
Considering how little Mexico and Canada are having to do, it's pretty obvious that someone sat Donnie down and explained the realities of the economics to him - and what it would do to his supporters' jobs and bills.
And that he would be unable to avoid the blame for the pain he was preparing them for - but would not be suffering with them.
Anyway, we'll see if it lasts the month. |

Trump got the Canada situation badly wrong and blinked!
The fact he got basically everyone on both sides of Canadian politics to band together… saw what was going to be tariffed, and then also saw the pictures of American products taken off the shelves spooked especially red state politicians
And to basically keep on saying he wants Canada to be the 51st state isn’t helpful
All Canada basically did was to call cartels terrorist organisations, and to create a fentanyl czar (only 0.5% of the drug comes into the us via the northern border) in fact more fentanyl comes into the us from America citizens bringing it in driving over the border
Trump tried to bully Trudeau because he thought he was in a really weak position and lost… the only saving grace for Trump is that Trudeau is only Canadian prime minister for another 3 ish weeks! … if the liberals choose mark carney as their new leader, good luck on trump bullying him!! |

Cars ain’t happening… basically the unwritten rule is we tax their cars, they tax our trucks!
Besides.. on the larger cars you have size weight and emissions standards |

UK finds itself in a unique position of being all kinds to all countries, especially when it comes to Canada, America,Gchina and a big hunk of Europe.
The key player seems to be Starmer.
Will he fuck things up or become the hero of the century?
I think more likely the former.
Prepare for disaster. |

This is an environmental move. If less goods are moving round the world by planes trains and automobiles it has to benifit the environment. If the UK did not in port as much out of seasion veg it would be a good thing. |

I need to make an apology… I got the amount of fentanyl coming across the border from Canada to the USA wrong…
I said it was 0.5% of all fentanyl seizures came across the US Canada border…. It was actually 0.2 % of all fentanyl seized
43 lbs to be precise….. a suitcase worth ish?? |

The UK hasn't been self-reliant in food production for about 200x years; UK government policy historically has been to have cheap food. An impact of restrictions on imports/exports is less choice & more costs for the customer, which isn't great for anyone. |

Indeed. And the damage with Canadians has already been done. Tariffs or not, they're no longer in a mood to buy American. |

Trudeau has agreed to:
1.3b border plan
US-Canada joint strike force (wonder who will run that)
200m for intel
10k personnel for border security
All this just to delay tariffs for 30 days. Looks to me like Trump just fed him his own arse.
With around 77% of all their exports going into the US I think Canada need Trump more than he needs them |

It would be great if the 1.3bn border plan and the 10k personnel for border security were not already announced in mid December
There is very little illegal immigration activity across the northern border, so the strike force is show….
So all he got was 200 m for extra intelligence
Trump blinked!!! I know it’s hard to admit
Why do you think he has suddenly been playing up the “short term pain “ statements |

It’s hard to admit when a political figure disliked by the left, democratically voted in with a huge mandate, actually does what he said he was going to do. I guess the liberals really don’t like the idea of another term with no wars🤷♂️ Bring back Biden, I say |

He was returned with a majority of ~1.5% of the popular vote (49.8% vs. 48.3%); hardly a huge mandate.
Plus he said he would make life cheaper for Americans; you don't reduce costs by imposing tariffs/taxes on products |

TDS level 6 I think, even down to the -1.5%
Trump won 312 electoral votes to Harris's 226 and as you quite rightly pointed out picked up the popular vote.
A conclusive and clear win in anyones eyes |

"But he hasn’t imposed them has he? He’s discussed the possibility and reaped the benefit "
See Fabio's reply above; Canada & Mexico are announcing stuff they have already implemented in December.
Also; due to Trump's announcements, China has imposed tariffs on US imports (China buys a load of US soya, agricultural equipment, for example) too & investigations into US companies operating there.
His announcements caused uncertainty, mistrust of American; same with his Greenland comments.
Personally, I think it's a cover for what Musk is doing re US funding of different agencies. |

Yeah, he won the election clear cut. So you are correct, so he has a mandate...
Personally, IMO, Americans are welcome to Trump...it's just that the rest of us have to deal with him too!
I don't think he will improve their lives & won't make The West any better...jury is still out for me if he does something for Ukraine, Taiwan, Palestine.
I also believe Trumpism will be a force in global politics for a lot longer than Trump will be around! |

Trump will reshape global geopolitics. He will make missteps, but he will also achieve successes. The challenge is recognising which is which, without being blinded by Trumpism. |

Is that the amount seized? But what about the stuff that gets across undetected and hits the streets? It's a huge border across a wilderness and extremely difficult to Police. Maybe tons of the stuff is getting across from Canada? |

Lot of money to be made in volatile markets, even falling ones. Especially if you know when and what will be announced. |

So according to some posts here the concessions announced by Mexico and Canada had already been announced and planned last year. I have only seen that here and the BBC have not highlighted this as far as I know. If that really is the case then it does not say much for Americans level of intelligence to be fobbed of with things that are already in place. I wonder what things the EU is already implementing that they can con these daft Americans with to avoid possible tariffs |

Thanks for the link. As it was just over a month ago and trump was already speaking of introducing tariffs due to the problems on the boarder, was these in response to his threatened tariffs or were they always going to do it? It does seem that if they were always going to do it and nothing to do with threatened tariffs then the Americans are pretty daft. Hopefully the EU have similar things they can hoodwink them with, should it be needed |
