Back in the days of Soviet Union, the world was safer yes the threat of nuclear war was there but it always will be, what I mean is ... 9/11 wouldn't of happened
... 7/7 wouldn't of happened
... Russia war with Ukraine wouldn't of happened
... COVID 19 maybe but less transition paths for virus. and more
World was more alert then.

I remember being absolutely petrified of nuclear war from the mid late 70's through to the fall of the wall ,so no the world didn't feel safer.
Today reminds me so much of that era with the added threat of Putin and Trump who both seem to be gagging for a global conflict although Trump seems to want to do it via economic sanctions, at the moment. |

Every single assertion above is wrong with the exception of the Ukrainian one.
Terrorist groups existed during the cold War period so 9/11 and 7/7 type attacks were still possible. People and goods still moved between borders so the possibility of virus transfer was still likely. I fail to see the point that the OP is trying to make.

was you really petrified? I remember growing up then aswell, watching when the wind blows, and the public information films about taking your doors off and leaning em up against the wall and covdring them in pillows, was never petrified because always knew if it got to nuclear war majority of us would be dead pretty much instantly so no point in worfying and i was probably 10 or 11 then |

"The Cold War served its purpose, nobody wanted to start a war that would have probably led to the end of humanity itself.
Now we are witnessing horrific yet localised wars. Nations are attacking neighbouring nations, but the type of escalations that caused WW1 are extremely unlikely in this day and age. Weapons of war are so much more dangerous than they were in the first half of the twentieth century.
We no longer have a standing army that would last more than a couple of months if we were invaded by Russia. BUT, we still have a deterrent, enough nukes to destroy Moscow. They can’t take ‘em out, because they don’t know where they are. So don’t expect Putin to send his troops or missiles here."

Yes it was bloody scary I know, we evolved in the nuclear age, it is a weapon of peace. Now a nuclear attack(dirty bomb) from terrorism is more likely than it would be in the cold war, and for those who are anti Russian forget that if it was for them fighting on eastern Hitler would of more likely won the war. And history surely tells you that you can't Russia. I'm not pro this or that, Israel basically destroyed Gaza killed more women and children level there hospital and homes, Iran is working on developing nuclear weapons and I think they have or will, world trade centres. I can point out loads of factors why the cold war era was safer than today's world

I watched threads around 6 year old I sneaked down stairs the next day they were actually blowing up cooling towers near my school the sirens went off I ran out of school back home and when the wind blows makes me cry Raymond Briggs masterpiece |

Okay who out of all the countries in the world have used the bomb? What what what's that you say? Anyway it was different in the first part of the nuclear age. Empires disappear, seeds are sown for today's conflicts, my purpose is probably to remind what it was actually like and this time there is no MAD except for the next leader who is MAD and will use it without thinking of the consequences 2 superpowers are better than 1 the scales are balanced the fear is there, when you have 1 you get a sense of false security like the Romans, and all the other empires that fell because they got to big headed |

yep i was living about 6miles away from a nato command centre so we always knew we would no nothing about it, guess thats why i wasnt overly botherd about it, think id be more terrified of surving the initial blast |

Reflecting on the politics of the early 1980's I think everyone knew where they stood, armed to the heavens, but the politicians seemed more mentally stable, and knew not to push each other too far.
I read a few years ago the Reagan had a recording of "Threads" sent to him and was absolutely petrified by it (fuck me, weren't we all ?), and once more flexible characters arrived in the Kremlin was determined to start talking. What he and Gorbachev achieved in the second half of the decade was amazing.
Both Trump and (in particular) Putin are both sixpence short of a half crown. The sooner the latter dies, the better. |

Alot of people and I mean alot of people were wrongly branded communist and blacklisted during the cold war, Mccarthyism even in this country. It created alot of mistrust and paranoia and mental stress and illness.
If you were in a union you were instantly labelled a commy.
There were dossiers and blacklists.
The funny thing is both side were talking to each other all along at Goverment level. They would use it as a way of smearing people, a bit like the use the phrase far right today. A way of locking or even wiping people out.
I was called a commy because I wore a red shirt at school, I wasn't and I just liked the shirt,that's how crazy things were.
I joined a union in the 80's for a short period and labelled again, experienced bullying.
It made me quite ill at the time ended up on medication and I never trusted anyone after that.
9/11 7/7 have nothing to do with the cold war, more to do with the medievel religious conquests.
Any war is a bad idea. Sadly with today's demographics and no birth control wars are inevitable.
