It was clearly a joke and I found it quite amusing, as did most of the audience there.
But it was bound to be misconstrued, and was bound to generate controversy. His speech was about how Christianity is fading in the UK, and this sort of ill-judged joke isn't going to help that cause.

I have no idea who he is or what the church has done to him. The church is more or less irrelevant in modern life (apart from their perpetual sex scandals) so I wouldn’t imagine that many people are really bothered. |

You mean by their nature of being compassionate and caring about others? Truly a strong case for banning them if that's the case. Who'd want that stuff in their daily lives eh? |

compassionate and caring? What is that when there not fiddling with kids, telling people they will go to hell if they dont let christ into there heart, or when the missionarys would only feed the starving if they became christian, yea very caring and compassionate, dunno about being woke but they are definatley hypocrites |

You can't judge an entire church or religion by a handful of wrongdoers, any more than you can the Police, NHS or Boy Scouts. It's just a convenient label to pin on an organisation by negative misanthropists. |

It seems strange to me that, in a country where the Christian church almost universally supported Trump, they would become offended by an arm gesture from 80 years ago.
They knew before Trump took office he would do what he is currently doing, work hard to destroy US democracy and build a fascist dictatorship. Why not embrace their choice and be honest?
There again, the leader of the Catholic Church supported Hitler in the 1939-1945 "special military operation". |

I trust your comment is irony? Whatever the merits of US philantropy displayed by the aid, The key is influence.
American aid not only ingraciated the USA with other parts of the world but it made them dependant on the USA.
Now that Trump has suddenly withdrawn the Aid those countries received, that has hurt them, the countries are angry, they don't know why he did it for 1% of the Federal budget. They will now look for alternatives.
One that is very keen is China. In the past it also involved Russia. So these pissed off countries, who used to buy stuff from the USA, used to received grain from the usa grown by US farmers, etc. now take the Yuan ¥ as their saviour and the USA loses out.
The most telling point for me is as Trump looks to save Federal money, his first inclination is to stop aid to the poorest and most vulnerable in the world. However, this reflects the views of the MAGA voters.  God bless America. |
