Is it only me or do others find Donald Trump to be a windbag? It's always grabbing on trying to make things sound dramatic or Over the top exciting.

The last house on the left…

At this point, it’s not politics. It’s a cult.

And the U.K is slowly following suit

You win understatement of the week OP.

He's a convicted felon, a r@pist and a danger to democracy.

If he was just another "billionaire" windbag, I wouldn't give a toss.

I was at a conference last year and one of the key note speakers was an advisor during Trump's first term. The exact words she used to describe his administration was a "raging dumpster fire of absolute crazy".

I've never heard anything that sounds so accurate in my life

The strange thing I find is the number of normally sensible people who think of him as intelligent, or that he has leadership qualities, or he can fix things like the economy or international affairs.

I must have been looking at a very different trump for last decade or so.

It's a reflection on not just the people who voted for him, but those trying to suck up to an obvious sociopath, from David lammy, Peter mandelson & Keir starmer to those who want to normalise someone, whose been an apple short of a fruit salad for a long time.

Indeed. Should the investigation find the helicopter pilot at fault, what then?

Obviously, it might not, but if it does? Refusal to accept the truth?

Wouldn't be unusual for him - or his devotees. That's the most dangerous thing about him and them.

An unwillingness to accept facts they don't like and a desire to distort reality accordingly.

I have visited the USA several times and had great conversations with Americans. So many of them, of both Republican and Democrat leanings, are basically good people but what I find is a common thread running between them all.

They all have been affected by the all pervasive propaganda pumped out from cradle to grave that America is the greatest country on Earth. There is a naivety in that belief that tends to dismiss the reality of their situation and cling to religion and demigods like Trump. Trump's is a sociopath, his second term will be a very painful lesson for most of those blind believers.

I think they are refrencing The New World

which the Americas got labelled years ago. As the rest of the big world doesn't participate in those sports, they can't win and be named champions.

The World Cup tends to address this so everyone has a chance to be a champion of a sport.

Whilst on the surface DT looks like an orange fool.

His multitude of executive orders are designed to sow chaos and confusion. That way he can baffle his political opponents and usurp democratic institutions and process in America to create an oligarchy where he has total power.

Tyrants don’t come to power through armed struggle. They use charm, lies, false hopes and promises by tell people who initially vote for them the things that they want to hear.

They fill the positions of state with lackeys who worship every word they say. Dissenting voices are hounded out of office and persecuted…

Can’t really imagine DT accepting being voted out of office in 4 years time…. There are already proposals to change the 14th Amendment of the constitution so that he can serve more than two terms.

I don’t think he will bother trying to make is possible for him to stand again. I think he might be fashioning his son to succeed him as leader of the Republicans. It’s nepotism, and not necessarily a bad thing, definitely not the first time.

Ordinary, intelligent and decent people understand that that the world needs stability, pragmatism and leadership from the United States. Trump has set out on a path to destroy his last term’s big success (NAFTA) and he is attempting regime change in Canada by economic force. This is blatant bullying of the United States most long standing and closest ally and is nothing short of unhinged - Trump had effectively declared war on his closest neighbour because he no longer wants them to be an independent country. Worse it and a signal to the rest of the world that international rules and standards of behaviour no longer apply and the biggest and strongest can do whatever they want. This is not normal behaviour by any standards.

If the markets don’t stop him (which I hope they will as wars of any kind and economic instability is bad for business), I suspect that Greenland will literally be invaded.

None

The American people have wittingly or unwittingly stumbled into what could turn out to be a Dystopian future where democracy is abandoned and power is in hands of a few and the rise of the religious far right. Marginalisation and persecution of groups of citizens who don’t conform to their beliefs.

You think that having an unelected person in the form of Elon Musk and his aides now gaining full access to all federal employee personal data. Shutting down a government independent agency. Taking control of the US Treasury Department’s payment system is not dystopian…

All without any oversight apart from the man who appointed him.

I wonder what you would consider dystopian for the American people.

Alarmist, maybe but it’s less than a full month in to the presidency with these and threats of international trade wars… what else could arise from this autocratic president as he tries to achieve his previous stated goal of having total power.

The next few years could be interesting.

Very easy to scoff and focus on one sensational headline and totally miss the whole picture of creeping authoritarianism and disregard of democratic principles.

I’m sure the federal employees who are also US taxpayers are overwhelmingly overjoyed that Elon Musk has access it all their personal and employment data….

Elon Musk has now been classed as a “Special Government Employee” by the Trump administration…

Sounds similar to Putin’s “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine….

"Well to be fair he's shaking up the World order. If that stops kids dying of Fentanyl overdoses, that's a good thing right?"

But that’s not the true picture. As the majority of Fentanyl is over prescribed by US Doctors.

There is illegal fentanyl smuggling mainly from Mexico and a minor amount less than 1% from Canada of the illegal supply.

However Fentanyl is also smuggled into Canada from America.

Also the chemicals used to make Fentanyl are imported into America legally…

It’s not as straightforward as you suggest.

Least we forget, there are other democratically elected leaders, with overwhelming mandates, who overstepped the mark.

Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Pol Pot (Year zero policy), Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Putin and Recept Tayyip Erdogan. Overwhelming mandates do not justify illegal actions and inhuman treatment of those perceived to have opposed the despot.

He should take some lessons from Starmer perhaps.

Our own Glorious Leader never fails in making everything sound very dull and uninteresting, and bringing down a pall of gloom and doom on proceedings.

It will be interesting to see how US and UK economic performance compare over the next four years and whether US or UK citizens are better or worse off. That of course is the real test of Trump’s (and Starmer’s) government. And what Trump and Starmer will be judged on.

Managing the second wave of the COVID crisis. - handling of the crisis and the advice given to the public was in stark contrast to the chaos of the Trump administration. Implementing a vaccine rollout that was effective, rectifying previous supply problems with sourcing vaccines.

Supporting Ukraine - Continued and unwavering support for Ukraine has been met with fierce opposition from Maga Republicans in Congress ever since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.

Affordable healthcare - Managed to double the number of Americans who have access to affordable healthcare.

Economic improvements - The economy created 2.23 million jobs in the final year of Biden’s term. The administration’s economic performance exceeded many forecasters’ expectations, especially in job creation. Biden was the first president under whom jobs were created during every month they were in office.

He failed to bring down inflation which made him an easy target for Trump to criticise during the 2024 election.

On tackling immigration attempts to push through a number of bills such as the US Citizenship Act 2021 were, for various reasons, Republicans have blocked.

Afghanistan withdrawal was chaos but it had been previously set in motion by the prior Trump administration.

How do you reduce demand when cheap drugs are flooding across your borders? Tell kids 'it's a bit naughty'? Put them in jail (they're full)? The most important action is to stop the supply, the rest will follow. Kudos to Trump for having the balls to do something.
