Oy! Can't let human rights get in the way of Rachel from accounts! But we've been on trade deals with the likes of Saudis, Oman etc so who cares |

"Always wondered,if connected to the grid, just how much of the power produced, from a home installation, actually gets to be used"
An awful lot of it, esp if you have battery and load shift when you can as well. My house system generated around 5000kw last year to use, recharge or sell to grid. |

Whoa, you're not supposed to come up with anything positive in this forum. |

A number of years ago "they" decided that new builds certain social housing projects should be made sustainable using wooden windows and doors instead of uPVC.
A few years after building them they realised that actually a virtually maintenance free ( requires lubrication and occasional adjustments) uPVC windows and doors are actually more environmentally friendly due to the longevity and can be made from recycled materials and doesn't impact deforestation as much.
Honestly these overpaid morons couldn't come up with a decent new idea if it came up and smacked them in the face.
One of the estates I used to maintain where built with solar heating and hot water about 4 years after being built they disconnected the solar system due to it being so unreliable and expensive to maintain.
I fully expect these air source and ground source heat pumps to become expensive and problematic as time goes on. |

As we get poorer, colder, have less reliable energy security and possibly reduce our carbon emissions by 0.5%, China will get richer, have much more reliable energy security and their carbon emissions will continue to increase…
Britains net zero race is just shifting the reported problem from one place to another.
We produce approx 1% of global emissions. Red Ed and is maniac policies will not benefit us, they will just benefit the likes of China.
He was utterly useless as a Labour Leader, he is utterly useless to n his current role. |

OK I'm no Greenie but we have solar panels and solar hot water.
But we are in Spain in an area that gets around 320 sunny days per year.
We use quite a lot of electricity (pool pump, Jacuzzi heater and 2 fridge freezers on top of the normal stuff) so when we installed them it was purely for financial reasons and I have to say it has turned out well.
The solar hot water provides 100% of our use from March to October and day to day warm water in the winter, but we have to turn on the gas for winter showers.
Before we installed it our electric bills were around 150€ pm in summer and a bit over 200€ pm in the winter.
Now our summer bills are 20/30€ and winter 60/70€. We think that is pretty good for our usage.
We didn't and still don't use that much gas (just winter hot water) but it has cut the bills by over 50%.
How you would fare in the UK when some places barely get 5 hours of daylight in winter and the sun is so low in the sky (if you see it at all) it generates very little is open to debate. Southern England should do ok in the summer though. |

Using solar power generate electricity is a key way for us to become more energy independent and it can reduce bills. The UK has historically been a contributor to global heating and so we have historical and current damage to redress.
We also globally need to mitigate the level of global heating harm. The only limits to harm are what humans create |

But it isn't a "key way" for a country like the UK to become energy independent.
In the summer months it can make a small contribution, in the winter it will create next to nothing.
It's just a huge expense to save a miniscule amount of another miniscule amount.
I'm not against solar per se. I even have it myself but like everything else there is a place for it and a place not for it.
In sub tropical climates there is a good case but in cold, usually cloudy, wet and dark in the winter UK. It's nonsense.
If it's independence you want then best get fracking. |

I have solar panels fitted years ago when feed in tariff payments were decent. Cost 7k install. Energy bills reduced and 50% of units produced paid back covered the costs and paying the install costs. Now install costs have been recovered last 5 years I'm covering energy costs and making circa £1500 per annum. More if we get a good summer. Happy days! |

by the OP's own admission, 60% of solar panels are not made by forced labour or in china.
conversely there's as large a percentage (if not more) of phones, tv sets, general tech (which over a 25 year period will find their way into landfill 4 times) along with fabric products such as off the peg fashion and general plastic tat which is made in china & by forced labour/child exploitation.
yet the usual righty climate denying wierdos focus on solar panels rather than the everyday crap that this sort of wierdo righty consumer gorges on. |

Nice try but the thread is about, yep you guessed it, solar panels. I suppose in some parallel universe it may be seen as weird to post about solar panels on a thread about solar panels.
We could always start another thread about cheap Chinese tat and all the other shit that comes out of coal fired China.
You know, all that stuff we used to make until the unhinged green lefty's figured out that they could still have all their toys and polish their halo's at the same time.
Now that really is weird. |

Maybe not by exact definition but you are close enough and well old enough to be a grandad, maybe you are.
You seem to think that I'm insulted by the term. I actually quite like it. I've got 2 lovely grandkids.
But as in your previous incarnation(s) on here, when you run out of ideas you resort to childish perceived insults.
Just shows you up as a bitter twisted lefty without an original thought in your head.
Carry on, here I'll save you some typing, just copy and paste.
Grandad, grandad, GRANDAD. Pick any one of the 3 versions depending on where in the sentence you want to put it.
The shouty one is for when you really chuck your toys out of the pram.
Meanwhile the real world beckons, pool cleaning duty next.

Solar power can be used in many ways and there are obviously ways to avoid the use of materials that have inappropriate origins. It's going to be a minority source of power for the majority of the population here, especially as alternative production and options are developed further. We need to be closing the Carbon emissions energy sources, as fully and as quickly as possible. Obviously lifetime Carbon costs are evaluated, as part of evaluating options |

Or cheap (dirty) energy.
One country taxes energy to save the world while another produces cheap energy to boost production.
Energy tax = job tax.

"As we get poorer, colder, have less reliable energy security and possibly reduce our carbon emissions by 0.5%, China will get richer, have much more reliable energy security and their carbon emissions will continue to increase…
Britains net zero race is just shifting the reported problem from one place to another.
We produce approx 1% of global emissions. Red Ed and is maniac policies will not benefit us, they will just benefit the likes of China.
He was utterly useless as a Labour Leader, he is utterly useless to n his current role.
We don't produce or manufacture
much these days.... China makes all our shit for us... Therefore we have low emissions because China pollutes for us.
Which is what I've been saying for years.
If a millionaire keeps his money in an offshore account the left are jumping up and down with outrage.
If a country sends its pollution (and jobs) abroad they polish their halo and tell everyone they've saved the world.
Is it a country that sends the jobs or the private sector increasing their profits with cheap labour?
Or cheap (dirty) energy.
One country taxes energy to save the world while another produces cheap energy to boost production.
Energy tax = job tax.
The law of unintended consequences.

I didn't say "all" about energy but, whether or not it suits you anti business mantra, it still makes up a sizeable chunk and there is a lot more involved than just clothing.
Electric cars for the halo polishers would be just one example and not forgetting solar panels. |

"Toxic chemicals in solar panels so they can't be recycled and just go to landfill "
I might be wrong but solar panels CAN be recycled. I don't think it happens on a large scale but that might change in the future.

Solar panels are mostly silicon, with a glass coating. They usually have an aluminium frame, and small amounts of copper and silver to conduct the electrical charges. There's nothing toxic there, and the components are easy to reclaim (though not recycle as high-purity silicon is needed for new panels). |
